You can stream a live IP-camera feed from a compatible Synology NAS to YouTube without a separate PC by using Surveillance Station’s Live Broadcast feature. That documented workflow uses your own YouTube RTMP server URL and stream key and requires H.264 video. It is not a documented built-in way to loop prerecorded files stored on the NAS. First, identify what you want to stream
The right method depends on whether the source is a camera or a video file. Synology describes Live Broadcast as sending IP camera streams from Surveillance Station to YouTube Live. Its documentation does not establish that Surveillance Station can play and continuously loop stored MP4s or other prerecorded files.

Synology’s integration page describes the camera feature as streaming IP cameras directly from Surveillance Station to YouTube Live: Synology’s YouTube integration. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos and describes the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder that can schedule prerecorded media without a computer: YouTube’s encoder guide.
Set up the documented Synology camera workflow
Before starting, confirm that your NAS supports the required Surveillance Station package and check camera compatibility for the exact model. Synology links to IP camera compatibility resources from its integration page; package availability and compatibility can vary by model and software release.

- Prepare YouTube Live. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. YouTube’s encoder setup uses those values to tell the encoder where to send the broadcast: YouTube’s encoder guide.
- Open Live Broadcast in Surveillance Station. In Surveillance Station’s Application Center, enable and open Live Broadcast, then switch its service on. The exact interface can vary with the installed package version; follow the labels in your version of Surveillance Station.
- Enter the YouTube destination. In Live Broadcast’s YouTube settings, enter the RTMP path or server URL and your stream key. Do not copy a sample key from a manual or web page. A stream key grants access to your broadcast destination, so keep it private and replace it if exposed.
- Select the source and profile. Choose the camera and a stream profile. Synology’s cited instructions specify H.264 video for this YouTube workflow. Make sure the selected profile matches the camera’s available output and produces a stable feed.
- Start and verify the broadcast. Save the settings and start the broadcast. Check the incoming preview and stream health in YouTube’s Live Control Room before considering the setup operational. YouTube’s scheduled-stream guidance instructs creators to wait for the preview and then click Go live when that step applies to their stream configuration.
Stream keys, RTMPS, and YouTube constraints
Protect the stream key
The server URL and stream key are the destination and credentials your encoder needs. Use the values from your own Live Control Room, not an example, and do not publish the key in a screenshot or configuration shared publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
Check whether live streaming is enabled
YouTube says first-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours. If Live Control Room does not let you start a stream, check whether activation is still pending before troubleshooting the NAS.

Do not assume RTMPS support on the NAS
YouTube supports RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and says to use the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room with an encoder that supports it: YouTube’s RTMPS instructions. Synology’s cited Live Broadcast instructions describe RTMP fields but do not confirm RTMPS support. Verify the behavior for your installed Surveillance Station version instead of assuming that changing the URL is sufficient.
Be careful with long archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a longer uninterrupted broadcast will be saved as one complete archive, so do not rely on the automatic archive behavior for streams that exceed that duration.

If you want to loop prerecorded videos from the NAS
The official Synology workflow above takes a camera feed as its source. It does not establish a supported NAS feature for selecting stored videos, building a playlist, and looping it to YouTube. YouTube requires a sending encoder configured with a server URL and stream key, so a file loop needs an encoder in addition to the media files.
DIY on the NAS
A NAS-local software encoder or container may be a possible DIY project, but treat it as an unsupported configuration unless Synology documents the exact method for your model and software. Before relying on it, verify NAS CPU and memory headroom, processor architecture, container compatibility, media codecs, network stability, restart behavior after a failure, and whether the chosen encoder supports the required transport. The cited official documentation does not validate a specific Synology FFmpeg command, container image, or auto-recovery procedure.

Use a separate encoder instead
YouTube’s encoder guide recognizes cloud 24/7 services and standalone hardware encoders as alternatives for prerecorded-video streams. These avoid requiring a dedicated PC to do the encoding locally, but they are separate from Synology’s camera integration. Compare current service features, content handling, stream controls, program availability, and costs before choosing.

Troubleshooting the Synology camera stream

Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before broadcasting either a camera feed or prerecorded material, confirm that you have the rights to the audio and video you send to YouTube. A stream key only authorizes the encoder to connect; it does not grant permission to use someone else’s content. For a prerecorded playlist, review the rights and permissions for every item, including background music and any footage you did not create.
