You can run a prerecorded podcast-style YouTube Live stream from a headless Ubuntu Server with FFmpeg, a YouTube stream key, and a systemd service. FFmpeg sends the media; systemd can restart the encoder after certain failures. Neither guarantees that YouTube is receiving healthy video and audio, so plan to monitor the stream and renew broadcasts as needed.

What you need before you start

  • An Ubuntu Server that can stay powered on and maintain a reliable upload connection. It may be a machine at home or a VPS; compare sustained outbound bandwidth, monthly transfer allowance, CPU if transcoding, storage, reboot behavior, access, and total cost.
  • Podcast video and audio that you have the rights to broadcast. A YouTube Live stream does not grant permission to reuse music, footage, or other material.
  • FFmpeg built with the encoders and protocols your workflow requires. Check the installed build and its own manual; Ubuntu’s cited FFmpeg manpage is for the Bionic documentation set and may not match your release.
  • YouTube Live access, a stream URL, and a private stream key. First-time live streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours.

A VPS is one possible host, not a requirement. An example Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd setup is described by iTechGuides, but that tutorial does not establish current pricing, plan capacity, terms, or suitability for your stream.

Enable YouTube Live and create the stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live. If prompted, enable live streaming and allow for the first-time activation delay, which YouTube says can be up to 24 hours.
  2. In Live Control Room, create or select the broadcast and its stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
  3. Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the associated stream. Do not put it in public scripts, logs, or support posts.
  4. Use the RTMPS endpoint supplied for the stream where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for the standard RTMP-based workflow; it uses SSL and port 443. Do not replace the supplied endpoint with a guessed generic URL.

See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions for the current Studio flow. For RTMPS connection details, see Google’s RTMPS guide.

Choose the video and audio settings

Use a resolution and frame rate that fit the source and your sustained upload capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Its H.264 video bitrate recommendations include:

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output YouTube-recommended video bitrate
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube recommendations, not guaranteed minimums or measurements of your server. Leave headroom for network variation and test with representative movement and audio. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple viewer formats; use its stream-health indicators to check what it is receiving. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance.

For a conventional podcast stream, RTMPS is usually the simpler choice. YouTube also supports HLS for HDR or codecs not supported through RTMP, but HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. Its setup requires TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT. Use it only if your format or codec requirements call for it; details are in YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

Prepare Ubuntu and run FFmpeg

Install and verify FFmpeg

Install FFmpeg using the package source appropriate for your Ubuntu release, then inspect the installed build and its available encoders and protocols. Exact package versions and capabilities vary by release and source. Consult the manual installed on your server; the Ubuntu Bionic FFmpeg manpage documents real-time input with -re and RTMP publishing, but it is an older manual.

Test a file before making the service persistent

For a file-based broadcast, the basic FFmpeg pattern is to read the media at real-time speed, encode compatible audio and video, then publish an FLV output to YouTube’s RTMP-compatible ingest. FFmpeg options apply to the next input or output, so place input options before that input’s -i. A command’s exact codec and bitrate options depend on your file, installed FFmpeg build, and chosen output settings; verify them against the local manual rather than copying an unverified command.

Start with a short test broadcast. Confirm that YouTube’s Live Control Room preview appears, the health status is acceptable, and both picture and sound are correct before relying on an unattended run. A process that remains open is not proof that frames or audible audio are reaching viewers.

Loop or schedule the media deliberately

Choose whether the program is a continuous loop or a planned playlist. Test transitions and the behavior at the end of each file: a missing, unreadable, or incompatible source can stop the encoder or leave unintended output. Give the service account read access to every media file and verify the sequence before enabling automatic restarts.

Run the encoder under systemd

  1. Create a dedicated unprivileged Linux account for the encoder and grant it only the access it needs to read media and run FFmpeg.
  2. Store the stream key in a restricted environment file or another secret store readable only by the encoder account. Avoid embedding the key in a world-readable unit file or a script that may be shared.
  3. Create a systemd service that starts the tested FFmpeg command, runs it as the dedicated account, and sends output to journald. Keep the unit straightforward and add a restart policy such as Restart=on-failure with a delay to avoid rapid restart loops.
  4. Start the service and inspect its state and logs with systemd tools such as systemctl status and journalctl -u. Then check YouTube Live Control Room rather than treating a running service as the final health check.

systemd documents when a service configured with Restart=on-failure is restarted in its service manual. That behavior supervises process exits; it does not detect every case where a process is alive but the stream is stalled.

Plan for broadcast length and archiving

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archive rule, not a promise that a single broadcast can remain active indefinitely, nor a guarantee of continuous recording for a 24/7 channel. Decide how you will rotate or recreate broadcasts and how you will preserve recordings beyond YouTube’s stated automatic-archive behavior. Include a person or procedure to verify each handoff in Live Control Room.

Monitor it and troubleshoot failures

Check the encoder logs, CPU and memory use, network throughput, YouTube stream health, and whether the expected audio is audible. Make checks part of the operating routine, especially after a server reboot, network change, source update, or broadcast rotation.

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
No preview or YouTube will not accept the feed Wrong stream URL or key, live access not yet enabled, or an ingest connection problem Verify the selected stream’s URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm activation is complete, and use the supplied RTMPS endpoint. Keep the key private.
Stream health is poor or viewers see interruptions Upload capacity is insufficient or unstable for the selected bitrate Check sustained outbound bandwidth and encoder logs; reduce the output bitrate or resolution to a level the connection can sustain, then test again.
Service repeatedly exits FFmpeg error, inaccessible media, unsupported codec, or a bad configuration Read the unit’s journal logs, test the command interactively with the same account, and confirm paths and build capabilities. Avoid a tight restart loop while diagnosing.
Service is running but picture or audio has stopped The process may be alive while media input or publishing has stalled Check FFmpeg logs and YouTube’s stream-health status, confirm the source is advancing, and verify audible audio in the preview.
Broadcast ends or recording expectations are not met Broadcast lifecycle and automatic archiving are separate from the encoder’s looping behavior Review the broadcast schedule and handoff procedure; arrange renewal and separate recording preservation where needed.

FFmpeg or OBS for a prerecorded podcast?

FFmpeg is suited to headless, file-based playback when the program can be encoded and sent without a graphical production session. OBS is an alternative when you need a graphical workflow, scene switching, or live inputs. A desktop interface is not inherently required for an automated prerecorded loop. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS; see its HLS encoder information.

Choose based on production needs and operations: headless automation and configuration complexity for FFmpeg; scenes, live inputs, and graphical control for OBS. Either way, monitor the resulting YouTube stream rather than assuming the encoder alone provides end-to-end reliability.
