Nathan Fillion publicly thanked Stana Katic for creating Kate Beckett, wished her success and said she would be missed. That is what his statement establishes; it cannot reveal his private feelings beyond the words he chose to share.
What Nathan Fillion said about Stana Katic’s departure
On April 19, 2016, TVLine reported Fillion’s response to Katic’s announced departure from Castle. He wrote: “Stana has been my partner all this time, and I thank her for creating the character of Beckett. I wish her well, and have no doubt she will succeed in everything she pursues. She will be missed.” TVLine’s report attributes the message to a post he shared on Twitter.
His public words were appreciative and supportive: he recognized Katic’s contribution to the series, wished her well and acknowledged that her absence would be felt. The statement is the clearest evidence of what he expressed publicly, not proof of any unspoken feelings.
When Katic left—and what happened to Castle
ABC announced on April 18, 2016, that Katic would not return after the show’s eighth season. The network’s statement praised her talent and dedication, but did not explain why she was leaving. The same announcement also concerned Tamala Jones, who played Lanie Parish. CBS News reported the announcement.

At the time, a ninth season was under consideration. CBS News, citing information attributed to Deadline sources, reported that the network and studio had decided Katic and Jones would not return if a shortened ninth season went forward, reportedly for budgetary reasons. That explanation came from attributed media reporting; it was not the reason given in ABC’s public statement.
ABC ultimately did not make a ninth season. On May 12, 2016, TheWrap reported that the network had cancelled Castle after eight seasons. TheWrap’s report places the cancellation after the news of Katic’s departure.

What Fillion’s statement does—and does not—tell us
Fillion’s message does not say that he caused Katic’s exit, explain the network’s decision or confirm rumors about conflict behind the scenes. The available public record supports a narrower conclusion: he thanked his co-star and expressed good wishes after her departure was announced. It does not establish his private motives or feelings beyond that statement.
