You can run a YouTube radio stream from a Mac mini with OBS Studio: create a YouTube Live event, send OBS’s audio-and-visual scene to it using the stream URL and key, and monitor the broadcast from YouTube Live Control Room. For a continuous station, plan for audio routing, music rights, reconnects, and YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit before leaving the stream unattended.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel that is verified, with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips and encoder setup guide explain eligibility and activation.
  • A Mac mini running macOS 13 or newer for the current OBS Studio release. The download page offers separate Intel and Apple Silicon installers; select the one that matches your Mac. OBS Studio download.
  • A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your selected video bitrate. The right resolution and bitrate depend on the connection and production, so test rather than assuming every Mac mini or internet plan can sustain the same settings. YouTube’s encoder settings.
  • Audio you have the right to broadcast live and, if you intend to leave replays available, archive. Rights need to cover your intended use, territory, and any attribution or other license conditions.

OBS is free streaming software. A hardware encoder is not required for this basic workflow. OBS’s system requirements list Intel and Apple Silicon processors, but compatibility alone does not guarantee that a particular Mac can handle every encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene combination. OBS system requirements.

Set up the YouTube livestream

  1. Enable live streaming early. In YouTube Studio, follow the live-streaming activation prompts for your channel. If this is your first stream, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create an encoder stream. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder option. Scheduling gives you a watch page in advance; use the planned title, description, and visibility settings for the event.
  3. Copy the connection details. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. The URL is the destination for the encoder; the key identifies your stream. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or on-air visuals. YouTube’s encoder instructions walk through creating an event and connecting an encoder.

Install and connect OBS on the Mac mini

  1. Choose the right installer. On the OBS download page, choose macOS and the installer for the Mac mini’s processor: Intel or Apple Silicon. The current download supports macOS 13 and newer; older OBS releases may have different operating-system requirements.
  2. Install the application. Open the downloaded disk image and move OBS into Applications, as described in the OBS Mac installation guide. Open OBS and run its Auto-Configuration Wizard, then test the actual scene rather than treating its suggested settings as a guarantee.
  3. Enter YouTube’s connection details. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key. If you use a custom server option, use the stream URL supplied by YouTube. Keep the key private.
  4. Build a simple radio scene. Add a still image, title card, or visualizer as a visual source, then add the audio source for your program. Watch the OBS audio mixer while audio plays: its meters should move. If your audio comes from another Mac application, the way to route that system audio depends on the app and macOS setup; verify the chosen routing method on this Mac rather than assuming one universal driver or configuration.
  5. Check the YouTube preview before going live. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the encoder feed to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture, sound, and stream health there before starting the public broadcast.

Choose settings that suit a radio stream

A radio broadcast often needs less visual detail than a fast-moving video, but the appropriate settings still depend on the scene, connection, and encoder capability. Begin with a modest resolution and frame rate appropriate for a still image or simple visualizer, then test the complete setup. Use YouTube’s current encoder settings recommendations to select a supported combination.

Setting Practical guidance
Transport Use RTMPS, which YouTube recommends for encrypted transport. HLS is a specialized alternative for particular codec or HDR workflows and has higher latency; it usually adds needless complexity to a basic radio scene.
Video codec YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP(S). Use a codec supported by the selected OBS encoder and YouTube workflow.
Rate control Use CBR, the constant-bitrate mode YouTube recommends for live encoding.
Keyframe interval Set 2 seconds, YouTube’s recommendation; do not exceed 4 seconds.
Frame rate YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps. For a still image or simple visualizer, choose a rate your Mac and connection can sustain; a higher rate is not automatically useful.
Audio YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP(S) and recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio. Confirm the OBS output is stereo if that matches your program.

Measure upload speed and leave headroom rather than setting the video bitrate at the full measured upload rate. YouTube specifically recommends testing upload bitrate. Run a trial with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, check Live Control Room’s preview and stream health, and confirm the local recording is growing before relying on the setup.

Keep a long-running radio stream dependable

Monitor the broadcast

During a test and any attended launch, check the OBS audio meters, the Live Control Room preview, stream health, and whether the local recording is being written. For unattended operation, arrange periodic checks of sound, image, network status, and encoder output. Verify that the event appears as intended on the channel or watch page and on a mobile device.

Plan for internet and power interruptions

A dropped connection can interrupt an encoder feed. Have a way to check OBS and Live Control Room, and test how the stream behaves after a brief interruption before treating it as unattended. Ethernet may be a useful option for a stationary setup, but it is not a guaranteed fix for upload problems or a universal requirement. Check the exact Mac mini and network equipment for port or adapter needs, then test the actual upload path.

Design around YouTube’s archive limit

YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a 24/7 station, do not assume one uninterrupted stream will produce a complete YouTube archive. Plan session rotations under the 12-hour threshold, consider how breaks and new watch pages will affect listeners, and keep an independent local recording backup. Test the rotation and archive behavior before depending on it. YouTube’s archive guidance.

Make sure the music is cleared for live use

Music rights are a core part of a radio stream, not a setting you can fix in OBS. Confirm that each track’s rights cover a YouTube livestream and any replay you intend to retain. Check territory, attribution requirements, and whether continuous or radio-style use is permitted; keep license records. YouTube warns that a livestream can be terminated after a copyright strike, and an archived completed stream can receive a Content ID claim. See YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.

YouTube Creator Music is documented as available to creators in the U.S. YouTube Partner Program, with expansion to non-U.S. YPP creators pending. Its licensing is track-specific, so the feature is not a blanket license for a continuous radio station; inspect the terms for each track. YouTube’s Creator Music licensing instructions.

Troubleshoot common setup problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
Live streaming is unavailable The channel has not completed verification or activation, or has a live-stream restriction. Check channel eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. Enable the feature early; first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
YouTube does not receive the OBS feed The stream key or URL is wrong, the event is not configured for the encoder, or OBS is not sending. Confirm the correct event is open in Live Control Room, re-enter its current connection details in OBS, start the OBS stream, and wait for the preview.
The preview has no sound The selected audio source is not reaching OBS, or its output is muted or routed elsewhere. Play the program and watch the OBS mixer meters. Check the source’s device or routing and mute state; validate system-audio routing for the specific playback app and Mac configuration.
Video or audio stutters, or stream health degrades The upload path cannot sustain the chosen bitrate, or the Mac’s encoder/scene load is too demanding. Check YouTube’s stream health, test sustained upload, and lower bitrate, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity. Retest the full program before returning to unattended operation.
The archive is missing or incomplete The stream exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive boundary, or the local recording was not enabled or saved. Keep sessions below 12 hours if you need YouTube’s automatic archive, and verify a separate local recording is being created and stored.
A copyright action affects the livestream or replay A track may not be cleared for live broadcast or archiving, or its license conditions were not met. Review the track’s exact license and YouTube’s notice. Replace or remove material that is not authorized; do not assume a track’s availability in a music library grants continuous-radio rights.
