The server sends that encoded feed directly to YouTube Live over RTMP or RTMPS; Icecast is optional, and only needed if you also want a conventional internet-radio endpoint.
How the setup works
Liquidsoap selects and schedules audio files or playlists. Its YouTube output uses FFmpeg encoding to combine the audio with a video signal and send a live audiovisual feed to YouTube. systemd starts the Liquidsoap process at boot and can restart it if the process exits. YouTube viewers watch the live stream on YouTube.
YouTube’s encoder workflow is distinct from an Icecast radio endpoint. YouTube receives an encoded live feed; Icecast serves audio to listeners through a station stream URL. Liquidsoap can output to either destination, but an Icecast server is not a prerequisite for YouTube Live.
| Option | Listener destination | Server role | Use it when |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube Live encoder output | A YouTube watch page | Liquidsoap sends an encoded live feed to YouTube using RTMP or RTMPS. | You want the station to be a YouTube live stream. |
| Icecast endpoint | A radio player or directory using your station’s stream URL | Icecast serves source audio to listeners; Liquidsoap can provide the audio source. | You also want a conventional internet-radio stream. |
Icecast describes its software as something that “can be used to create an Internet radio station or a privately running jukebox and many things in between.” That describes a separate distribution role, not a step required to reach YouTube.

What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder workflow. Allow for that before a planned launch.
- A Linux host that can run continuously. It can be an existing machine or a Linux VPS. Make sure its sustained upload capacity can carry your selected video and audio bitrates with headroom, and that you can administer its services and logs.
- Liquidsoap with the needed FFmpeg support. The exact install method and available output syntax depend on the distribution and Liquidsoap build. Verify commands and configuration against the version installed on your host.
- Audio files and a programming plan. Prepare the files or folders Liquidsoap will play, and decide whether it should rotate tracks, use a playlist, or follow a schedule.
- A visual for the video feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow is audiovisual. Choose an appropriate fixed or gently changing visual and configure it as part of the encoder output; the cited setup guidance does not prescribe a specific image or animation.
- Permission to broadcast every element. Clear the relevant rights for the audio and visual material for your intended use and territories. Requirements depend on the particular works, rights holders, and places involved; there is no universal clearance formula for every catalog.
Set up YouTube Live and protect the stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or schedule the live stream in Live Control Room. Select the stream’s ingest URL and stream key.
- Configure Liquidsoap’s YouTube output with the ingest destination and key. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.”
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it in a script repository, paste it into public troubleshooting posts, or expose it in logs. Limit access to the configuration and service account that need it.
- If the key is exposed, reset it through Live Control Room, then update the encoder configuration and restart the service with the replacement key.
The key tells YouTube where the encoder feed belongs and allows YouTube to accept it. Never put a real key in a sample command or public configuration example.
Choose YouTube encoder settings
YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS for encoder ingest and recommends RTMPS, the encrypted option. Its published video codec options for these protocols are H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the audio recommendations include AAC or MP3. In practice, select settings supported by your installed Liquidsoap/FFmpeg build and confirm the resulting stream health in YouTube Live Control Room.

| Setting | YouTube guidance | Practical note |
|---|---|---|
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS. | Use the ingest URL supplied for the stream and the protocol supported by your output configuration. |
| Video codec | H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1. | For the bitrate examples below, YouTube specifies H.264. |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS. | Check that your Liquidsoap output and FFmpeg build support the chosen codec. |
| Rate control | Constant bitrate (CBR). | Set the encoder for CBR where applicable rather than letting the bitrate vary unpredictably. |
| Keyframe interval | Recommended: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds. | Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly. |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps stereo audio bitrate in YouTube’s advanced recommendations. | Use these values as guidance for a stereo feed, subject to the current official settings and your content needs. |
YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, gives these H.264 bitrate examples:
| Output example | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular server or network can sustain the selected rate. Choose the row for your actual resolution and frame rate, leave upload headroom for fluctuations, and consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings for other output sizes and any changed guidance.

Configure Liquidsoap to send the stream
Liquidsoap documents a YouTube RTMP output, output.youtube.live.rtmp, with an FFmpeg H.264/AAC example. Output syntax and supported options can change between versions, so use the documentation for your installed release and confirm its functions and encoder options before deploying. The following is a configuration outline, not a complete drop-in script: define a source from your own audio files or playlist, configure the video component and encoding, then direct the output to the YouTube ingest URL with your private stream key.
- Create the Liquidsoap source using the files and schedule you intend to broadcast. Confirm it can find and decode all representative files.
- Configure the output with the YouTube RTMP destination and stream key, and set the selected video and audio encoding parameters. Keep the output in the foreground process managed by systemd.
- Validate the configuration using the check command documented for your installed version. Liquidsoap’s production guidance shows
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq; adjust the path to your configuration. - Run a short test and check both the audio/video feed and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before treating the service as ready.
Run Liquidsoap under systemd
Liquidsoap’s production guide says: “In production, run liquidsoap in the foreground under a service manager, such as systemd on Linux or launchd on macOS.” Keep the process in the foreground so systemd can supervise it; do not daemonize Liquidsoap inside the service.

Here is the minimal unit pattern from the Liquidsoap production guidance. The executable path, configuration path, and service-account setup may differ on your installation.
[Unit]
Description=My radio
After=network-online.target
Wants=network-online.target
[Service]
User=liquidsoap
Group=liquidsoap
ExecStart=/usr/bin/liquidsoap /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq
Restart=always
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
- Save the unit as
/etc/systemd/system/radio.service, changing the paths and account to match your server. - Ensure the
liquidsoapuser and group exist and can read the audio, configuration, and any visual assets the process needs. Restrict configuration access because it may contain the stream key. - Check the Liquidsoap configuration before starting or restarting the service:
liquidsoap --check /etc/liquidsoap/radio.liq. - Enable and start the service with
sudo systemctl enable --now radio. - Check its state with
systemctl status radioand view recent output withjournalctl -u radio. systemd records standard output in the journal by default.
Restart=always asks systemd to restart a process that exits; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube broadcast. Network, platform, key, content, or encoder problems can still require investigation or operator attention.

Test the stream and keep it healthy
- Test representative material. Include the kinds of audio and motion the station will actually send; check for silence, clipping, missing video, and unexpected gaps.
- Measure available upload capacity. Compare sustained upload performance with the full output bitrate and retain headroom. A brief speed-test peak is not proof that the server can sustain the stream indefinitely.
- Watch YouTube stream health. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports no encoding or connection issue before relying on the live page.
- Inspect the service journal after an interruption. Use
journalctl -u radioto identify Liquidsoap startup, source, or output errors. Correct the underlying issue before repeatedly restarting a failing configuration. - Plan for archive behavior. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. For a longer continuous broadcast, plan around that limit rather than assuming one unbroken session will be archived in the same way.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Wrong ingest URL or key, live streaming not enabled, or output configuration error. | Check Live Control Room, verify the configured destination and key privately, and inspect journalctl -u radio. |
| The service exits immediately | Invalid Liquidsoap syntax, unavailable plugin/codec, wrong executable or configuration path, or file access failure. | Run the version-appropriate configuration check, confirm installed FFmpeg support, inspect the journal, and verify service-account permissions. |
| Audio or video stutters | Insufficient or fluctuating upload capacity, excessive bitrate for the host, or an encoding/source issue. | Review YouTube stream health, test sustained upload capacity, leave headroom, and test with representative source files. |
| A key previously worked but no longer does | The stream key may have been reset or exposed. | Check Live Control Room, reset the key if compromised, update the protected configuration, then restart the service. |
| systemd does not bring the stream back | The process may remain running while its network or YouTube output is unhealthy, or a fault may require more than a process restart. | Check the journal and YouTube stream health; fix the cause rather than treating the restart policy as an external health monitor. |
