Each points to a different problem. A black OBS preview usually calls for checking the selected scene, source visibility, capture method, target application, or game compatibility; a correct OBS preview with a black YouTube output calls for checking the outgoing feed and YouTube dashboard. A YouTube rights warning is a separate issue, not an OBS capture setting.
Locate where the picture turns black
Use the same scene and VOD playback for each check. Make a short local recording, and compare it with the OBS preview and the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. YouTube recommends checking that preview before starting the stream and monitoring audio and video during the broadcast (YouTube live streaming tips – Computer).
- OBS preview is black: Start with the active scene, source visibility and order, the capture source, and whether it targets the correct game or player.
- OBS preview looks right, but a local recording is black: Repeat a short recording and watch for the source disappearing or changing during playback. A fullscreen game may stop rendering when you switch away from it.
- OBS preview and recording look right, but YouTube is black: Inspect the outgoing feed and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. Encoder streaming sends an encoded feed to YouTube; a correct OBS canvas alone does not confirm that YouTube is receiving a healthy picture (Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).
- OBS shows the VOD, but YouTube shows a placeholder or interruption: Check YouTube Studio for a warning or rights issue before changing capture settings.
Fix a black game source in OBS
Change one factor at a time where practical, then check the preview again. OBS’s Game Capture Troubleshooting guide, dated January 12, 2022, lists setup, conflicts, fullscreen behavior, game-specific compatibility, and GPU assignment among the areas to check.
- Confirm the scene and source. Select the scene used for the rerun, make sure the intended source is visible and not covered by another source, and verify that Game Capture targets the correct game or process.
- Check for capture conflicts. Close overlays and FPS counters temporarily, then test again. OBS identifies RTSS/MSI Afterburner as possible conflicts; its guide also describes a compatibility setting for newer RTSS versions.
- Try a different display mode or capture method. For some games, test windowed or borderless fullscreen. If Game Capture cannot hook a particular game, OBS lists Window Capture as an alternative. Compatibility varies by title, so use any game-specific note in OBS’s guide rather than assuming one setting works everywhere.
- Check GPU assignment on laptops and multi-GPU systems. Verify that OBS and the game are assigned appropriately; OBS links to GPU-selection guidance and a Minecraft-specific guide in its troubleshooting article.
- Use administrator mode only when indicated. OBS lists elevation as a workaround for select games, not a universal fix. Try it only when the game or OBS guidance points to that requirement.
- Test without minimizing a fullscreen game. OBS explains: “If a game is set to run in full-screen mode, when you alt+tab out the game, it will stop rendering.” It adds: “This means that you will not see the game in OBS while it is minimized.” Keep the game visible during the test, use another monitor, or make a test recording.
If the VOD is playing in a browser or media player
A VOD in a browser or media player is an application window; it is not necessarily a game process that Game Capture can hook. Check which OBS source is meant to capture that player. Test Window Capture for the player window, or Display Capture to determine whether the issue is specific to the window or game capture method. Display Capture can include unrelated desktop content, so arrange the screen accordingly before testing.

OBS’s troubleshooting guide covers capture alternatives and game limitations; it does not establish that YouTube VOD playback is universally blocked from capture. A black rectangle by itself is not enough to conclude that DRM is responsible. The actual cause depends on the particular video, playback route, capture source, and what appears in each preview.
Check YouTube separately for live-content interruptions
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Its help page says that a placeholder may replace the stream and that a stream may be interrupted or terminated if identified material remains (Copyright issues with live streams). This is distinct from an OBS capture failure: a rights action is not repaired by changing Game Capture settings, and not every black picture during VOD playback is a copyright action. Check YouTube Studio for a warning before drawing that conclusion.

YouTube’s livestream terms state that the provider represents having the necessary rights to the content (Livestream terms and conditions). Make sure you have the rights needed for the material in the rerun.
