You can send a video from an Ubuntu VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg by creating a YouTube event, copying its RTMPS URL and stream key, making the media available on the server, and running FFmpeg with settings that match the video you want to publish. A headless VPS cannot automatically access your laptop’s camera or capture card; for prerecorded video, upload or otherwise make the file available to the server. YouTube’s encoder settings do not specify a special bitrate for India, and the best VPS region depends on the provider’s route and sustained outbound capacity—not location alone.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s streaming setup guidance.
- An Ubuntu VPS that can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint and sustain the selected audio-and-video bitrate.
- A source available to the VPS: for example, a video file uploaded to the server or an accessible mounted location. A remote input must remain reachable throughout the stream.
- FFmpeg built with the encoder and output protocol you intend to use. Confirm the installed build rather than assuming every Ubuntu package has identical capabilities.
- Permission to stream the source material, including its music and other included content.
This workflow is for encoding media accessible to a server. A camera feed requires a camera or capture path the VPS can access; a typical remote, headless machine has no direct access to devices connected to your computer.
Create the YouTube event and find its stream URL and key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then open Live Control Room.
- Create or schedule the event and open its stream settings.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Use the values from the current event; do not guess, reuse a value from an unrelated event, or publish a real key.
- If you want an encrypted connection, select or reveal the RTMPS URL in the event settings. Do not assume that an initially displayed RTMP address is RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as encrypted RTMP in its RTMPS guidance.
Treat the stream key as a password. Keep it out of public scripts, screenshots, logs, and shell history. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation notes that the server hostname is needed for TLS SNI authentication; if a TLS connection fails, verify the hostname and URL provided for the event.
Prepare the Ubuntu VPS and inspect the source
Install and verify FFmpeg
Install FFmpeg using a package or build suitable for your Ubuntu release. Then inspect what is installed:

Check that the build provides the encoders and output protocol your command will use—for the example below, that means libx264, AAC audio encoding, and RTMPS output support. A package’s version and build options can vary, so the commands above are checks, not a promise that every installation includes the same components.
Check the media and the server’s capacity
Inspect the file’s video dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, and codecs before choosing an output profile. The sample command below targets 1080p at 30 fps; if your source has different dimensions or frame rate, decide whether to preserve those characteristics or deliberately scale and convert the output. A source file is not necessarily compatible for direct stream copy just because FFmpeg can read it.

Software encoding consumes CPU, and the VPS’s outbound route must sustain the combined video and audio bitrate. Capacity depends on the media, encoding mode, concurrent workloads, provider, and route. There is no universally correct vCPU or RAM size established for every workload. Test from the VPS and leave enough headroom for stable delivery rather than assuming a particular India location guarantees a good route to YouTube.
Choose YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s current live encoder settings recommend constant bitrate (CBR), keyframes every two seconds, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The following H.264 figures are YouTube’s listed minimum and recommended video bitrates; they are not India-specific network requirements.

| Output profile | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p, 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p, 60 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p, 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p, 60 fps, H.264 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
For stereo audio, YouTube’s guidance gives 128 Kbps at 44.1 kHz. Its encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the bitrate to the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually intend to send: for example, the H.264 recommendation for 1080p30 is 14 Mbps, not the 10 Mbps recommendation listed for AV1/H.265 at that profile. These are encoder recommendations, not guarantees of viewer quality.
Pick a profile that fits the source and VPS
- 720p versus 1080p: 720p requires less video bitrate in YouTube’s table. Use it if the source or available sustained upload capacity makes 1080p impractical.
- 30 versus 60 fps: 60 fps is appropriate only when the source and use case benefit from it and the VPS can encode and send it reliably. YouTube lists higher H.264 recommendations for 1080p60 than 1080p30.
- Re-encode versus stream copy: re-encoding lets you set the output codec, bitrate, frame rate, and keyframe interval, but uses compute. Stream copy avoids re-encoding, but only works when the source’s streams and container are acceptable for the intended ingest; it does not make incompatible settings compliant.
- Software versus hardware encoding: software encoding depends on available CPU and preset; hardware encoding is an option only if the VPS actually exposes a compatible accelerator and FFmpeg encoder. Verify availability and test the chosen encoder before relying on it.
Loop a prerecorded video with FFmpeg
For file input, FFmpeg’s -re reads at native, real-time pace; -stream_loop -1 loops the input indefinitely. The command below is an illustrative 1080p30 H.264 profile with a two-second keyframe interval. It is not a tested command for every file or Ubuntu build; some sources need scaling, explicit stream mapping, timestamp adjustments, a different encoder, or other changes.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-r 30 -g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "$RTMPS_URL/$STREAM_KEY"
The video bitrate is set to YouTube’s 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation for 1080p30. At 30 fps, -g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, corresponding to two seconds. The command assumes the input has usable audio; if it does not, the audio options may fail and should be adjusted. It also assumes a suitable libx264 build and RTMPS protocol support.
Supply RTMPS_URL and STREAM_KEY securely from the event settings, keeping the key out of shell history, logs, and shared files. Do not paste a real stream key into a public example or script. FFmpeg’s documentation describes -re as real-time input pacing and -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping; the protocol documentation covers RTMPS behavior.

Start the stream and verify it in Live Control Room
- Start FFmpeg and check that the process continues running without connection or encoding errors.
- Open the event’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm that the picture is present, movement looks right, and audio is audible.
- Check stream-health notices and the actual output against the selected profile: bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, and presence of audio and video.
- End the encoder process when finished, then end the event in YouTube Studio as appropriate.
YouTube says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Its guidance recommends a test with movement and audio similar to the planned stream, followed by monitoring stream health and reviewing messages. YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours; do not rely on this as a 24/7 archive.
Fix common FFmpeg and YouTube warnings
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming data or no preview | FFmpeg process status, event URL, stream key, VPS connectivity, and RTMPS support in the installed build. | Confirm the process is running; copy the URL and key again from the current event; verify the endpoint is reachable and the build supports RTMPS. |
| TLS/SSL failure or timeout | The URL scheme, hostname, TLS SNI, and whether the required port is reachable. | Use the RTMPS URL and hostname from Live Control Room. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance says port 443 may need to be specified; check that the VPS network permits the connection. |
| Low or high bitrate warning | Actual output rate versus the chosen YouTube profile and whether the server’s route is stable. | Correct the encoder bitrate/profile or reduce the output resolution or frame rate. Check sustained outbound capacity from the VPS. |
| Frame-rate or GOP/keyframe warning | Output frame rate and keyframe interval—not just the input file’s advertised values. | Set output rate and keyframe frequency deliberately. For a 30 fps output, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds. |
| Missing audio or video | Whether the source contains the expected stream and whether FFmpeg maps and encodes it. | Inspect the source streams and adjust mapping or encoding options for that file. |
| Starvation, stutters, or unstable health | Whether encoding is keeping pace and the outbound connection is sustaining the combined bitrate. | Check CPU load and network behavior; lower the workload or profile if either cannot keep pace. VPS performance and routes vary by provider and workload. |
YouTube’s Live Streaming API health fields cover issues including low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, long GOP/keyframe interval, missing audio or video, and stream starvation. See the API reference for those diagnostic fields.
What changes when the VPS is in India?
The FFmpeg workflow and YouTube’s encoder settings are the same; YouTube does not publish a separate India bitrate table. An India-region VPS may be convenient for administration or media transfer, but region alone does not establish the quality of its route to YouTube ingest. Compare providers using current region availability, sustained egress or transfer limits, CPU/GPU availability, and monitoring or recovery options. Those details vary and must be checked with the provider; no VPS provider or instance size is established here as a tested recommendation.
