To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Ubuntu, add the video to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable Loop, then send the stream to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. You can run this workflow from India; the cited YouTube and OBS setup guidance does not identify a separate India-only configuration.
What you need before you start
- An Ubuntu computer with OBS Studio installed and the video file stored locally. OBS’s Linux Media Source supports common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. OBS Media Sources
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- A stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the chosen stream quality.
- Permission to broadcast all video and audio in the loop.
Install OBS Studio on Ubuntu
First check which Ubuntu version you are running. OBS’s current Ubuntu PPA instructions apply to Ubuntu 24.04 and newer; for older releases, consult OBS’s Linux installation article rather than assuming the same commands apply. OBS Studio downloads · OBS Linux installation
For Ubuntu 24.04 and newer, OBS documents this PPA installation route:
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:obsproject/obs-studio
sudo apt update
sudo apt install obs-studioReview the current OBS instructions for your release before running the commands. When installation finishes, open OBS Studio.

Create a looping video scene in OBS
- In OBS, create or select a scene in the Scenes panel.
- In Sources, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if you wish, then select OK.
- In the Media Source properties, select the local video file. Enable Loop, then select OK.
- Check the OBS preview. Resize or reposition the source if needed so the video fills the canvas as intended.
Let the file play through once during a test and check that it restarts cleanly. Confirm the picture and audio remain present at the loop boundary; this catches file or scene issues before a long broadcast.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create an encoder stream or schedule one. YouTube recommends setting up an encoder stream at least two hours before an event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes beforehand. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
- In the stream setup, copy the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service if available, and enter the stream key. If using a custom server configuration, enter the stream URL as well. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private; if it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room. - In OBS, select Start Streaming. Return to Live Control Room and wait for the incoming preview. Check the image, audio and stream health; for a scheduled encoder stream, select Go live after the preview is ready. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder
- To end the broadcast, end the stream in YouTube and stop sending from OBS. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube Help: Archive live streams
Choose a stable stream quality and connection
Match quality to your upload capacity
Choose an encoder quality your available upload connection can sustain. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% of upload bandwidth unused as headroom and notes that other users or devices on a shared connection can reduce the capacity available to the stream. Test upload bandwidth and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. YouTube Help: Stream settings

Use RTMPS for a typical H.264 loop
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts stream data sent to its servers. For an ordinary H.264 prerecorded loop, use a YouTube-compatible RTMPS configuration unless you have a specific reason to use HLS. YouTube Help: Stream settings
HLS is intended for compatible encoder or codec setups and has higher latency than RTMP. YouTube’s documented HLS configuration calls for TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and HTTPS POST/PUT requests. These are configuration requirements, not a recommendation to use HLS for every loop. YouTube Help: Stream settings

Latency and testing
For prerecorded programming where real-time conversation is not central, normal or low latency may be more appropriate than prioritizing the lowest possible delay. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase buffering. Test with similar video movement and audio, preview the stream before going live, and monitor stream health during the broadcast. Confirm broadcast rights
Use only video and audio you own, have permission to broadcast, or are otherwise entitled to use. YouTube’s stream settings guidance warns that rights apply to both audio and video. There is no special India-only OBS setup established here
The cited official OBS and YouTube setup instructions do not establish a special configuration or regional exception for India. Check the channel’s current Live Control Room and applicable local rules. The Ubuntu and OBS steps above are the same workflow to follow unless YouTube presents account-specific requirements.

- The Media Source is blank or will not play: Confirm the selected file path is correct and that the file is in a format supported by OBS Media Source. Reopen the source properties and select the file again.
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and enable Loop.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is streaming, the stream URL and key are correct, and the key belongs to the active stream setup. Keep the key secret; reset it in Live Control Room if it was exposed.
- The stream health is poor or playback buffers: Reduce the output quality to what the connection can sustain, preserve YouTube’s recommended upload headroom, and check whether other users or devices are using the connection.
- The loop restarts with missing audio or picture: Review the source and file, then test the complete loop boundary in OBS before broadcasting again.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
