You can broadcast a prerecorded gaming video as a YouTube Live event from a Linux VPS by sending it to YouTube’s encoder ingest URL with FFmpeg, paced in real time. Create or select a stream in YouTube Studio, protect its stream key, match FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s current encoder settings, then monitor the preview and stream health in Live Control Room. The example below is a starting point, not a tested one-command solution: your file, FFmpeg build, VPS capacity, and stream settings all matter.
What you need before starting
- A gaming VOD file stored somewhere the VPS can read, such as its local disk or mounted storage.
- A YouTube channel with access to create a live stream in YouTube Studio.
- A Linux VPS whose CPU can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, and whose sustained outbound capacity and traffic allowance can carry the stream.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the encoder and RTMPS support you intend to use.
There is no universal minimum VPS specification supported here. Encoding load varies with resolution, frame rate, encoder and preset; network suitability depends on sustained bandwidth and the provider’s traffic limits and policies. Check those limits rather than assuming a VPS can handle a continuous broadcast.
Create a YouTube encoder stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube describes the key as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Treat the key as a credential. Do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or expose it in screenshots, shell history, or service logs. YouTube says an owner or manager can reset a compromised key.
Use the stream-specific RTMPS ingest address when available and supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP; FFmpeg documents RTMPS as RTMP over SSL. See YouTube’s encoder settings and FFmpeg protocol documentation.
Choose resolution, bitrate, and keyframe settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder-settings table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate you plan to send. The recommended bitrate depends on those choices; it is not a VPS speed guarantee. For example, YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations list 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps (YouTube Help; publication year not stated). Verify the current table before configuring your stream: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

- On-the-Go Convenience: With an integrated handle and lightweight design (2.8 lbs), our lap desk is portable for travel or moving around the house, offering flexibility in any space.
- Codec: YouTube’s current guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 options. Choose a codec supported by your FFmpeg build and the ingest guidance for your stream.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At a fixed 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to a GOP of 60 frames; at 60 fps, it corresponds to 120 frames.
- Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance supports up to 60 fps. Choose a rate the source, VPS encoder, and outbound connection can sustain.
- Latency: Lower latency can reduce delivery delay but may increase buffering or affect smoothness. For a prerecorded VOD where live audience interaction is not central, normal latency is a reasonable starting point; that is a use-case recommendation, not a YouTube requirement.
Run FFmpeg at real-time pace
FFmpeg’s -re option reads a file at its native rate, which is useful when sending a file as a live stream. Replace every placeholder below with values appropriate for your stream and source. The sample assumes one video stream and one audio stream and is illustrative, not tested.
ffmpeg -re -i /path/to/gameplay-vod.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v REPLACE_WITH_YOUTUBE_RECOMMENDED_VIDEO_BITRATE
-maxrate REPLACE_WITH_YOUTUBE_RECOMMENDED_VIDEO_BITRATE
-bufsize REPLACE_WITH_APPROPRIATE_RATE_CONTROL_BUFFER
-r REPLACE_WITH_FRAME_RATE -g REPLACE_WITH_KEYFRAME_INTERVAL_IN_FRAMES
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv 'rtmps://REPLACE_WITH_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/REPLACE_WITH_STREAM_KEY'
For example, if your output is fixed at 30 fps, a two-second keyframe interval means setting -g 60; at 60 fps, it means -g 120. These values translate the recommended interval into frames. Set bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your selected mode rather than copying an unrelated example.

The command’s mapping will fail or omit content if the file has no audio, multiple audio tracks, or a different stream layout. Inspect the input and map the intended streams deliberately. Confirm that your FFmpeg build contains libx264 and RTMPS protocol support, or adapt the command to an available encoder and protocol. Store the real key through a protected secret source with restrictive permissions instead of putting it in a public script or service log. FFmpeg documents -re, RTMP output, and protocol options in its FFmpeg documentation.
Optional recovery for transient output failures
FFmpeg’s documentation includes an RTMP FIFO-muxer example using -attempt_recovery 1 and a one-second recovery wait. This may help with temporary output failures, but it does not guarantee that a YouTube broadcast will resume without interruption, and support for the needed options can vary by build. Check the documentation for your installed FFmpeg version and test privately before relying on it. See FFmpeg format and muxer documentation.

Preview, monitor, and end the live event
- Start FFmpeg and wait for the feed preview to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- Check stream health messages before and during the broadcast. YouTube’s live streaming API documentation lists issues including low bitrate, missing audio or video, long keyframe intervals, and unsupported codecs: YouTube Live Streaming API errors.
- If the stream is not set to auto-start, start the broadcast from the control room after confirming the incoming feed.
- When the VOD is finished, end the stream in YouTube Studio and stop the FFmpeg process.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on this guidance to promise automatic archiving for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or longer. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
| No incoming preview | Incorrect stream URL or key, unsupported RTMPS build, or FFmpeg output failure. | Copy the URL and key again from the selected encoder stream; verify the FFmpeg build supports the protocol and inspect its error output without exposing the key. |
| Low bitrate or unstable health | The selected bitrate exceeds sustained VPS outbound capacity, or network/traffic limits interfere. | Check provider bandwidth and traffic policies; select a mode and bitrate from YouTube’s table that the VPS can sustain. |
| Missing audio or video | The input does not contain the streams selected by -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0, or mapping targets the wrong tracks. |
Inspect the file’s streams and update the maps; confirm audio and video are present in the incoming preview. |
| Long keyframe interval warning | The GOP value does not match the chosen frame rate and interval. | Set GOP frames from the desired interval: at fixed frame rate, multiply frames per second by interval in seconds; keep within YouTube’s recommended two-second interval and four-second maximum. |
| Unsupported codec or encoder error | The command requests an encoder not present in the FFmpeg build, or the chosen output codec does not match the intended settings. | Check available encoders and protocol support, then choose a supported codec and follow YouTube’s corresponding current table. |
| Stream stops during a network interruption | Temporary output failure or inadequate connection stability. | Review FFmpeg’s FIFO recovery options for your installed build and test them; do not assume they ensure uninterrupted resumption. |
