You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from an old PC using GStreamer, but the exact pipeline depends on the PC’s operating system, GStreamer version and plugins, the file’s codecs, and whether the installed RTMP sink can deliver securely over RTMPS. Set up YouTube Live first, choose an encoding setting the computer and upload connection can sustain, then test the incoming preview before starting the broadcast.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance.
- The prerecorded video file, plus its video and audio codec details if available.
- GStreamer and the plugins needed to read the file, decode and encode its tracks, mux them for RTMP, and send the stream.
- A reliable upload connection with more sustained capacity than the bitrate you choose.
There is no safe universal GStreamer command for every “old PC.” The correct elements and options depend on the installed GStreamer build and plugins, file format, operating system, and RTMPS support. Check these on the machine rather than pasting a pipeline intended for a different setup.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select a stream, then open its stream settings and copy the stream URL and stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL shown by YouTube. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP sent over TLS/SSL; in Live Control Room, use the lock control to reveal the RTMPS URL. A plain
rtmp://destination is not automatically equivalent to a working secure RTMPS connection. See Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance.
Prepare GStreamer on the old PC
Check the actual installation
Confirm the GStreamer version and that the required file reader, demuxer, decoder, encoder, muxer, and network sink plugins are installed. GStreamer documents rtmpsink in its RTMP plugin package; its reference describes sending encoded FLV video over RTMP. That documentation alone does not establish that the sink on your machine supports YouTube’s RTMPS transport. Check the local element’s capabilities and options before choosing the destination or writing a command. See the GStreamer rtmpsink reference.
Build the pipeline for the file and encoder
The pipeline needs to read the recording, decode tracks if necessary, encode video and audio in formats accepted by YouTube’s current ingest settings, package them for RTMP, and send them to YouTube using the URL and key. The exact elements vary: a file that is already encoded appropriately may need a different path from one that must be decoded and re-encoded. Choose an encoder the PC can sustain; do not assume hardware acceleration is available or that a particular software encoder will keep up.

Do not put the stream key in a public script, screenshot, or shared command. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before broadcasting.
Choose settings the PC and connection can sustain
YouTube recommends RTMPS and documents H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. Use the codec and settings supported by both your GStreamer encoder and the YouTube ingest configuration. YouTube’s current guidance is at YouTube’s encoder settings page.

For an older PC, start with a modest resolution and frame rate and test with representative movement and audio. The PC’s age alone does not tell you what it can encode steadily: CPU or GPU, cooling, operating system, GStreamer build, and plugins all matter.

These are YouTube’s ingest figures, not a promise that an Indian broadband or mobile connection will sustain them. Compare the chosen bitrate with sustained upload capacity and test at the target setting; allow headroom rather than treating a brief speed-test peak as reliable capacity. If upload or encoding is unstable, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again.

Send the feed and start the broadcast
- Start the verified GStreamer pipeline with the chosen file, encoders, muxing, RTMPS destination if supported, and YouTube stream key.
- Wait for the feed to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check both picture and audio, then review stream health before starting the broadcast.
- When the preview and health indicators are acceptable, click Go live in Live Control Room. The encoder sends the feed; the creator starts the broadcast in YouTube’s control room.
- Monitor stream health during the event. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived after they end; do not rely on that rule for longer streams.
Preflight checklist for a prerecorded stream
- Play the recording locally and confirm the intended picture, audio, duration, and soundtrack.
- Test the pipeline and YouTube preview with representative movement and sound, not only a still opening frame.
- Confirm the stream key and ingest URL are current, and verify RTMPS support rather than assuming a plain RTMP sink will work over TLS.
- Check that the PC does not fall behind and the upload connection remains stable at the selected settings.
- Make sure you have the rights needed to stream the recording. YouTube’s copyright rules apply to prerecorded material as well as live video; a live broadcast may be interrupted or restricted if it includes material you are not authorized to use. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams.
- Consider YouTube’s reused-content and monetization policies separately from copyright permission. Having permission to use material does not by itself establish eligibility for monetization. Check YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Troubleshooting
No stream appears in YouTube
Check that live streaming is enabled, that the selected stream is open in Live Control Room, and that the URL and key were copied correctly. If this is the channel’s first live stream, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
The pipeline reports a missing element or plugin
The installed GStreamer build may not include the element needed for the file’s demuxing, decoding, encoding, muxing, or network output. Identify the missing element and install the matching plugin for that operating system and GStreamer release; a pipeline from another machine may rely on components you do not have.

RTMPS connection fails
Verify that the sink installed on the PC supports the secure transport YouTube provided. GStreamer’s rtmpsink reference describes RTMP output; do not infer RTMPS capability solely from the element name. If the installed sink cannot use the provided RTMPS endpoint, use a compatible transport implementation instead of silently switching to an unverified plain-RTMP configuration.
YouTube preview is choppy or stream health degrades
Separate encoding load from network load: test the PC at a lower resolution or frame rate, then compare upload stability at the selected bitrate. A machine that cannot encode in real time or a connection that cannot sustain the outgoing rate can both impair the feed. Test again before the broadcast rather than assuming a setting works because it starts.

Video or audio is missing or incompatible
Check the source file’s tracks and codecs, the decoders and encoders selected in the pipeline, and whether the muxed output matches YouTube’s current ingest settings. A pipeline that handles one file may fail on another because of different codecs or container details.
