- Set up a YouTube live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s setup guidance; this is an activation delay, not a stream-duration limit.
Set up a multi-file playlist in OBS
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you intend to stream.
- Open the source properties and add the media files to its playlist.
- Choose the desired playback behavior using the source’s loop or shuffle controls. Check the order and playback locally before going live.
- Configure the OBS streaming service, server, and stream key using the YouTube live-stream details. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to the associated stream.

Loop one file instead
If the broadcast should repeat one supported local video rather than cycle through a list, add an OBS Media Source, select the file, and enable its Loop option. OBS documents Media Source support for video and audio files and explains that Loop restarts playback after completion. Plan for playback, transmission, and recovery separately
A playlist looping correctly is only one part of a continuous broadcast. Consider three separate layers when comparing OBS, GStreamer, hardware, or hosted options:
- Media playback: Are the files available, in the right order, and set to loop or shuffle as intended?
- Encoding and transmission: Is the encoder configured with YouTube’s current server URL and stream key, and can the internet connection sustain the chosen output?
- Supervision and recovery: What happens if the media process, computer, home network, or YouTube ingest connection fails?
OBS documents automatic reconnect as an advanced option, but the cited documentation does not describe a complete monitoring and failover system. A computer-based setup also depends on the host remaining powered, the operating system and OBS continuing to run, and the network staying available. Test the entire chain and decide how you will detect a failure; do not treat a loop or reconnect setting as a 24/7 uptime guarantee.

Only stream material you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, footage, and any third-party material inside a documentary. A file being publicly available or already present on YouTube does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it. Check the rights and licence terms for every item in a playlist, and review YouTube’s current live-stream policies before going live. Reused material can also raise monetization questions separate from copyright: permission to use a video does not, by itself, guarantee eligibility for monetization.
Keep the stream key private and use YouTube’s stream setup for the intended broadcast. If YouTube interrupts or restricts a stream, resolve the platform notice or rights issue rather than attempting to evade enforcement by reconnecting.

Troubleshooting a playlist stream
- The playlist does not appear or play: Confirm VLC is installed, matches OBS’s architecture, and can access the listed files. Recheck paths and source properties.
- A single clip stops at the end: Confirm that the source is Media Source and its Loop option is enabled. For several files, use VLC Video and check its playlist loop setting.
- YouTube does not receive the broadcast: Check that the encoder has the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and that the intended live stream is active in YouTube Studio. Treat the key as sensitive and replace it if exposed.
- The stream disconnects: Check internet stability, host power and sleep settings, and OBS status. Automatic reconnect may help with some interruptions, but does not recover every host, network, or ingest failure.
- Playback or stream quality is inconsistent: Review OBS output and bitrate settings against the available connection and the needs of the video. Test before relying on the setup; the cited sources do not prescribe one bitrate for every resolution, frame rate, or network.
- The stream is blocked or interrupted over content: Check YouTube’s notice and the rights to every audio and video item. Reconnect settings do not resolve copyright or policy restrictions.
