To send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Linux server, create or schedule an encoder event in YouTube Studio, test an FFmpeg command in the foreground, then run that tested command as a supervised systemd service. FFmpeg must read the file in real time; systemd can restart a failed process, but neither restart nor scheduling guarantees an uninterrupted broadcast. Check YouTube’s preview and stream health before the event.
How the YouTube Live setup fits together
YouTube’s viewer-facing event and the encoder feed are separate things: its Live Streaming API calls them a liveBroadcast and a liveStream. Your FFmpeg process sends media to the ingest endpoint using the server URL and stream key provided for the stream; the event is what viewers open.
For an event viewers should be able to find ahead of time, schedule it in YouTube Studio. YouTube says a scheduled event can provide a shareable watch-page URL and reminders. Scheduling does not start the broadcast: the encoder must connect, you must check the preview in Live Control Room, and then you must click Go live.
Prepare the YouTube event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, then create or schedule an encoder stream. Set the title, privacy, and event details.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for the stream. Use the current values from Studio, not an endpoint copied from an unrelated tutorial. YouTube may allow prior settings to be reused.
- Keep the key secret. YouTube says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Store it in a root- or service-user-readable-only configuration file or a secrets manager. Do not commit it to source control or expose it in a public script, world-readable unit file, screenshot, shell history, or logs. If exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the service.
YouTube’s secure ingest option is RTMPS. Its endpoint configuration requires the correct server name for TLS authentication and port 443. Check that the installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol before relying on it; ffmpeg -protocols lists the protocols compiled into that build. Plain RTMP and RTMPS are not interchangeable URLs.

Test the FFmpeg feed in the foreground
First test with the real media file and the channel’s actual ingest details. FFmpeg documents this real-time file-to-RTMP pattern:
ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -f flv 'rtmp://server/app/stream-key'
This is a shape example, not a ready-to-run YouTube command. Replace the input and URL with your own values; for RTMPS, use the secure ingest address shown for your stream and confirm protocol support in your FFmpeg build. The -re option makes file input proceed at real-time speed rather than sending the file as fast as it can be read.
Do not assume -c copy will work for every file. Whether stream copy is suitable depends on the source’s codecs, timestamps, frame rate, audio layout, and container compatibility. If the file needs transcoding, choose encoding settings for that specific source and YouTube’s current recommendations. The available setup guidance does not establish a universal bitrate or codec command, so inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health status instead of treating a generic setting as verified.

Run the command interactively and confirm FFmpeg stays connected and YouTube receives a preview. Resolve errors before placing the command under systemd; a service manager cannot correct a bad URL, incompatible media, or unsupported output protocol.
Run the tested command under systemd
Create a service account and protected configuration
Use an unprivileged service account, absolute paths, and a working directory the account can access. Put credentials in a separately protected configuration file rather than in a publicly readable unit. Check file access as the service account, not only as an administrator.
Write a unit around the foreground process
The following is an implementation skeleton, not a tested unit for every distribution or systemd version. Replace the paths and command with the foreground command you verified. Confirm the installed systemd’s parsing and expansion behavior for the environment file and arguments; systemd syntax is not identical to shell syntax. If the URL or secret cannot be passed safely this way, use a correctly escaped argument or a small wrapper with safe argument handling.

Protect /etc/youtube-live/stream.env from other users and keep it out of source control. Depending on the server’s threat model, process arguments may be observable to local users; do not put a key on a command line if that exposure is unacceptable. Review the service and secret handling for the installed systemd version before use.
Load and inspect the service
- After saving the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - When ready to connect, start it with
sudo systemctl start youtube-live.service. Enable it at boot only if automatic startup after reboot is intended:sudo systemctl enable youtube-live.service. - Check
sudo systemctl status youtube-live.serviceandsudo journalctl -u youtube-live.servicefor the process state and FFmpeg output. - In Live Control Room, wait for the preview and inspect stream health. For a scheduled event, click Go live only after checking the preview.
Choose the right file and service lifecycle
A finite file ends
When FFmpeg reaches the end of a finite input, the feed normally stops. Decide whether that is the intended end of the event or whether the program should repeat. Test the installed FFmpeg’s looping behavior, timestamps, and event duration explicitly before scheduling a repeat. Do not treat Restart=on-failure as a media-loop option: it responds to process failure, not normal completion of an input.
A restart is recovery, not continuity
With Restart=on-failure, systemd can start FFmpeg again after a qualifying process exit. FFmpeg also documents FIFO output patterns with retry and recovery options for temporary network problems. These approaches address different failure cases; a reconnect can create a gap or interact with the YouTube broadcast’s state. Test recovery with the target event and monitor Live Control Room rather than promising uninterrupted playback.

Stop the encoder when the event is over
After the event ends in Live Control Room, stop sending encoder data, as YouTube’s guidance directs. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify that the resulting archive is present and playable if you need a recording.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Preflight before the scheduled event
- Confirm the configured service user can read the video and configuration file and access the required directories.
- Check outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends 20% headroom over the total stream bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where used; this is a recommendation, not a guarantee of delivery.
- Allow time for testing: YouTube suggests preparing at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event.
- Check that the watch page is accessible to its intended audience, including from a mobile device where relevant.
- Inspect audio and video in the preview, read YouTube’s stream-health warnings, and watch the FFmpeg journal for errors.
- If you are keeping a local archive, verify that the file is valid and growing as expected.
Troubleshoot common failures
YouTube shows no preview
Check that FFmpeg is still running and that it is using the URL and key currently displayed for the selected event or stream settings. Confirm that the service account can read the file and the protected configuration.
RTMPS reports TLS or connection errors
Verify that the URL is the RTMPS ingest address, port 443 is used, and TLS is connecting to the correct server name. Check ffmpeg -protocols to confirm the installed build supports the selected protocol.

The stream starts but buffers
Check YouTube’s health warnings, available outbound bandwidth, congestion on the shared network, and the bitrate being sent. Compare capacity with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom over total stream bitrate, counting both primary and backup feeds if applicable.
systemd keeps restarting FFmpeg
Read systemctl status youtube-live.service and journalctl -u youtube-live.service for the exit status and error. Verify the paths, permissions, input file, protocol support, and credential configuration under the service account. A successful interactive test does not prove that the service user has the same access.
The broadcast stops at the end of the video
That is the expected result for a finite input. Decide whether the event should end or the file should repeat, then test the looping and timestamp behavior with the installed FFmpeg before the event. A failure restart policy does not make a completed input repeat.
