You can send a prerecorded video to YouTube Live from a Windows PC without OBS by using FFmpeg. First create or schedule a live event in YouTube Studio, then use FFmpeg to send the video file to the event’s ingest URL with its stream key. The PC, FFmpeg process, and internet connection must stay available while the file plays.
What you need before you start
- A Windows PC with the video file stored locally and enough upload bandwidth to send the stream reliably.
- FFmpeg installed and accessible from Command Prompt or PowerShell.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day of the broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
- A live event in YouTube Studio, including its server URL and stream key.
This workflow broadcasts the file as an encoder-fed live event. Scheduling an event in YouTube Studio alone does not play a file from your PC; an encoder must send the video at broadcast time. This is different from simply uploading a finished video.
Set up the YouTube Live event
- Open YouTube Studio and choose Create > Go Live.
- Use the available stream setup to create an event or open the Manage tab to schedule one. Set the title, description, visibility, and start time, then save the event.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy the server URL and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream.
- Keep the event open in Live Control Room so you can check its preview and status after FFmpeg connects. YouTube’s interface and available controls can change; follow the controls displayed for your event.
YouTube’s encoder instructions are to enter the event’s server URL and stream key in the encoder. Use the exact values shown in Studio rather than reconstructing an endpoint from an example. YouTube Help.
Install and verify FFmpeg on Windows
FFmpeg is the local encoder in this method. Obtain a Windows build from a source you trust, install or extract it, and make its bin folder available in your PATH if you want to run it from any directory. Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and run:

ffmpeg -version
If Windows reports that the command is not recognized, FFmpeg is either not installed or its bin directory is not in PATH. You can instead run ffmpeg.exe by its full path, or add the directory to PATH and open a new terminal.
Send the prerecorded file to YouTube
FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), which is useful when sending a file in real time. Its protocol documentation shows file input paced this way and sent as FLV to an RTMP destination. FFmpeg documentation · FFmpeg protocol documentation.

In a terminal, change to the directory containing the file, then use this pattern, replacing the example filename and destination with your own:

The destination above is a placeholder pattern, not a universal YouTube command. Use the precise ingest URL and key format supplied by your event, and check that the encoder supports the protocol shown. For example, if YouTube presents the URL and key as separate fields, follow the encoder’s required way to combine or provide them; do not assume every endpoint uses the same path format.
-c:v copy asks FFmpeg to pass through the existing video stream without re-encoding. It can fail if the video codec, container, or stream characteristics are unsuitable for the selected output. If that happens, remove the copy option and use an encoder supported by your FFmpeg build, selecting settings appropriate to the source and YouTube event. The exact compatible encoding settings depend on the file and encoder build; the sources cited here do not establish one universal preset.

-c:a aac -b:a 128k asks FFmpeg to encode audio as AAC at the specified bitrate. If the source has no audio track, or you want to preserve compatible source audio, adjust the command accordingly. Paths containing spaces need quotation marks, as in the example.
Check the preview and control the broadcast
- Run the command shortly before the scheduled start. Keep the terminal open while FFmpeg is sending the file; closing it or shutting down the PC stops the local encoder.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and check that picture and sound are present. For a scheduled stream, use the event’s displayed control to begin the live broadcast when ready. For an immediate event, follow the status and controls shown in Studio.
- Monitor the PC and connection for the duration. The file is being sent in real time, so the computer and its internet upload connection need to remain available until playout ends.
- When the file finishes, stop FFmpeg if it has not exited, then end the event in YouTube Studio as applicable. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. YouTube Help.
RTMP or RTMPS: use the event’s actual endpoint
YouTube provides the encoder server URL and key for the event. Google documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL/TLS; the correct protocol, endpoint, application path, port, and server-name indication can matter to an implementation. Google for Developers: RTMPS ingestion. For a typical creator workflow, use the exact URL and protocol YouTube presents and confirm that your FFmpeg build and command support it. Do not substitute an RTMP example endpoint for the event’s actual settings.

Common problems and fixes
- Live streaming is not available yet: first-time YouTube activation may take up to 24 hours. Enable it in advance rather than troubleshooting it at broadcast time. YouTube Help.
- FFmpeg cannot find the file: check the current directory and filename, or use the file’s full path. Quote paths containing spaces.
- YouTube receives no signal: verify that the event is the intended one, the URL and key are copied correctly, the key has not been changed, and the terminal is still running. Confirm the endpoint protocol matches the FFmpeg output protocol.
- FFmpeg errors on output or YouTube rejects the stream: inspect the source’s codecs and tracks, then test an encoding route compatible with the file and endpoint. A pass-through video option will not make an unsupported source compatible.
- Video arrives but sound does not: confirm the file contains an audio stream and inspect FFmpeg’s output for audio mapping or encoding errors.
- Preview stutters or disconnects: check that the PC is not sleeping, the upload connection is stable, and other traffic is not saturating it. FFmpeg’s real-time pacing does not compensate for an unstable network.
- The scheduled event is not live to viewers: distinguish the encoder preview from the event’s live state and follow the Go Live control shown in Studio for that event.
