Yes. A Mac mini can play a prerecorded video into a YouTube Live broadcast: OBS Studio plays and encodes the local file, then sends the feed to YouTube. You need an eligible YouTube channel, a stable upload connection, and a test run with the exact video and settings you plan to use.

Before you start: check YouTube Live eligibility

YouTube requires the channel to be verified and to have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. If you are enabling live streaming for the first time, activation can take up to 24 hours, so check this well before the event. (YouTube Help, accessed October 3, 2026.)

  • Confirm that live streaming is enabled for the channel.
  • Choose the stream’s privacy setting—public, private, or unlisted—in YouTube Studio. Use a private or unlisted test if you do not want a rehearsal broadcast to be public.
  • Make sure you have the rights to stream both the video and its audio, and review YouTube’s applicable policies. A documentary’s availability to watch or download does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.

Schedule the broadcast and get the encoder details

If viewers should be able to find an upcoming event and opt into a reminder, schedule it in YouTube Studio rather than starting an unscheduled stream immediately.

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Open the Manage tab and schedule a stream. Set its title, description, privacy, and start time, then save it.
  3. In the stream’s settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as the password and address that let your encoder send a feed to YouTube.
  4. Keep the key private. Do not put it in a recording, show it on screen, or publish it. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room; update OBS with the replacement key.

YouTube’s exact interface labels can change. The key and stream URL belong in OBS’s stream settings; do not share either in a screenshot or public instructions.

Set up OBS to play the video

OBS Studio is a free, open-source option for this local-file workflow. Its Media Source supports macOS and common formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM. The file is played on the Mac mini while OBS encodes and sends it; YouTube receives that encoder feed as a live stream.

For one video file

  1. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast.
  2. In the scene’s Sources area, add a Media Source. Name it clearly, such as “Documentary playback.”
  3. Choose the local video file in the Media Source properties. Confirm the correct file is selected and that it plays in the OBS preview.
  4. Enable Loop only if you want the file to repeat continuously. Loop is off by default. If you want a single play-through, leave it off.
  5. Use the source option to restart playback when the source becomes active if that is appropriate for your scene workflow. Check the OBS preview after changing source visibility or switching scenes.

For a playlist

Use OBS’s VLC Video source when you need a playlist rather than a single file. VLC must be installed for that source to appear in OBS. Add the files in the intended order, configure playlist looping if required, and preview transitions between items before the event. A playlist is useful for a sequence; a single Media Source is simpler for one documentary.

Check video and audio in the scene

  • Confirm the image fits the canvas without unintended cropping or black bars. Match the OBS video canvas and output resolution to the program you intend to send.
  • Watch the OBS audio meters while the video plays. Check that dialogue, music, and any other intended audio are present and not clipping.
  • Listen to the actual output, not just the meters. A muted source, wrong audio device, or an unexpectedly quiet track can be missed by a visual check.
  • Use the complete program, or a representative test section with motion and audio, before scheduling a long broadcast.

Connect OBS to YouTube and choose stable settings

  1. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select the YouTube service or the appropriate YouTube preset if it is available in your version.
  2. Enter the stream URL and key from Live Control Room if OBS asks for them. Keep the key confidential.
  3. In OBS output and video settings, select an encoder, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the Mac mini and your upload connection can sustain. Match the frame rate to the source where practical rather than needlessly increasing it.
  4. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations as a starting point, then test the complete setup. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; keyframes should not exceed four seconds.
  5. For SDR video, YouTube recommends Rec. 709. For a typical 1080p SDR documentary, avoid adding 4K or HDR complexity unless the source, encoder, Mac hardware, and connection are all prepared for it.

YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates are listed below. These are guidance values, not a guarantee that a particular Mac mini or network can sustain them.

Output resolution and frame rate H.264 recommendation AV1 or H.265 recommendation
1080p at 30 fps 14 Mbps 10 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 17 Mbps 12 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 8 Mbps 6 Mbps

These figures are YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the resolutions, frame rates, and codecs shown, not measurements of your Mac mini. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; stereo audio at a recommended 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps bitrate; and up to 60 fps. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube requires AAC. Use a codec and audio format supported by the OBS encoder and your source.

Leave upload headroom

Measure outbound upload performance, not just download speed. YouTube recommends that the stream fit within available upload bandwidth with 20% headroom. For example, a selected video bitrate of 14 Mbps calls for at least 16.8 Mbps of usable upload capacity by that headroom calculation; other network traffic can reduce what is available to OBS. Prefer a wired connection where practical, and avoid relying on a speed test’s download result as proof that the stream will hold steady.

Test the whole path before viewers arrive

  1. Run the actual file in OBS with the intended scene, audio, encoder, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and connection.
  2. Start OBS streaming while the YouTube event is still private or unlisted if appropriate. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room’s preview, and check its stream-health messages.
  3. Play motion and sound, confirm that the audio is synchronized and audible, and verify that the picture is not frozen, cropped, or unexpectedly low quality.
  4. Check the viewer-facing watch page on the channel and on a mobile device. Make sure the scheduled event and privacy setting behave as intended.
  5. Stop the test stream and verify its state in Studio before preparing the real event.

YouTube’s operational guidance suggests setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder 15 minutes before the scheduled event. These are preparation recommendations, not technical requirements. Keep OBS and Live Control Room visible during the broadcast so you can notice audio, video, or stream-health problems.

End the broadcast cleanly

When the program is over, stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s operational tips say to stop the encoder after the event has stopped on YouTube. Confirm the ending state in Live Control Room and check that the archive is present. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours; do not assume a longer stream will be archived the same way.

Common problems and fixes

  • You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification, recent live-streaming restrictions, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation may take up to 24 hours.
  • YouTube receives no video: Confirm that OBS is streaming, the correct stream URL and key are entered, and the Media Source file plays in the OBS preview. If you reset the key, replace the old key in OBS.
  • The stream drops or reports poor health: Check upload performance and competing network use. Confirm that the chosen bitrate leaves YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and test again over the connection you will use for the event.
  • Video stutters or the Mac struggles: Test the full file and output settings on the target Mac mini. Reduce the output resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the machine or connection cannot sustain the chosen settings; do not treat YouTube’s bitrate table as a hardware performance guarantee.
  • There is no sound or the levels are wrong: Inspect the source and OBS audio meters, then listen to the stream preview. Confirm that the selected audio format is supported and that no source or output is muted.
  • A playlist source is missing: Install VLC, which OBS requires for its VLC Video source, then reopen or check OBS’s source options.
  • The video stops at the end: Enable Media Source’s Loop setting for a single file, or configure playlist looping for a VLC Video source. Looping is not enabled by default for Media Source.

When local playback is not the right fit

OBS on the Mac mini is a flexible way to control a local file, scenes, and production elements, but the Mac and its internet connection must remain available while it plays and streams. If you need scheduled prerecorded playout without keeping your computer on, YouTube’s encoder directory also lists the AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as hardware that can schedule prerecorded media and stream directly to YouTube Live. It is a separate appliance, not a requirement for the Mac mini method. YouTube’s directory also lists Ecamm as Mac production software and Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams; confirm current features and terms with each provider before choosing one.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Instead of leaving the Mac mini running, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud plays the uploaded video; it does not stream from a camera.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Each slot streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
  • If YouTube drops the stream, StreamNeo automatically recovers.
  • The first day is free with no card required, one free day per account. Monthly service is $9.99 per month.
