You can run a nonstop YouTube stream from a spare PC by using encoder software such as OBS Studio, connecting it to a YouTube live stream with the stream URL and key, and choosing output settings the computer and internet connection can sustain. The PC, encoder, video source and network all need to keep working; no universal minimum PC specification or uninterrupted-operation guarantee is established for this setup, so test your actual equipment before relying on it.
Before you set up the spare PC
Check whether the channel can go live
YouTube’s current live-streaming tips require a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the broadcast you intend to run.
Check the whole setup, not just the processor
There is no single published minimum CPU, GPU or memory specification that establishes whether every spare PC can encode a particular stream continuously. The result depends on the computer, encoder settings, video source and available upload capacity. Test the intended scene and output mode on the actual machine; an old PC that can play a video is not automatically able to encode and send it reliably.
Plan for the dependencies that have to remain available: the PC must stay powered on, OBS and the video source must keep running, and the network connection must remain usable. A failure in power, software or connectivity can interrupt the broadcast.

Set up the stream in YouTube and OBS
- Enable live streaming in advance. In YouTube Studio, confirm the channel is eligible and that live streaming is enabled. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement.
- Create or manage the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or select the live stream you want to use. Find the stream URL and stream key for the encoder connection.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret credential: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to that stream. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots you share.
- Connect OBS. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service if available, and enter or connect the stream credentials. If configuring a custom server, use the stream URL and key provided by YouTube. YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS and recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Build the scene. Add the video or other intended visual source and audio source in OBS. Confirm that the image moves as expected and that the audio is present, correctly routed and not unintentionally silent.
- Set output and video options. Choose a resolution and frame rate that the spare PC can encode and the connection can upload steadily. Use the codec-appropriate YouTube guidance below as a reference, then test rather than assuming the numbers guarantee performance.
- Review stream behavior. In YouTube’s stream settings, check auto-start and auto-stop so the encoder’s start and stop actions fit your workflow. For a non-interactive documentary loop or ambient broadcast, normal latency is a reasonable default; lower latency can increase playback buffering and is more useful when interacting with viewers.
- Test, then go live. Start a representative test with the actual audio and moving video. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before relying on the broadcast. Once live, continue monitoring health and output quality.
Encoder settings to use as a reference
YouTube’s published encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS transport; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 frames per second; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate encoding (CBR). YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the recommended encrypted transport.
The table gives YouTube’s H.264 bitrate figures for common output modes. They describe YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not guaranteed performance on your computer or network. “Minimum” is not a reliability target: available upload capacity can vary, and the encoder itself must be able to sustain the selected mode.

Use the values for the resolution and frame rate you actually select, and choose a bitrate that the connection can sustain steadily. The recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate; do not carry the H.264 values over as if they were universal for HEVC or AV1.
Make a long-running broadcast more dependable
Test the actual loop and sources
Run the planned video, audio and OBS scene together before the broadcast. Inspect YouTube’s preview, listen to the audio and watch stream health. A test on a different scene or at a lower output mode does not establish that the final configuration will hold.

Keep an eye on the live feed
Monitor the Live Control Room and OBS while the broadcast is running. A stream that starts successfully can still encounter connection or encoding problems later. OBS recommends testing before relying on a stream, and YouTube advises checking stream health and quality during the event.
Account for the cost of keeping a PC running
The spare PC avoids the cost of buying a dedicated streaming computer, but a do-it-yourself setup still relies on that computer, its power and a stable internet connection being available for the broadcast. This approach does not remove those dependencies or promise uninterrupted uptime.

Troubleshoot by symptom
- Dropped frames or intermittent disconnections: OBS identifies these as signs that the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot sustain the set bitrate. Check YouTube stream health, confirm the upload capacity available during the stream, and lower the output bitrate or resolution if the connection cannot reliably carry the selected settings.
- Video or audio missing in the preview: Check that the intended sources are active in the OBS scene, that audio is routed to the stream, and that the Live Control Room preview shows the expected feed before going live.
- OBS connects but the stream does not behave as expected: Verify that OBS has the correct YouTube stream URL and key, and review auto-start and auto-stop settings against the way you start and stop the encoder.
- First-time setup is not ready: Confirm channel verification and live-streaming eligibility, and allow up to 24 hours for the first enablement to take effect.
- The broadcast stops after a power, software or network problem: A reconnect setting cannot guarantee recovery from every failure. Restore the affected dependency, check OBS and YouTube’s stream health, and test the recovered feed before treating it as stable again.
Copyright and reused video considerations
Technical ability to send a video as a live stream does not establish that you have permission to broadcast it or that it meets YouTube’s applicable rules. Before using a documentary, music, archival footage or other third-party material, verify that you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s current policies for the content and monetization outcome you want. A continuous loop is not, by itself, evidence of permission or originality. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
