To run a continuous YouTube stream from a rented Indian VPS, put your video or playlist on a server you control, run a continuously supervised encoder or relay, and send one stream to YouTube Live over RTMPS. The VPS must have enough outbound transfer and a stable route to YouTube; an advertised port speed alone does not establish that. You remain responsible for the video and audio rights and for checking that your material is suitable for continuous streaming.
How the VPS-to-YouTube workflow works
The basic path is video file or playlist → encoder/relay on the VPS → YouTube Live ingest. YouTube converts the incoming live feed into multiple viewing formats, so the usual workflow is to send one appropriately configured ingest rather than make separate versions for viewers.
A relay forwards or remuxes an already encoded source. Encoding or transcoding changes the video into a chosen output format and uses more compute. Decide which job you need before choosing a server: CPU and memory needs depend on the actual process, and there is no documented universal minimum VPS configuration for one continuous stream.
Configure YouTube ingest securely
Choose RTMPS and protect the stream key
YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS tunnels RTMP through SSL; the connection needs an rtmps URL, a valid YouTube ingest endpoint and application path, and port 443. Use the current stream URL and key shown in YouTube Live Control Room, or returned by the relevant API workflow. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.

Set video encoding to match your target
YouTube Help lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options. Its published encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec. For H.264, YouTube lists 1080p30 at a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended, and 720p30 at a 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. These are YouTube’s published settings, not a guarantee that a VPS network can sustain the feed. Consult the current YouTube live encoder settings for other profiles and any changes.
Use a resolution and frame rate the source and server workflow can actually deliver. If the VPS only relays a pre-encoded file, avoid adding an unnecessary real-time transcode. If you do transcode, test CPU and memory with the exact output profile under sustained load.

Choose an Indian VPS by its operating limits
Compare the whole service, not just the monthly price or the port-speed headline. A 1 Gbps port is an advertised ceiling, not a promise of uninterrupted delivery to YouTube, a monthly transfer allowance, or proof of real-world ingest stability.
- Outbound transfer: distinguish a monthly TB allowance from “unmetered” wording, fair-use terms, port speed, overage charges, and any limits on sustained media egress.
- Network quality: consider route stability to YouTube’s ingest, packet loss, and whether the provider supports sustained outbound streaming traffic.
- Compute: match CPU and RAM to relay/remux versus encoding/transcoding. Provider claims about a maximum resolution do not establish capacity for every workload.
- Storage: allow for source media, logs, and working files. A playlist of large recordings may require substantially more space than a single short source.
- Operations and terms: check root access, operating-system choices, restart controls, support hours, backups or monitoring, fair-use rules, renewal rates, taxes, and cancellation terms.

Estimate transfer before committing
Estimate traffic from the stream’s actual bitrate and intended duration, then add room for audio, protocol overhead, reconnects, and any additional destinations. Confirm how the VPS provider defines and bills outbound traffic; no universal monthly transfer minimum is established for a stream without its bitrate and operating pattern.
For a rough baseline, bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8 gives megabytes before overhead. For example, a 5 Mbps video-only stream sends about 2.25 GB per hour by that arithmetic (5 × 3,600 ÷ 8,000), before audio and overhead. Multiply by the hours you plan to run and compare with the provider’s included transfer. Use your own configured bitrate rather than treating this example as a service requirement.

Deploy, test, and keep the stream supervised
Exact commands and service-manager configuration depend on your operating system and the encoder or relay you choose; the cited sources do not establish one universal VPS command or tested configuration. Whatever software you use, make the process persist across a terminal disconnect and configure an OS-appropriate supervisor or restart policy only after confirming how it behaves on your chosen system.
- Prepare the source and rights: put the recording or playlist where the VPS process can read it. Confirm you have permission to stream the video and audio continuously; do not assume that owning a copy grants streaming rights.
- Set the output profile: choose the codec, resolution, frame rate, CBR bitrate, and 2-second keyframe interval appropriate to the source and YouTube’s current guidance.
- Connect to YouTube: enter the current RTMPS ingest URL and private stream key in the encoder or relay. Do not place the key in public commands, screenshots, or logs that other users can access.
- Run a representative test: test with realistic movement and audio before relying on the stream. Check both the VPS process and YouTube’s stream health and messages; YouTube recommends testing and monitoring during the broadcast.
- Plan recovery: decide how you will detect a stopped process or lost ingest, restart it safely, and receive an alert. Test the chosen supervisor and alert path rather than assuming a restart policy or provider control panel is configured correctly.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
- YouTube does not receive a feed: verify the RTMPS protocol, current ingest URL and application path, stream key, and port 443 connectivity. Regenerate or replace a key only through the appropriate YouTube controls if you believe it was exposed.
- Stream health reports instability: check the actual outgoing bitrate, packet loss and route stability, and whether the VPS is reaching its transfer or fair-use limits. A high advertised port speed does not rule out any of these problems.
- Video stutters or the process falls behind: check CPU and memory use. A relay and a real-time transcode have different compute demands; reduce unnecessary transcoding or choose a workload-matched server after measuring the actual process.
- The feed stops after a disconnect or reboot: inspect the process supervisor, restart policy, and logs, then verify recovery with a test. A continuous-stream setup needs process monitoring as well as an active YouTube ingest.
- Transfer charges or service restrictions appear: compare usage with the plan’s included traffic and fair-use terms, and confirm whether the provider bills port speed, traffic, or sustained use separately.
