An old PC can run a looping playlist in OBS Studio, but that does not mean it can decode the video, render a 4K60 scene, encode it, and upload continuously. Check the files, the computer’s hardware and a sustained upload test before committing to a 24/7 broadcast. If the machine cannot keep up, a cloud loop is an alternative that does not depend on your PC staying on.
What has to work for 4K60
A continuous broadcast has several separate workloads. OBS must read and decode each source file, compose the scene, encode frames at the chosen resolution and frame rate, and send the resulting stream to YouTube. The playlist’s loop setting handles only playback order; it does not prove the PC can handle the rest.
- Source decoding: The graphics hardware must support decoding the playlist’s codec if you want hardware decoding to help. An unsupported format can leave the CPU doing the work.
- Encoding: A compatible hardware encoder can move encoding work off the CPU, but does not remove the decoding, rendering or upload demands.
- Network: The connection needs stable upload capacity for the selected bitrate, with headroom for fluctuations and other household or office traffic.
- Long-run reliability: Heat, dropped frames, encoder overload, power interruptions and network drops matter more in an unattended stream than in a short test.
Because the PC model, source codec and connection are unknown, no particular hardware configuration can be prescribed in advance.
Set up the playlist in OBS
1. Check your files and install the VLC dependency
Inspect the resolution, frame rate and codec of the videos you intend to loop. OBS’s VLC video source requires VLC to be installed. Whether hardware decoding is useful depends on whether your GPU supports the source format. See the OBS Media Sources documentation.

2. Add and loop the playlist
- In OBS, add a VLC Video Source to the scene.
- Add the video files you want in the playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist so the source starts again after the files finish.
- Enable Use hardware decoding when available only as an option to test; it helps only when supported by the GPU and media format.
- Check the OBS preview for the intended crop, aspect ratio, image and audio before going live.
Looping is a source setting, not a guarantee that OBS can process every playlist item at 4K60.
3. Choose an encoder the PC can sustain
In OBS output settings, choose a hardware encoder if the installed GPU or CPU exposes a compatible option. OBS explains that hardware encoders generally move encoding work from the CPU to a specialized GPU component; the available choices depend on the hardware and software. This does not guarantee smooth playback or encoding if decoding, composition or the PC’s overall workload is the bottleneck. See OBS Hardware Encoding.

4. Match the YouTube ingest settings to the codec
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest, constant bitrate (CBR), up to 60fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its published recommended ingest rates are:

These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer playback quality or an India-specific ISP threshold. Keep the H.264 and AV1/H.265 figures distinct: the 4K60 recommendation is 50 Mbps for H.264 and 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265. YouTube advises running a speed test to test upload bitrate and monitoring stream health. Use a test stream before relying on the setup. Use YouTube Studio’s stream key and ingest details for the broadcast, keeping the key private. OBS menu labels can vary by version; use the current YouTube stream setup and the matching RTMPS server/key in the streaming settings. Do not share the key publicly or put it in screenshots.
Test before leaving it on
A brief successful broadcast is not proof that an old PC can run continuously. Start with representative playlist material—especially clips with motion and audio similar to the real program—and watch both OBS and YouTube’s stream-health indicators during a longer trial.

- Watch for OBS dropped or lagged frames and encoder overload.
- Check whether audio remains in sync and the playlist advances and loops as intended.
- Observe temperatures and stability over time; a machine that overheats or throttles may work briefly and fail later.
- Measure upload rather than download speed. The available guidance does not establish a single India-specific upload threshold beyond YouTube’s codec- and resolution-specific recommendations.
- Test under the network conditions expected during the real broadcast, including concurrent use that may reduce available upload.
Copyright and YouTube live rules
Before streaming a playlist, confirm that you have the rights to every video, music track and other element. A technically stable stream can still be interrupted or restricted for rights or policy reasons. A continuous prerecorded loop is not, by itself, evidence that the channel complies with YouTube rules or qualifies for monetization. Review current YouTube policies and the channel’s own obligations before broadcasting; do not assume that permission to upload a recording automatically covers retransmitting it as a live stream.

Self-managed server or PC
A VPS or a spare computer can also host a continuous process, but the available evidence does not establish a provider or plan that will reliably deliver 4K60 upload from India. A self-managed route means you must choose and maintain the machine, ensure its sustained upload and encoding capacity, and recover it when processes or connectivity fail. Compare those ongoing costs and responsibilities with a hosted loop before choosing.

If you need a lower load to diagnose the machine, test a lower resolution or frame rate first. The YouTube recommendations above show the corresponding ingest figures; changing output settings does not fix rights issues or unstable power/network conditions.
