Yes. An AWS EC2 instance can run an encoder that sends a continuous video feed to YouTube Live: the instance reads a video file or live production source, then publishes it to the event using YouTube’s stream URL and key. EC2 does not bypass YouTube’s channel eligibility, format, or content rules. For a prerecorded loop, the basic path is: enable live streaming on your channel, create a YouTube event, launch and secure an EC2 instance, configure an encoder, test the feed, and monitor it continuously.
What you need before setting up EC2
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so confirm eligibility before configuring the server. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
Decide whether you are looping prerecorded material or transmitting a genuinely live camera, screen, or program feed. A prerecorded loop reads media from a file or reachable source; a live production feed must capture an ongoing source. If your media is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts, the EC2 workload differs from one that must encode or transcode video. There is no universally correct EC2 size: the choice depends on the source, encoding work, memory, network capacity, storage, and AWS Region.
Create the YouTube live event and get its credentials
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream for the intended broadcast.
- Open the event’s stream settings and copy its stream URL and stream key. Use the credentials associated with the event you intend to broadcast.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL when your encoder supports it. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL; YouTube explains how to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in its RTMPS guidance.
- Keep the key private. It functions as a publishing credential: do not put it in a public script, screenshot, source repository, or log. Restrict access to the operator and streaming process. If it is exposed, rotate it in YouTube and update the encoder.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering the event URL and key, then checking the preview before going live.

Choose and launch an EC2 instance
AWS instance types determine available CPU, memory, storage, and networking capacity. Encoding is typically more demanding than forwarding a compatible, already-encoded feed, but the reviewed guidance establishes no minimum instance size or performance benchmark for either workload. Start with a configuration matched to the actual source and encoder, then run a sustained test and watch resource use and stream health before relying on it continuously.
In the EC2 launch workflow, choose an AMI/operating system, instance type, storage, key pair, network, and security group. AWS’s EC2 launch and connect tutorial explains the launch process; its example is not a video-encoding sizing recommendation.

Secure access and media storage
- Use an EBS-backed root volume if the instance may need stop/start lifecycle operations.
- For remote administration, limit SSH access to a trusted administrator IP range, or use AWS Systems Manager Session Manager where appropriate. Avoid globally open SSH or RDP.
- Keep only necessary inbound access. The encoder sends its stream outbound, so ensure the instance has outbound connectivity to YouTube’s ingest endpoint.
- Place media somewhere the streaming process can read reliably, and ensure available storage is sufficient for the files and any separate recording you plan to keep.
AWS describes security groups as instance-level firewalls and notes that new security groups allow outbound traffic by default. See EC2 security groups.
Configure the encoder for YouTube
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1; audio AAC or MP3; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection to its servers. Check its encoder settings and bitrate recommendations when selecting the specific output format.

Bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec; it is not one universal setting. As YouTube Help’s 2026 guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, representative H.264 recommendations are 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Other combinations have different recommendations. Choose the row for your actual output, then confirm the EC2 network path and encoder can sustain it.
Set the event’s URL and key in the encoder, select compatible video and audio output, and configure CBR and the keyframe interval. The right exact command or UI settings depend on the source format, loop behavior, audio track, installed encoder build, and how that encoder expects the URL and key. Validate the particular configuration rather than treating a generic command as a tested recipe.

Test, preview, and start the broadcast
- Run a short unlisted test using representative content, including typical motion and audio.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming feed and preview.
- Check picture, sound, aspect ratio, motion, and continuity. Review Live Control Room stream-health messages and correct format or network problems before the public broadcast.
- For a scheduled event, start the encoder ahead of time so there is time to inspect the preview. Use the event’s settings to choose the intended visibility and start behavior.
- Monitor the feed during operation. YouTube recommends checking encoder setup ahead of an event and monitoring stream health.
Use the YouTube encoder guide alongside the event’s Live Control Room health indicators.

A continuous broadcast needs operational safeguards beyond starting the encoder. Monitor for a stopped process, network failure, full disk, replaced or expired key, and degraded stream health. Configure a suitable operating-system service manager or process supervisor to restart the encoder when appropriate, and test that recovery behavior; no particular supervisor configuration is established here.

YouTube event settings include stream-key reuse, latency, DVR, and auto-start/auto-stop options. Check them for the intended workflow. Reusing a key can simplify encoder setup, but verify that the selected event and key are correct. Keep a separate recording if you need a complete copy: YouTube Help states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, which is not a guarantee of one complete archive for a 24/7 broadcast. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and YouTube live streaming settings.
Understand the EC2 costs
A continuously running instance makes compute a central cost, while storage is billed separately. The actual total depends on Region, instance type, storage, network transfer, and any additional services. Use the AWS Pricing Calculator with your intended configuration and review billing after a sustained test; there is no meaningful fixed monthly quote without those details.
AWS says stopping an instance ends instance usage charges, but EBS storage charges continue. Stopping and restarting can also assign a new public IPv4 address, so check whether your configuration depends on an address that may change. See Stop and start an EC2 instance.
Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No event or stream key is available | Channel eligibility and the intended event’s stream settings. | Confirm live streaming is enabled, then create or select the correct event and copy its URL and key. See YouTube eligibility guidance and event setup. |
| Connection or TLS error | Whether the URL is the RTMPS endpoint and the encoder supports RTMPS. | Use the matching ingest URL and protocol; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room if needed. See YouTube RTMPS guidance. |
| YouTube reports an incorrect stream format | Video and audio codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, and output settings. | Match YouTube’s supported formats and encoder requirements. See encoder settings and YouTube live-streaming errors. |
| Poor picture quality or dropped frames | Whether the selected bitrate fits the resolution, frame rate, and codec; sustained outbound capacity; and Live Control Room health messages. | Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the chosen output and check instance/network performance under sustained load. |
| Encoder does not restart after an instance reboot | EC2 lifecycle, operating-system service configuration, and whether the media and credentials remain available. | Configure the encoder to start as intended and test restart behavior; verify event credentials and endpoint after recovery. |
| The broadcast has no complete YouTube archive | Whether the stream lasted beyond the documented under-12-hour automatic-archive scope. | Record independently when a complete copy matters and confirm current YouTube behavior for long broadcasts. See YouTube’s archive guidance. |
