To run a 24/7 YouTube stream with OBS, keep the computer, encoder, internet connection and modem/router running continuously, and choose a bitrate your connection can sustain—not one based on its advertised download speed. For a straightforward H.264 setup, YouTube recommends 3 Mbps for 720p30 or 5 Mbps for 1080p30, with CBR and a two-second keyframe interval. Test the stream at the hours you plan to run it, watch YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s network statistics, and plan for power and internet outages: OBS alone cannot prevent either.

What a 24/7 OBS stream requires

OBS encodes and sends video from your computer to YouTube. For the stream to stay live, the computer must keep encoding, the connection to YouTube’s ingest server must remain stable, and the computer and network equipment must stay powered. A plan’s headline download speed—or a single successful speed test—does not establish that these conditions will hold around the clock.

Before choosing settings, check your broadband provider’s stated typical upload speed and fair-use policy (FUP). TRAI does not prescribe a minimum download or upload speed for broadband; it says providers must state typical speeds and FUP terms. See the TRAI broadband FAQ, last updated October 1, 2026. TRAI also points subscribers to its MySpeed app and portal for speed checks.

Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain

Use the upload connection on the computer that will run OBS. Test during the hours the stream will operate, ideally with ordinary household devices also using the network. Favor stable upload capacity and leave headroom rather than matching the stream bitrate to the best result from a speed test.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends these H.264 video bitrates; they are starting points, not guarantees that a particular connection will maintain a stream:

Resolution and frame rate YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate When to consider it
720p30 3 Mbps A sensible lower-bitrate trial when upload varies or reliability matters more than fine detail.
1080p30 5 Mbps Consider when stable upload has room above the video bitrate and the added detail matters.
720p60 8 Mbps For content that benefits from 60 fps, provided the connection can sustain the higher bitrate.
1080p60 6 Mbps For 60 fps at 1080p; test carefully, as the required stable upload still depends on the full stream and connection conditions.

These are video bitrate recommendations from YouTube’s encoder settings guidance, checked in 2026. The table does not include a promise about total required upload capacity or your route to YouTube. Choose a profile based on stable performance, desired detail and frame rate. In particular, 720p30 is a reasonable reliability-first trial against 1080p30 when the connection has limited or variable upload.

Configure OBS for YouTube

For a simple H.264 workflow, set the encoder to CBR and use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube says the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Its current guidance also supports H.265/HEVC and AV1; consult YouTube’s codec-specific tables if you choose either, because recommended bitrates depend on codec, resolution and frame rate.

  1. Select the streaming destination and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect your account or enter a stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it or share it. If you think it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
  2. Set output encoding. Open Settings > Output and use the streaming encoder’s H.264 option where available. Set rate control to CBR and choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate you selected, using YouTube’s recommendations as a starting point.
  3. Set video dimensions and frame rate. In Settings > Video, select the output resolution and frame rate for the stream. Match them to the profile you intend to test; do not select a higher resolution or frame rate merely because the computer can encode it.
  4. Set the keyframe interval. In the encoder’s streaming settings, set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum guidance.
  5. Confirm the protocol. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS for live encoder ingest. Use the service and ingest options presented for your YouTube stream rather than substituting an unrelated destination URL.

OBS labels can vary by version, operating system and encoder. If a setting is unavailable in your selected encoder, check that encoder’s options and YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming an equivalent setting is active.

Use Ethernet and check the broadband plan

Connect the streaming computer to the router by Ethernet if practical. OBS Project’s connection troubleshooting guide, published September 30, 2024, says, “WiFi may be unstable for streaming,” and recommends a wired connection. Ethernet removes Wi-Fi as one possible source of instability; it does not fix a weak route to YouTube or an ISP outage. If problems persist, inspect the cable, router/modem, network drivers, VPN or security software, and possible route congestion. OBS’s guidance is at Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Compare broadband plans using the provider’s declared typical upload speed, FUP threshold, post-FUP speed and availability at your address. “Unlimited” does not necessarily mean that speed remains unchanged after a fair-use threshold. TRAI says providers must state the relevant terms. As one provider-specific example, Airtel’s broadband terms describe a 3333 GB billing-cycle FUP example followed by speed reduction to 1 Mbps, and note that FUP terms may be amended and availability depends on network feasibility at the address. Check the exact current terms for your own plan; this example is not a general Indian broadband rule.

Test the stream before leaving it live

  1. Run a realistic test. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended broadcast. Let it run long enough to encounter ordinary connection fluctuations, and test again during the hours the stream will actually be on.
  2. Watch YouTube Live Control Room. Check stream-health notices while OBS is sending. YouTube’s live stream health reference, last updated September 14, 2026 UTC, includes configuration issues such as high or low bitrate, unsupported codec, a keyframe interval that is too long, and “video ingestion starved.”
  3. Check OBS network statistics. Look for network-dropped frames or disconnects. OBS defines dropped frames as an unstable connection to the remote server or an inability to sustain the selected bitrate. A speed test can look adequate while the route to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable.
  4. Confirm audio and the intended content. Listen for audio problems and verify that the video and any music or other material are appropriate to broadcast. A technical test does not establish that you have rights to the content or that a stream complies with YouTube policies.

Plan for power and internet interruptions

A computer running OBS needs continuous power, as do the modem and router. A UPS may bridge some short power interruptions, but the needed capacity and runtime depend on the equipment connected and the battery. It cannot maintain a broadcast through an ISP outage, a local fiber fault or a wider network interruption. Neither a UPS nor a successful test guarantees uninterrupted 24/7 transmission.

If the power or internet fails, OBS cannot send video until the affected equipment or connection recovers. After restoring service, check OBS and YouTube Live Control Room to confirm whether the stream has resumed; if it has not, reconnect or start the broadcast again and verify its health. For longer-term resilience, identify who will notice an outage and be able to restore the setup.

Troubleshoot dropped frames and stream-health warnings

  • OBS reports network-dropped frames or disconnects: reduce the bitrate and retest. Try a different ingest server if one is available. OBS notes that network problems are typically outside OBS itself.
  • The connection is on Wi-Fi: test with Ethernet. If drops continue, check cabling, router/modem status, network drivers and VPN or security software.
  • YouTube says incoming video is insufficient or unhealthy: read the specific stream-health message. Check that bitrate suits the selected profile, the codec is supported and the keyframe interval is two seconds (and no more than four). The YouTube API health reference lists issues including bitrate, codec, keyframe and ingestion-starvation problems.
  • A speed test is good but the live stream still drops: the test does not prove a continuous, stable route to YouTube’s ingest server. Retest at the intended streaming hours, lower the bitrate and check OBS and YouTube diagnostics before deciding where the fault lies.
  • Settings appear correct but interruptions continue: note the time and exact health messages, inspect modem/router status and cables, and contact your ISP with those details. OBS identifies congestion and ISP-side changes as possible causes.

When diagnosing a bitrate problem, OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed. Treat that as a troubleshooting rule of thumb, not proof that a connection can sustain the bitrate all day; a speed result and conditions can vary. Follow the symptoms and retest rather than raising the bitrate to match a single peak measurement.

Or let it run in the cloud

If keeping a computer and home connection running is the part you want to avoid, StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
