Create a plain-text FFmpeg concat file that lists your local video clips in order, then have FFmpeg read it and send the output to YouTube Live. The playlist file contains media paths—not your YouTube stream key. This guide covers the local concat workflow, compatibility checks, the YouTube connection, and when a cloud service is a better fit for continuous playback.
Create the FFmpeg concat playlist
Save a text file in the directory containing your media. For example, name it playlist.ffconcat and use this format:
ffconcat version 1.0
file 'clip-01.mp4'
file 'clip-02.mp4'
file 'clip-03.mp4'
The first line must be exactly ffconcat version 1.0, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, for FFmpeg to auto-detect the format. Add one file line for each input; the demuxer reads them in that order. Paths may be relative to the playlist file or absolute. Follow FFmpeg’s quoting and escaping rules for spaces and special characters, and carefully test paths containing apostrophes or other troublesome characters. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check the file before streaming
- Confirm the header is the first bytes in the file and has no hidden byte-order mark.
- Check spelling, capitalization, and path for every listed file.
- Keep the playlist limited to trusted paths. If your command uses
-safe 0, FFmpeg relaxes path safety checks; do not use that option with an untrusted playlist. - Check the local build’s supported options with
ffmpeg -h demuxer=concat.
Check whether the clips can be concatenated directly
The concat demuxer joins packet streams and adjusts timestamps so each file follows the preceding file’s duration. Direct concatenation is most suitable when the clips have compatible stream structures, codecs, time bases, and related parameters. Sharing an .mp4 extension is not enough to establish compatibility. FFmpeg’s documentation also notes that duration estimates can affect timestamps: inaccurate durations may introduce gaps or artifacts. If you know a reliable duration, a duration directive can override the stored value.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Situation | Workflow to consider | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Inputs have compatible streams and you want to avoid re-encoding | Concat demuxer | Depends on compatible stream parameters and reliable durations. |
| Inputs are incompatible, or you need to normalize their output | Re-encode with a filter-based workflow, such as the concat filter where appropriate | Requires encoding rather than packet-level joining. |
FFmpeg’s concatenation FAQ distinguishes the demuxer from the filter on this basis. Inspect the actual streams and test the complete sequence before relying on it for a live broadcast.
Send the playlist output to YouTube Live
A general command pattern is ffmpeg -re -f concat -safe 0 -i playlist.ffconcat ..., followed by the encoding, muxing, and RTMP output settings appropriate to your FFmpeg build and the stream configuration. This is illustrative, not a tested, copy-and-run command: the correct codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and output URL depend on your setup. Check your installed FFmpeg help and YouTube’s current encoder guidance before streaming.

- Open YouTube Live Control Room. Create or open the live stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key. Use these values in the encoder’s private output configuration, not in the concat playlist.
- Start the FFmpeg encoder. Monitor its output for input, timestamp, encoding, and connection errors.
- Check the Live Control Room preview. For a scheduled stream, review the preview and click Go live when ready.
- Keep the key private. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, playlist, or log. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s controls before using it again.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance describes the server URL and key workflow. It also says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; platform policies can change, so check the current Help page when planning an archive or a longer broadcast.
Looping and keeping the broadcast running
The example playlist lists each clip once. To repeat playback indefinitely, a common FFmpeg approach is to loop the concat input, for example by adding -stream_loop -1 before the input option. Verify that your installed FFmpeg supports the option and test the resulting timestamps and transitions with your files. A successful local loop does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted YouTube connection: monitor the encoder and Live Control Room, and plan for what happens if the process or connection stops.

Do not confuse a concat file with an HLS playlist
An FFmpeg concat file is a local text script that names media files for the concat demuxer. YouTube HLS ingestion is a different network protocol with its own segment and playlist requirements. YouTube’s HLS setup guidance specifies TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. Those HLS requirements do not apply to the local concat file in this tutorial.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg does not recognize the concat format | The header is misspelled, has leading whitespace, or has a byte-order mark. | Make ffconcat version 1.0 the exact first line and save the file without a byte-order mark. |
| A file cannot be opened | A path is wrong, relative to an unexpected directory, or incorrectly quoted/escaped. | Verify each path and test special characters using FFmpeg’s documented syntax. Check the current working directory if using relative paths. |
| Clips fail to join cleanly or show gaps | Stream structures, codecs, time bases, or durations differ. | Inspect the inputs. Use the demuxer only for suitable streams; consider a filter-based re-encoding workflow for incompatible media. Verify any duration override against a reliable duration. |
| FFmpeg rejects a path as unsafe | The concat demuxer’s safety checks reject the path format. | Prefer simple trusted relative paths. Only relax checks with -safe 0 when every playlist entry is trusted. |
| YouTube does not receive the encoder output | The output configuration may use the wrong server URL or key, or the connection may have failed. | Compare the private encoder settings with the values in Live Control Room and inspect FFmpeg’s connection output. Keep the key out of public logs and files. |
