You can run a YouTube stream from an EC2 instance without a GPU by encoding in software on the CPU. The practical challenge is keeping that CPU workload and the instance’s outbound network capacity reliable over time. Choose an instance for sustained performance, test it with your actual source and output settings, and verify YouTube’s current live-stream requirements before configuring an encoder.
What a GPU-free EC2 stream involves
An EC2 machine can run a streaming process that reads a prerecorded loop or another source, encodes it on the CPU, and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. A GPU is not inherently necessary for software encoding. AWS documentation about DCV describes software encoding when a server has no GPU, but that is related evidence—not a guarantee that a particular FFmpeg workload will meet your desired quality or frame rate. Plan around the workload you will actually run: source format, output resolution and frame rate, codec, encoder preset, and whether the stream is a simple video loop or generated content. There is no substantiated universal EC2 instance size for this job; test candidates with the real workload rather than treating a generic instance recommendation as a benchmark.
Choose an instance for sustained CPU and network capacity
CPU performance
AWS recommends fixed-performance EC2 instances when an application needs consistent high CPU performance and identifies video encoding as an example. Burstable T instances use CPU credits, so their behavior under a brief test may not represent a continuous encoding workload. - Match the instance architecture to the operating system and encoder packages you plan to use.
- Run your intended source and output settings for an extended test period; watch CPU utilization, frame delivery, and whether the process falls behind.
- If CPU stays saturated or frames are dropped, reduce the encoding workload or test an instance with more suitable sustained CPU capacity.
Outbound network performance
EC2 network performance depends on instance type. AWS describes baseline and burst behavior for some types, so an “up to” bandwidth figure should not be treated as guaranteed sustained throughput. Compare the instance’s network characteristics with the configured stream bitrate, allowing headroom for protocol overhead and recovery. AWS EC2 network bandwidth
Estimate the continuous upload requirement from the intended output bitrate, then test connectivity and watch for interruptions during sustained operation. A process can encode successfully and still fail to deliver reliably if network capacity or connectivity is inadequate.

Prepare YouTube settings before writing an encoder command
The AWS material cited here does not establish YouTube’s current ingest endpoint, recommended bitrate, codec profile, keyframe interval, stream-key procedure, or any policy limits affecting uninterrupted broadcasts. Confirm those details in current official YouTube Live documentation before choosing FFmpeg flags or publishing a command. Do not copy an FFmpeg example for AWS IVS and treat its endpoint or settings as YouTube requirements: IVS is a different service. AWS IVS streaming configuration
Once you have verified YouTube’s current requirements, configure the source, output format, encoder settings, and ingest destination accordingly. Keep the stream key secret: do not put it in public source code, shell history, or logs. Restrict access to wherever it is stored, and rotate it if it is exposed.

Deploy and operate the stream process
- Decide what plays. Identify whether the stream is a prerecorded documentary loop, generated content, or another source. Confirm that you have the rights to broadcast all video, audio, and other included material.
- Build a test on EC2. Install an encoder compatible with the instance architecture and configure it against YouTube’s verified requirements. Start with the actual source and intended output rather than a synthetic workload.
- Measure sustained behavior. Observe CPU use, dropped frames, encoder progress, network connectivity, and whether the process remains current with the source. Adjust the instance or workload if performance is inadequate.
- Run it under a supervisor. Use a process supervisor or operating-system service manager to restart the encoder after a process failure. Configure useful logs and health checks, and alert on process exit, sustained CPU saturation, and lost connectivity.
- Protect credentials and validate recovery. Keep the stream key out of code and logs, and test what happens when the encoder exits or the network connection drops. Confirm that your recovery procedure reconnects successfully instead of assuming a restart alone restores the YouTube broadcast.
These operating steps are implementation guidance, not requirements asserted by AWS or YouTube. Continuous service also depends on monitoring and responding to failures; a running instance by itself does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Common problems and how to respond
- CPU remains saturated or frames drop: the selected instance or encoding settings may not sustain the chosen output. Re-test with a more suitable fixed-performance instance or reduce the workload, then monitor again under sustained conditions.
- The stream starts but later becomes unstable: check CPU-credit behavior if using a burstable instance, and review network interruptions and sustained bandwidth rather than relying on short startup tests.
- The encoder is running but YouTube does not receive a valid feed: re-check the current YouTube ingest details, stream key, and encoder requirements. Do not substitute IVS settings.
- The process exits and stays down: inspect service-manager status and logs, then verify that the supervisor is configured to restart the correct command and that credentials are available securely to the service.
- The stream key appears in logs or code: remove the exposure, restrict access, and rotate the key through YouTube’s current stream settings.
