First calculate the stream’s monthly data use, then check whether the VPS plan includes enough outbound transfer, can sustain the required workload, and stays within budget after tax and overages. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, even 720p30 uses about 2.592 TB of video payload over a 30-day month, before audio and protocol overhead.
Work out the bandwidth before choosing a VPS
For an always-on stream, outbound transfer is often the budget constraint people miss. The monthly figures below are calculations from YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates, assuming an uninterrupted 30-day stream. They exclude audio, protocol overhead, and any differences in how a provider accounts for transfer.

The calculation is bitrate × time ÷ 8 bits per byte. Actual transfer will be higher once audio and protocol overhead are included. A transfer quota measured in GiB is also not the same unit as decimal TB, so compare units carefully rather than assuming the numbers match.
Why a cheap VPS may not meet the budget
DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing table lists examples of $4/month with 500 GiB transfer, $12/month with 2,000 GiB, and $18/month with 3,000 GiB (DigitalOcean pricing; accessed 2026). These are USD examples, not an India checkout quote, and they do not establish that any tier suits a particular stream. The 500 GiB example is far below the calculated 30-day payload for either of the two formats above. Even the larger examples need to be checked against audio, overhead, billing units, and the selected stream settings.

Do not treat a listed monthly price as an all-in cost. At checkout, verify region availability, taxes, currency conversion, renewal price, transfer overage charges, and whether the transfer allowance applies to outbound traffic in the way your workflow needs. An allowance or price can change; confirm current terms with the provider before committing.
Choose a workload the VPS can actually handle
Relaying compatible, pre-encoded video
If the source file is already encoded in a format and settings YouTube accepts, a relay or stream-copy workflow can avoid real-time video encoding. That reduces the VPS’s processing burden, but it does not reduce the outbound data required by the bitrate. Confirm that the file’s video, audio, container, and stream parameters are compatible with your chosen workflow and YouTube ingest.
Encoding or transcoding on the VPS
If the VPS must encode a live scene or transcode the video in real time, sustained CPU performance becomes a major unknown. A plan’s advertised virtual CPU count alone does not prove it can encode continuously at your chosen resolution and frame rate. Benchmark on the actual plan with representative material, monitor CPU use and dropped frames, and leave headroom for the operating system and recovery tasks. No specific VPS performance or 24/7 result is established here.

Before paying, record the answers to these checks for the exact plan and billing region you intend to use:

- Outbound transfer: What is the monthly allowance, what unit does the provider use, and what happens when you exceed it?
- All-in price: What are the tax, currency conversion, renewal price, and any storage or transfer charges?
- Workload: Will the server relay compatible pre-encoded video, or must it encode or transcode? If the latter, test sustained performance on the exact plan.
- Recovery and administration: How will you detect a stopped process or dropped connection, restart it, and learn that it failed?
- Billing unit: Is the displayed amount monthly, promotional, or tied to a longer commitment? Check the provider’s current terms at checkout.
If the plan’s transfer quota cannot cover the calculated payload with room for overhead, lowering the VM price does not fix the shortfall. Lowering the bitrate can reduce transfer use, but must still produce a stream quality suitable for your material and the platform’s recommendations.
Set the stream to YouTube’s published requirements
YouTube’s live encoder settings guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), AAC or MP3 audio, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP.

For H.264, the guide’s recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. It also lists 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. Choose settings that match the source and your transfer budget; do not assume that selecting a resolution alone guarantees the stream’s actual bitrate.
Test and monitor before relying on a 24/7 stream
- Configure YouTube Live and obtain the stream key. Keep the key private; anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Use YouTube’s current Live Control Room interface and follow its prompts for the event or stream.
- Configure the VPS streaming process. Use a supported ingest protocol and encoder settings, including CBR and a two-second keyframe interval where applicable. If relaying a file, verify its media parameters instead of assuming they match the intended output.
- Run a representative test. YouTube advises testing before starting the live stream, with audio and movement similar to the intended content. Check both the video and audio and allow the platform’s stream-health indicators to identify issues.
- Monitor the stream and the server. Review YouTube’s stream-health messages, and watch the VPS process, CPU, network use, and transfer consumption. Ensure someone or an alerting process can respond if the stream stops; a server running unattended is not the same as a monitored service.
- Recheck after changes. A different source file, bitrate, resolution, or encoding workflow can change CPU load and bandwidth. Test again before treating the new setup as dependable.
Copyright and channel-policy checks for documentary streams
Being able to send video to YouTube does not establish that you have the rights to stream it. Before looping a documentary, verify that you own or have permission for the footage, soundtrack, photographs, narration, and any third-party material. A VPS does not change the rights or permissions attached to the content.
Also consider how repeated or reused material fits YouTube’s channel policies and monetization rules. Technical continuity is not a guarantee of policy compliance, monetization eligibility, or continued availability of a stream. Review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before making an always-on stream part of a publishing plan.
