How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream from a Cloud Server with Limited Bandwidth

A practical guide to looping authorized video from a cloud VM to YouTube with FFmpeg, including bitrate choices, transfer estimates, setup, and troubleshooting.

Run FFmpeg on an always-on cloud VM, send one continuous RTMPS stream to YouTube, and set the video bitrate below the VM’s reliably sustained upload capacity. For a prerecorded documentary loop, keep the authorized video on the VM and use FFmpeg to read it in real time and repeat it. Then test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and monitor it: a continuous broadcast also needs reliable transfer capacity, process supervision, and a plan for recovery.

What you need to keep running

A cloud-based 24/7 stream has three jobs: provide a source, encode or pass it through as a live output, and deliver that output continuously to YouTube. For a prerecorded loop, the VM must be able to read the file for the full run. For a camera or another live source, that source must remain available to the encoder. Use only media you have permission to broadcast.

The VM needs enough compute for the chosen encoding settings and a network connection that can sustain the outgoing bitrate, with headroom for variation and audio and protocol overhead. YouTube’s transcoding creates playback formats for viewers; it does not reduce the bandwidth needed to upload the incoming stream.

Choose stream settings that fit the connection

YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends these H.264 bitrates. They are recommendations for encoder settings, not a guarantee of what a VM network can sustain or what quality viewers will receive.

Resolution and frame rate Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
360p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 3 Mbps
480p at 30 fps 0.4 Mbps 4 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

YouTube publishes separate bitrate guidance for AV1 and H.265/HEVC. Use the recommendations for the codec you actually send, rather than applying the H.264 figures to another codec. If your connection is constrained, lower resolution or frame rate deliberately, and test using representative scenes: fast motion and detailed images can expose problems that a static screen does not.

Use YouTube’s encoder basics

  • Prefer constant bitrate (CBR), as YouTube recommends.
  • Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Use AAC or MP3 audio and RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure extension to RTMP (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).
  • Do not set the encoder at the nominal limit of the VM’s line. Leave room for network fluctuations and audio and protocol overhead.

Estimate the transfer before choosing a VM

A continuous stream sends data every hour it runs. For a rough decimal estimate, multiply the encoded bitrate in Mbps by 10.8 to estimate gigabytes per day, before protocol overhead or rate variation.

Encoded bitrate Approximate transfer per day Approximate transfer over 30 days
3 Mbps 32.4 GB 972 GB
6 Mbps 64.8 GB 1,944 GB

These are arithmetic planning estimates, not provider billing figures. Before committing to a VM, check whether its provider counts outbound traffic to YouTube, the included transfer allowance, the cost or behavior after that allowance, and any sustained-network policy. Also confirm that the VM can encode your selected resolution and frame rate. Total cost can include VM runtime, storage, outbound transfer, and monitoring; provider prices and allowances vary and must be checked directly.

Set up YouTube and the cloud VM

  1. Prepare the source. Upload an authorized video to a location the VM can read, or configure a continuously available real-time source. For a loop, check that the file’s audio and video durations work together at the loop point.
  2. Create the VM and install FFmpeg. Choose a host and instance capable of the selected encoding workload and sustained outbound traffic. Install FFmpeg using the operating system’s package manager or the project’s installation guidance. The exact steps depend on the provider, operating system, and FFmpeg build.
  3. Configure a YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and retrieve its current ingestion endpoint and stream key. Keep the key private: do not put it in a public repository, share it in a support post, or expose it in logs or shell history. Use the current values displayed for your channel.
  4. Prepare persistent operation. Arrange process supervision, restart behavior, logs, health checks, and alerts for the VM environment you chose. YouTube’s encoder guidance does not configure these host-level operations for you; test the restart and alert path in your deployment.

Loop a prerecorded file with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -re for reading an input at its native rate, which is useful when pacing a file as a live stream. Its documentation also covers RTMP and RTMPS protocols. The following is an illustrative command shape, not a tested production command. Replace the endpoint and key with the current YouTube Live Control Room values, and adapt settings to the input, target resolution and frame rate, and installed FFmpeg build.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-video.mp4
  -c:v libx264 -b:v 3M -maxrate 3M -bufsize 6M
  -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
  -f flv 'rtmps://<youtube-ingest-endpoint>/<stream-key>'

In this example, 3M is an illustrative video bitrate, not a setting that suits every resolution, frame rate, or network. With a 30 fps output, a GOP of 60 frames corresponds to a two-second keyframe interval; if the output frame rate differs, adjust -g accordingly. Set output resolution, frame rate, pixel format, and audio handling explicitly where the source and YouTube settings require it.

The example uses a video file as its input. If audio ends earlier than video, or the input has unusual stream layouts or durations, validate the loop rather than assuming every file repeats seamlessly. A short private or unlisted test can reveal black frames, missing audio, a failed connection, or an unsuitable bitrate before a public broadcast. AWS’s documented looping example demonstrates the FFmpeg pattern but targets AWS IVS; it is not a ready-made YouTube command (AWS: Step 4: Set Up Streaming Software).

Start the broadcast and monitor it

  1. Start FFmpeg under the process supervisor configured for the VM, rather than relying on an interactive terminal session to remain open.
  2. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s ingest preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm that video and audio are present and that the incoming stream uses the intended settings.
  3. Watch the VM’s CPU use, outbound traffic, FFmpeg logs, and supervisor status. Test that the configured restart and alert mechanisms behave as intended.
  4. Track actual transfer against the provider’s billing and allowance rules. Recheck those rules when they change or when you change the bitrate or run duration.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks and fixes
YouTube does not receive the stream Confirm that the endpoint and key are the current values from the channel’s Live Control Room, that RTMPS is configured correctly, and that the VM can make outbound connections. Keep the key secret; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update the encoder.
Stream health degrades or the broadcast disconnects Check whether the configured bitrate exceeds reliable outbound capacity, and reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if needed. Leave network headroom; inspect VM networking and FFmpeg logs for interruptions. Confirm the supervisor’s restart behavior rather than assuming YouTube will recover a failed host process.
Video is choppy or the VM is overloaded Check CPU use and the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Choose a less demanding configuration or a VM capable of the workload, then repeat a representative test.
Viewers report no audio or a bad loop transition Inspect the input’s audio stream and duration, verify the chosen audio codec and bitrate, and test the file at its loop boundary. Input layouts differ, so validate the exact media rather than relying on a generic loop command.
Transfer charges or allowance use are higher than expected Compare measured outbound use with the bitrate-based estimate, accounting for overhead and rate variation. Check the provider’s current outbound accounting, included allowance, and overage terms.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a managed alternative to maintaining an FFmpeg VM, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube from its cloud service: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot regardless of quality, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required.

StreamNeo is for YouTube streams of uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; only the duration changes. See StreamNeo for plan details. Monthly plan: $9.99 per month. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
