To keep a Raspberry Pi stream online through a power cut, back up every local device the stream needs: the Pi and its power supply, plus any router, modem or optical network terminal (ONT) that loses power. A Pi-only battery will not help if the broadband connection goes down. Even a fully backed-up home setup still depends on the ISP and upstream network staying available.
What must stay powered
Map the complete path from video file to YouTube: the Raspberry Pi running FFmpeg, its power supply, and the network equipment carrying the upload. Depending on your connection, that may include a router, modem and fibre ONT. If any required device loses power, the stream can fail even while the Pi remains on.
- Raspberry Pi: Use a backup supply that matches the exact model and can deliver the required voltage and current under load.
- Router, modem and ONT: Include each device that would otherwise shut down during an outage. Check each unit’s input requirements and whether the UPS output is compatible.
- Internet service: Local backup power cannot prevent an ISP-side outage or upstream network failure.
Choose backup power for your Pi and network equipment
Confirm the Pi model and supply requirements
Raspberry Pi Ltd.’s current documentation recommends a 5 V, 5 A supply for Raspberry Pi 5; using a 3 A supply limits current available to peripherals. For Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, the recommended supply is 5 V, 3 A. Pi 3 and earlier models have different connectors and requirements, so check the documentation for your specific board before choosing a UPS or battery. These are recommended supply modes, not measurements of the board’s typical consumption or estimates of runtime. See Raspberry Pi power-supply documentation.
Do not assume that a generic USB battery port will deliver the required voltage and current at the board. Cable voltage drop, adapters and connected peripherals can affect what reaches the Pi. Confirm the UPS output, connector and supported load, and test the complete setup with the peripherals you actually use.

Back up the broadband path too
If the router, modem or ONT loses mains power during an outage, it needs backup power as well. A Raspberry Pi UPS HAT may protect the board, but it does not automatically power a separate router, modem or ONT. A UPS for the whole Pi-and-network setup is often the more direct way to address a household power cut; check that its outlets and output suit every connected device.
Estimate capacity, then test the runtime
First identify the combined load of the devices that must remain on and decide how long you want the setup to bridge an outage. UPS capacity in VA is a sizing specification, not a promise of a particular number of hours. Actual runtime depends on the battery and UPS, conversion losses, battery condition and connected load. No fixed runtime can be given without those details, and no India-specific Pi-and-network runtime figure is established here.

Use the manufacturer’s runtime information only when it applies to a comparable load, then run a controlled test of your assembled setup. Record how long it operates on battery and whether the Pi, network equipment and stream remain healthy. Check battery condition periodically; an ageing battery may no longer provide the runtime you measured when it was new.
Set FFmpeg and YouTube up for the available connection
Choose a stream quality your upload can sustain
Backup power keeps equipment running; it does not increase upload capacity. Measure the available upload under realistic conditions, then choose a conservative resolution and bitrate that the connection can sustain. YouTube recommends selecting a reliable stream quality, testing with audio and motion similar to the actual content, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. Test the actual FFmpeg input and output before relying on the setup. Use representative footage and audio, and check the incoming stream’s health in YouTube Live Control Room. A stream that starts successfully is not proof that it will remain stable under your normal upload conditions.
Distinguish process restart from stream recovery
FFmpeg supports RTMP and RTMPS, and its protocol documentation describes RTMP as a streaming protocol over TCP/IP. Some reconnect controls documented for FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol apply to HTTP; they are not a blanket guarantee that a YouTube RTMP publishing session will resume after a network interruption. A service supervisor can relaunch FFmpeg if the process exits, but restarting the process is not the same as confirming that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream again. After a restart, verify the incoming stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Test the full recovery path—including the Pi, network devices and YouTube ingest—with a brief, controlled interruption before depending on it for a scheduled broadcast.

- Check the battery path: With the Pi and network equipment connected as planned, disconnect mains power briefly under controlled conditions. Confirm each device stays on and that the Pi receives stable power.
- Check the upload: Confirm the router or modem remains online and that the stream reaches YouTube. A running Pi alone does not prove the broadband path survived.
- Check FFmpeg recovery: If the process stops, confirm the supervisor relaunches it and that the input is available again.
- Check YouTube: Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify that the incoming stream is healthy. Do not treat a running FFmpeg process as proof of successful publishing.
- Repeat with the real configuration: Use the intended video, audio, resolution and bitrate, and monitor the stream for the duration you need to validate.
Common symptoms and likely fixes
