You can run a 24/7 YouTube stream from a cloud server on a limited monthly transfer allowance by sending one encoder stream to YouTube and choosing a bitrate that fits your cap. At a steady 1 Mbps, the server sends about 324 decimal GB in 30 days; at 4 Mbps, about 1,296 GB. These are planning estimates before protocol overhead and provider-specific accounting.
How much data does a 24/7 YouTube stream use?
For a continuously running stream over 30 days, estimate outgoing data with this formula:
Monthly decimal GB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × 324 × fraction of the month online
The calculation assumes a steady bitrate and 30 days (2,592,000 seconds). For example, if the stream runs 20 hours each day, multiply the 24/7 estimate by 20/24. The figures below are calculated estimates, not hosting-provider quotes.

| 10 Mbps | About 3,240 GB (3.2 TB) |
Allow extra room for protocol overhead, reconnects, telemetry and differences between decimal and binary units. Do not plan to use the entire advertised cap: check how your provider measures traffic, what counts toward the allowance, and what happens when you exceed it.
How the cloud server’s transfer is counted
In a normal encoder-to-YouTube workflow, the cloud server sends one contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube says it automatically transcodes live streams for viewers, so you do not multiply the encoder’s outgoing traffic by the number of viewers. Serving viewer copies from your own infrastructure or a separate CDN is a different design with separate delivery traffic and costs.

Transfer rules are provider-specific. AWS Lightsail, for example, counts both inbound and outbound traffic toward an instance’s allowance, but excess inbound traffic is not charged; excess outbound traffic can incur fees. Allowances vary by region and are aggregated under Lightsail’s rules. Verify the current terms for the region and instance you plan to use rather than applying this example to another host.
Choose a bitrate that fits the cap
Resolution and frame rate are practical quality controls: choose the lowest quality that suits the material and audience, then use its bitrate to estimate transfer. YouTube’s currently documented H.264 recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. Those continuous settings imply about 1,944 GB and 3,240 GB, respectively, over 30 days before overhead. Check YouTube’s current table for the resolution, frame rate and codec you intend to use; recommended values can change.

If the cap is tight, lowering bitrate is the direct way to reduce encoder traffic. That also reduces the data sent to YouTube and may affect picture quality, particularly with fast motion or detailed footage. Test with audio and motion similar to your actual program before committing to a setting.
Set up the YouTube stream and cloud encoder
- Confirm live access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. In YouTube Studio, create or select a stream and copy its server URL and stream key into your encoder. Keep the key private. An unlisted test can help you check the preview before going public.
- Configure a supported contribution stream. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. Its encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265 or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a keyframe interval of two seconds (do not exceed four seconds). Supported audio codecs include AAC and MP3. Set the video bitrate to match the resolution and frame rate you selected, and confirm the current settings guidance for your codec.
- Test and watch stream health. Start the encoder, check YouTube’s preview and stream-health messages, and verify that sound and motion look right. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion to the intended stream. Monitor the server-side encoder process as well; arrange a suitable process monitor or service manager so a crash is visible and recoverable.
- Compare hosting plans against the actual workload. Check the monthly transfer allowance, whether ingress and egress count, overage treatment, region-specific limits, sustained upload reliability, and how you can monitor and restart the encoder. Confirm the selected plan’s current terms before relying on its headline transfer number.
A basic encoder contribution to YouTube does not require a full live-distribution stack such as AWS MediaLive, MediaPackage and CloudFront. Those services are designed to encode, package and distribute live video to viewers, a different and more extensive architecture.

Plan for long sessions and archives
A 24/7 broadcast does not necessarily become one complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If individual archives matter, plan session endings and restarts before that threshold, then test how your encoder and YouTube handle the transition. Keep a local recording as a backup and monitor both the live stream and the recording file.
The precise restart procedure depends on your encoder and workflow. Testing and monitoring improve visibility, but no specific watchdog product or uninterrupted uptime is guaranteed by YouTube’s guidance.

Troubleshoot transfer and continuity problems
- The data allowance is running out faster than expected: Check the encoder’s actual bitrate and how long it has been online. Recalculate with the formula above, then check whether the provider counts inbound traffic, uses binary units, aggregates allowances across instances, or applies a different billing period. Reduce bitrate if the planned transfer exceeds the safe budget.
- The stream looks poor after reducing bitrate: Check the resolution and frame rate as well as the bitrate. Test with representative motion and audio, inspect YouTube’s preview and health messages, and adjust to a setting that balances image needs against the cap.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Confirm the stream URL and key in the encoder, verify that the key has not been changed or mistyped, and check the YouTube preview and stream-health messages. Keep the key private; if it may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- The stream stops when the encoder crashes: Check the server process and logs, and configure a process monitor or service manager appropriate to your operating system and encoder to make failures visible and recoverable. Test recovery before leaving the stream unattended.
- A long broadcast has no complete archive: If the session exceeded 12 hours, YouTube warns that it may not be captured at all. For future archives, use planned sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording backup.
- The provider charges or limits traffic unexpectedly: Compare the invoice or usage display with that provider’s current allowance definitions, region rules and overage terms. Do not assume another provider uses Lightsail’s accounting rules.
