Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →You can loop authorized media with FFmpeg on Debian and send it to a YouTube Live event, but a looping command alone cannot guarantee a 24/7 broadcast. You also need an eligible YouTube channel, a protected stream key, output settings that match your media and upload connection, and a plan for failures.
What you need before you start
- A Debian computer or server that can run FFmpeg and sustain the work required by your chosen output settings. No minimum CPU or memory specification is established here; test your actual files and settings on the intended host.
- Media you have permission to stream, including music, recordings, and artwork. Secure the rights needed for your use; a license name by itself does not establish that YouTube use is cleared.
- A reliable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the total stream bitrate, plus headroom.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and an encoder event with its RTMPS ingest URL and stream key.
Make sure YouTube Live is ready
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take at least 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream, and note the RTMPS stream URL and the key associated with that event. The exact interface labels may change.
Treat the stream key like a password. Keep it out of shared shell history, public configuration files, screenshots, and logs. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder configuration. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL.
Install FFmpeg and inspect your media
Install FFmpeg from the Debian package repository for your selected Debian release. Confirm that the installed build runs, then inspect the file you intend to stream before choosing an encoding command. For example, ffprobe /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 can help identify the input’s audio and video streams, codecs, dimensions, and frame rate.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
The command must account for what the file actually contains. A file with no video, multiple audio tracks, or an unusual frame rate may need different stream mapping or filters. Processing load also varies: passing compatible streams through is different from decoding and fully re-encoding them. Do not assume a machine is sufficient without testing the intended output.
Choose output settings and upload capacity
YouTube’s current encoder guidance (accessed in 2026) lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Frame rates up to 60 fps are supported. For a straightforward SDR setup, H.264 video and AAC audio are common choices; select a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate.

| H.264 output example | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | YouTube encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026; recommendation, not a guarantee. |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps | YouTube encoder settings guidance, accessed 2026; recommendation, not a guarantee. |
These are examples, not universal settings. Use YouTube’s codec- and frame-rate-specific guidance for your selected output. Your sustained upload capacity should exceed the total stream bitrate by 20%, as YouTube recommends; count all feeds if you send more than one. YouTube Help says, “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Run the test under conditions representative of the broadcast, and verify the actual stream in Live Control Room.
Loop and pace a local media file
FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 repeats an input indefinitely. The -re option reads file input at its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. Both are input options, so put them before the corresponding -i.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/authorized-media.mp4 [output options] [RTMPS destination]
This is a schematic command, not a ready-to-run production command. The output options must specify the needed stream mapping, codecs, bitrate, keyframe interval, and any required filters. The RTMPS destination must be the URL and key for your YouTube event; do not publish a real key. Confirm the current FFmpeg option syntax for your installed build and configure credentials so they are not exposed in shell history or logs.
Looping one file is not the same as managing a scheduled playlist with smooth transitions. Check the end-to-start boundary for silence, black frames, abrupt audio changes, or other unwanted jumps. A file loop does not itself validate playlist behavior or guarantee gap-free joins.

Test the broadcast before relying on it
- Start with the intended input and output settings, using the event’s RTMPS URL and protected key.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, aspect ratio, and playback continuity. Review its stream-health indicators and messages.
- Measure sustained outbound bandwidth while the encoder is running and confirm that the connection has the recommended headroom above total stream bitrate.
- Let the input reach its loop boundary and confirm that the transition is acceptable. Check logs and verify that viewers can reach the event.
- Test recovery deliberately in a controlled trial: determine what happens after an FFmpeg process exit, host restart, network interruption, or ingest disconnect, and verify the event after reconnecting.
Plan for failures and archive limits
A process manager and restart policy can restart a failed local FFmpeg process, but that is only one part of recovery. It cannot by itself repair an expired or reset key, a failed host, lost network access, or a YouTube ingest problem. Plan separately for process recovery, host and network failures, logs, alerting, and post-reconnect validation. The cited guidance does not establish a particular systemd unit, recovery time, or end-to-end uptime figure; a loop command is not an uptime guarantee.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will become one complete archive. If an archive matters, plan around that limit rather than assuming an indefinite stream will be preserved as a single recording.

Choose where FFmpeg runs
A Debian computer at home gives you direct control of the host, but continuous operation depends on that computer, its power, and your network staying available. A VPS is a remote-hosting category for operators who prefer not to depend on a home machine; no particular provider or specification is established here. Either approach still requires you to configure, monitor, and recover the encoder and validate its output.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. There is no home computer, OBS, or home connection that needs to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay powered on at home; StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud.
- Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free, with no card required; one free day is available per account.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service and plan details, or start the free day.
