Yes, potentially: FFmpeg documents a slash-prefixed syntax for reading an option’s argument from a file. You can use that mechanism to avoid typing a stream key directly into a command, but first verify that your installed FFmpeg build accepts it for the exact RTMP or RTMPS option you use. Keep the file private, and remember that this protects against one exposure route—not every local one.
Why a stream key needs protection
YouTube treats a stream key like a password: together with the stream URL, it authorizes an encoder to send video to your live stream. Anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed using it. YouTube’s Manage live stream settings explains how to manage stream settings and reset a compromised key.
If you put the literal key in an interactive command, it may be saved in your shell history. It can also end up in a script, terminal capture, troubleshooting log, or a shared file. Avoid typing the real key into command text or pasting it into material you plan to share.
Use FFmpeg’s file-backed option argument cautiously
FFmpeg’s manual documents a slash-prefixed form that loads an option’s argument from a file. This offers a possible way to supply a credential without placing its literal value in the command. The manual documents the general mechanism; it does not establish that every FFmpeg version accepts it for every RTMP or RTMPS option.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check your local FFmpeg documentation. Confirm that your installed version supports the slash-prefixed file-argument syntax and that the specific credential-bearing option accepts it. Consult the manual or help for that installation; do not assume a recipe for another build applies.
- Test without a real credential. Before relying on the method, test the exact option and file handling with a disposable key or a non-sensitive test value where appropriate. Confirm that FFmpeg reads the file as intended and that your shell does not receive the secret in the command text.
- Protect the key file. Restrict access to the file using the controls available on your operating system. Keep it out of source control, shared directories, terminal output, logs, and backups or sync locations you do not intend to expose it to.
- Keep the stream URL and key distinct. Get the RTMP or RTMPS URL from YouTube Live Control Room and configure the key separately through your encoder. Do not mistake the endpoint for the credential.
- Check the whole launch path. If a wrapper, script, or application starts FFmpeg, review whether it logs the full argument list or exposes it to other local users. File indirection may keep the literal out of the command you typed, but it does not prove that every local observer or process-inspection tool cannot see the value.
Do not treat this as a universal FFmpeg command recipe: support depends on the installed build and the exact option. The practical security guidance about permissions and logs is separate from FFmpeg’s documentation of the file-argument feature.
RTMPS protects a different part of the connection
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection that provides encryption. FFmpeg likewise describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection. Use YouTube’s current Encrypt your stream using RTMPS guidance when choosing transport.

RTMPS encrypts stream traffic in transit between the encoder and YouTube. It does not remove a key from a command you typed, erase shell history, protect a local key file, or prevent logging by a wrapper. Local secret handling and network encryption address different risks.
Use current YouTube encoder settings
Choose the transport, codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, audio format, and bitrate for your intended stream using YouTube’s current live encoder settings. YouTube’s guidance includes supported codecs, frame rates up to 60 fps, a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a four-second maximum, AAC or MP3 audio, and bitrate ranges that vary by codec and resolution. Check the applicable row on the live page rather than copying a bitrate for a different format.

If the key may have been exposed
Do not keep using a key you believe was disclosed. YouTube says an owner or manager can reset it in Live Control Room. After resetting, replace the old value in your encoder configuration with the new key and verify that the stream connects.
