How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Playlist on Google Cloud Compute Engine

A Compute Engine VM can run playlist playback and send the feed to YouTube Live while your computer is off. Here’s how to set it up—and what you must test for reliable recovery.

You can use a Google Cloud Compute Engine Linux virtual machine (VM) to play a playlist and send its video feed to YouTube Live, even when your own computer is off. The VM runs the playback and encoding software; YouTube hosts the live broadcast. A startup script can launch software when the VM boots, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream. You must configure and test the encoder, reconnect behavior, monitoring, and recovery.

How the setup works

The path is: playlist files or another permitted video source → playback and encoding process on a Compute Engine VM → YouTube Live ingest → viewers. YouTube’s Live Control Room supplies the server URL and stream key that the encoder needs. You start the encoder, check the preview, and then confirm the broadcast in YouTube.

Compute Engine startup scripts run commands when a VM boots. On Linux, the script runs as root, and public Compute Engine images include the guest environment required to run metadata scripts. This automates startup; it does not establish that the playback process will restart after every failure or reconnect successfully to YouTube. Google Cloud: About startup scripts and Use startup scripts on Linux VMs.

Before you create the VM

Check the channel and video rights

Confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed to broadcast every item in the playlist. A playlist being available on YouTube does not itself establish permission to rebroadcast its contents. YouTube’s live-stream setup guidance covers creating a stream, but the sources cited here do not determine whether a particular playlist is licensed for continuous rebroadcast. Review the applicable rights and YouTube policies before going live.

Choose a workload and budget

Decide what resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and whether your chosen playback and encoding setup can handle that workload on the VM. There is no single machine size established for every playlist or encoding task. Estimate cost using the actual Google Cloud region, VM type, boot disk, network use, and expected runtime; no reliable universal price can be given without those choices.

Plan network access conservatively

For an encoder that only sends a feed to YouTube, avoid opening inbound firewall ports unless your management or monitoring design requires them. Google says default VPC firewall rules block incoming connections and allow outgoing connections. A VM having a public external IP does not mean every inbound connection is allowed. See Google Cloud’s VM networking overview and IP addresses.

Create and prepare the Compute Engine VM

  1. Select the project and region. In Google Cloud Console, select the intended project, then go to Compute Engine and create an instance. Choose a region suitable for your operating and network requirements. Follow Google’s current Create and start a Compute Engine instance instructions; labels and available machine options may change.
  2. Choose the machine and boot disk for the workload. Size the VM for the playback and encoding software, video format, and target output. Set a boot disk that can hold the operating system and required software. If you plan to keep media on the VM, account for that storage separately and verify disk capacity. The sources do not establish a universally appropriate machine type.
  3. Review networking. Permit outbound connections needed by your software and YouTube ingest. Do not create broad inbound firewall access simply because the VM is streaming. Add only the management or monitoring access your chosen design actually needs, and restrict it appropriately.
  4. Prepare startup automation. Use a Linux startup script to install and launch your selected playlist-capable player and encoder, or to start a separately maintained service. Startup scripts run as root; treat embedded credentials carefully and limit who can view or edit VM metadata. The documentation establishes startup-script behavior, not a validated encoder command, service unit, retry policy, or particular software package.
  5. Start the instance and verify the software locally. Confirm that the media source is accessible and that playback and encoding can run on the selected VM before connecting the process to a public broadcast. Validate the exact commands and configuration for your selected software; no specific FFmpeg command or deployment has been verified here.

Connect the encoder to YouTube Live

  1. Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing one. Use YouTube’s current instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the ingest details into the encoder. Use the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Configure the encoder to publish to YouTube’s recommended secure RTMPS ingest where available. The stream key authorizes the encoder to send the feed, so do not publish it in a script repository, log, screenshot, or public support post. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube’s live stream settings; see Manage live stream settings.
  3. Set the output to match the source and your available upload rate. YouTube’s published H.264 encoder recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are ingestion recommendations, not a promise about viewers’ playback quality. Choose a setting your VM’s connection can sustain reliably and consult YouTube’s current table for other formats: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
  4. Start the encoder and wait for the preview. Check that Live Control Room receives the feed and displays the expected video before selecting Go live. Starting the encoder sends the feed; it does not by itself mean the broadcast has been confirmed live to viewers.
  5. Monitor the stream health. Watch YouTube’s stream health indicators and confirm that audio, video, and the intended playlist are behaving as expected. Keep a way to reach the VM and its logs that does not require exposing unnecessary public ports.

Make it operationally resilient

A boot script handles VM startup, not every interruption. A production setup needs an explicit plan for a stalled player, encoder exit, VM reboot, loss of the YouTube connection, and recovery after an operator intervention. Choose and validate process supervision and reconnect behavior for your software; the cited Google and YouTube documentation does not prescribe a specific restart policy or prove uninterrupted service from a single VM.

  • Test reboot recovery: restart the VM deliberately during a safe test and verify that the playback/encoding process starts and reaches YouTube again.
  • Test process failure: verify what happens if the player or encoder exits. Do not assume a startup script will relaunch a process that fails after boot.
  • Watch both ends: use VM-level monitoring and YouTube Live Control Room stream health so you can distinguish a stopped encoder from an ingest or channel issue.
  • Protect the key: restrict access to metadata and logs, and reset the stream key if compromised.
  • Plan archive expectations: YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” That statement does not establish that a longer continuous stream will be archived in full. If an archive matters, confirm the current behavior in Live Control Room and arrange a separate recording plan rather than relying on an assumption. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
No preview appears in Live Control Room Encoder is not sending, or the server URL or stream key is incorrect. Check the encoder output and logs, then compare its ingest URL and key with the current values in Live Control Room. Keep the key private.
Preview appears, but the broadcast is not live to viewers The encoder feed has arrived, but the broadcast has not been confirmed live. Verify the preview and stream health, then use Go live in Live Control Room when ready.
Stream stops after a VM reboot The boot automation did not launch the playback/encoding process successfully. Inspect startup-script logs and software configuration, then test the boot sequence after correcting it. Startup scripts run on boot; post-boot process recovery requires a separately validated design.
Stream drops and does not return The encoder or network path may not reconnect automatically. Check VM and encoder logs and YouTube stream health. Configure and test the reconnect or restart behavior supported by your chosen implementation.
Inbound management connection fails Default VPC ingress is blocked unless an applicable rule allows it. Use the management method in your design and add only narrowly scoped inbound access if required; a public IP alone does not open ports.
Archive is missing or incomplete The duration may exceed YouTube’s stated automatic-archive threshold. Do not infer full archival for a 24-hour feed from YouTube’s statement covering streams under 12 hours. Check the current Live Control Room behavior and maintain a separate recording if needed.

Cloud VM versus a managed cloud service

Compute Engine gives you control over the VM and the software stack, but you are responsible for sizing, configuration, process supervision, monitoring, and recovery testing. If you would rather not maintain a VM and encoder, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only alternative for looping uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so your computer can be off; each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Learn more at StreamNeo.
