There is no proven universal best Compute Engine machine type for a 24/7 YouTube stream. If your VM only relays an already encoded feed, a small E2 general-purpose instance is a reasonable starting point to test—not a guaranteed minimum. If the VM continuously encodes or transcodes video, compare C-series performance types and N2D instead. Choose based on what the VM actually does, then measure CPU, memory, network needs, and total cost.
First identify what the VM does to the video
“Streaming” can describe two different workloads. A VM may simply relay an already encoded feed to YouTube, or it may do sustained video processing before sending the stream. Those tasks can require very different compute capacity.
- Relay only: The video is encoded elsewhere; the VM forwards the existing feed without encoding or transcoding it.
- Encode or transcode: The VM processes video continuously, for example by encoding a source or converting it to another format or output.
Google’s machine-family guidance places media streaming and transcoding among demanding workloads, but it does not benchmark a specific YouTube setup. Its guidance therefore supports comparing performance-oriented families for sustained video processing, not choosing a guaranteed machine size for your stream. Google Cloud’s machine-family documentation also notes that disk and network use are charged separately from machine pricing.
Compare machine families by workload
| Workload | Starting comparison | What the guidance supports | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Relay an already encoded feed without video processing | A small E2 general-purpose VM | E2 is positioned for lower-cost, modest workloads. Treating it as a relay starting point is an inference from that guidance, not a YouTube relay benchmark. Google Cloud machine-family guidance; Google Cloud machine-series comparison. | No exact relay benchmark or minimum machine type is established. |
| Continuously encode or transcode video | Compare C-series performance types and N2D | Google lists media streaming and transcoding among C-series workloads; a Google Cloud blog says N2D machine types are suitable for video streaming. These are vendor guidance, not workload-specific measurements. Google Cloud’s N2D overview. | The sources do not specify a winning size for your resolution, codec, frame rate, bitrate, or number of outputs. |
| Not sure whether general-purpose is enough | Begin by comparing general-purpose options, then measure | Google’s machine-series comparison advises starting with general-purpose when the appropriate family is unclear. Google Cloud machine-series comparison. | Resize after collecting utilization and reliability data; the guidance does not establish performance for your particular stream. |
How to choose and validate a size
- Define the processing path. Establish whether the VM relays an encoded feed or performs continuous encoding or transcoding. If it processes video, account for the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and number of outputs; these determine the workload, but the cited guidance does not provide a size for any particular combination.
- Choose a family to test. For a relay-only workload, use a small E2 as a measured hypothesis. For sustained software video processing, compare C-series options with N2D. If uncertain, start from a general-purpose family and gather real workload data.
- Check the actual configuration and region. Compare available machine sizes, memory, network throughput, and regional prices on Google Cloud’s VM instance pricing page. The page lists prices in USD by configuration and region; on-demand is the default consumption model described there.
- Run the real stream and observe it. Measure CPU and memory utilization, network use, and whether the machine maintains the required throughput with headroom. A sizing claim cannot be made from “24/7 YouTube stream” alone because no benchmark for this exact setup is established.
- Adjust based on evidence. If CPU is persistently constrained during encoding, compare a more suitable performance-oriented size or family. If the workload is only relaying, do not assume encoding-class capacity is necessary; confirm with measurements. Recheck network throughput and reliability after any change.
Machine-series network limits and rates vary. The sources do not establish a required outbound bitrate for this particular stream, so estimate traffic from your own stream settings and verify the chosen machine’s network capability rather than assuming a generic requirement.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Calculate the full 24/7 cost
A machine’s hourly compute price is not the whole bill. Google states that disk and network usage are charged separately from machine pricing. Include the intended region, disk configuration, expected egress, and any applicable discounts when estimating the cost of continuous operation. Google Cloud machine-family documentation
Use the live VM pricing page for your exact configuration and region; prices are region-dependent and can change. Google’s sustained-use documentation discusses discount eligibility and an Always Free quota equivalent to the monthly hours of one e2-micro VM. Confirm current program terms before counting on either benefit: Google Cloud sustained-use discounts. The available guidance does not establish that a particular stream qualifies for a discount or that the free quota covers its workload.

When a Compute Engine VM is not the right fit
If you need a YouTube channel to loop uploaded recordings around the clock, rather than operate your own VM and relay pipeline, StreamNeo is an alternative to try first: it runs the stream in the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers the first day free with no card. You upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video rather than broadcasting from a camera. See StreamNeo for details.
Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your video or playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. StreamNeo streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode and no quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
