This guide shows the setup and its limits. A running encoder is not a guarantee of uninterrupted delivery, and YouTube’s automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours—not necessarily one continuous 24-hour broadcast.
How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works
FFmpeg reads the playlist files stored on the VPS, encodes or passes through the media as configured, and sends the stream over the VPS’s outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Your own computer does not need to remain on, but the VPS, its network connection, the FFmpeg process, and YouTube’s receiving service all have to cooperate.
OVHcloud describes its VPS resources as shared physical host resources and makes the customer responsible for VPS administration. The title does not identify a particular VPS plan, region, or workload, so there is no single plan recommendation here. Check the current order details for CPU, memory, storage, outbound network capacity, and applicable terms before choosing a plan. OVHcloud’s terms also describe a possible bandwidth restriction to 1 Mbps in cases of excessive use; that is a contractual caveat, not a typical plan speed. Read the applicable OVHcloud terms before relying on a plan for continuous streaming.
Prepare and test the playlist files
Keep an explicit order
Put the videos in a known directory on the VPS and create a text list in the order you want them to play. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads entries sequentially and adjusts timestamps. Its documentation requires compatible streams, including matching codecs and time bases; duration errors can cause timing problems or artifacts. Mixed files should be normalized or tested before you depend on them for a long broadcast.

Use valid file paths; quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. This list illustrates sequencing files, not a complete, verified command for endlessly looping every possible playlist. The FFmpeg documentation describes looping image sequences with the image2 demuxer and sequencing media with concat, but those facts do not establish that an arbitrary mixed video playlist will loop seamlessly on every build. Check the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and test your exact FFmpeg build and media.
Check transitions before going live
- Confirm each file is readable by the FFmpeg build installed on the VPS.
- Check that streams are compatible across files, including codecs and time bases; normalize unlike media rather than assuming concat will join it cleanly.
- Review durations and test transitions for gaps, timestamp jumps, missing audio, or playback artifacts.
- Make sure the playlist files remain available at the paths referenced by the list while the process runs.
Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live, then create or schedule the stream.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The encoder needs both. YouTube Help calls stream keys “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret: do not expose it in public scripts, screenshots, shell history, or logs. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
- Use the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room if your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS and documents how to obtain the secure URL. Review YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
- If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder configuration. Do not assume changing a local file alone invalidates a compromised key.
Choose output settings for the source and VPS
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance rather than copying a bitrate from an unrelated resolution or frame rate. The table below reflects the recommendations stated in YouTube Help; the page does not state a publication year, so check it again when configuring a stream.

Check YouTube’s current bitrate and encoder settings before going live, since recommendations can change. YouTube also says total stream bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends 20% bandwidth headroom. For this setup, assess the VPS’s outbound capacity—not a speed test of your home connection—and account for the selected bitrate and any other traffic from the server. YouTube’s streaming tips explain its bandwidth guidance.
Start with a short test, then plan for failure
- Start with a short private or unlisted test rather than making the first run a 24/7 broadcast.
- Confirm that the Live Control Room preview shows moving video and expected audio, then inspect YouTube’s stream-health indicators.
- Check the FFmpeg output and logs for connection errors, timestamp warnings, or input-file failures.
- Decide how the process will be monitored and restarted after an FFmpeg exit or VPS reboot. Use a service manager appropriate to the operating system only after verifying the service configuration for that system; this guide does not provide a tested unit file or restart command.
- Define how you will be alerted if the stream stops. A process restart can address some local failures, but it cannot fix every network, host, key, or YouTube-side problem.
YouTube recommends testing before a broadcast and monitoring stream health. See the encoder setup and testing guidance. A continuous process and an uninterrupted stream are not the same thing: keep an operator able to investigate failures rather than treating automatic restart as a complete reliability plan.

Plan YouTube replay archiving separately
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise that one continuous 24-hour stream will be saved as a complete replay. If you need a replay, check the current Studio controls and choose an operational plan: schedule distinct sessions, accept that the long broadcast may not be archived as one complete video, or record a separate local master if you have the storage and the rights to do so. Check YouTube’s current live-stream archiving guidance before relying on a particular outcome.
Secure and maintain the OVHcloud VPS
A VPS requires ongoing administration. Keep the operating system updated, limit remote administration to necessary access, and configure a local firewall. Consider how you will restore playlist files and configuration if the VPS is lost or changed. OVHcloud describes snapshot and automated backup options, with availability depending on the VPS product. Confirm what is included for your specific service rather than assuming backups are enabled. Review OVHcloud’s VPS backup guidance.
