You can run a continuous drum and bass radio stream on YouTube with FFmpeg by feeding it a rights-cleared, repeating audio-and-video source and sending the output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. The encoder can run on a computer or server you control, but it needs supervision, logs and YouTube stream-health checks; an FFmpeg process that is still running does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
What you need before starting
Plan for four separate parts: music and visual assets you are entitled to use, a continuous source FFmpeg can read, a machine with a stable internet connection, and a YouTube Live broadcast configured for the encoder. Decide whether FFmpeg will copy an already compatible video file or encode a new video stream from audio and artwork. The right command and hardware depend on that choice.
- A source: one long-form media file or a playlist whose files FFmpeg can read continuously.
- A video stream: for example, a moving visual or a static cover image. Test it alongside the audio; do not assume an audio-only input will meet the video configuration you intend to send.
- A host: a computer, mini PC or rented server that can remain online. If FFmpeg must encode video in real time, confirm that the host can handle the selected resolution and frame rate.
- A YouTube Live stream key: create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio and keep the key private.
- A rights plan: clear the rights for each recording, composition and visual asset. A DJ mix or a track being available online does not establish that you may rebroadcast it.
Prepare a source that can play continuously
Use one prepared video file when reliability matters most
A long-form MP4 containing both the soundtrack and a visual is the simplest source to loop. Make sure it has the intended audio and video streams, plays correctly from beginning to end, and is encoded in a format that fits your output plan. If you use stream copy, the source must already meet the ingest requirements; copying avoids another encode, but it cannot repair incompatible codecs, frame rates or other stream properties.
Build a playlist for a changing radio rotation
For a playlist, FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can read a text manifest. A simple manifest named tracks.txt might look like this:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

file 'track-01.mp3'
file 'track-02.mp3'
file 'track-03.mp3'
Keep the manifest and tracks in the same directory when possible, use filenames that do not require special quoting, and make sure the files have compatible audio parameters. Concatenating files with different formats or inaccurate duration metadata can produce gaps, timing issues or playback failures. Test the playlist through several transitions before using it on air. If you need consistent loudness or seamless transitions, prepare and inspect the program audio before streaming rather than assuming a playlist will normalize or crossfade tracks automatically.
Choose the visual before you choose the command
YouTube expects the stream to match the configuration you intend to send. A static image can be looped as video while music plays; alternatively, use a visualizer or other moving artwork. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the final show. If you create a static-image video in FFmpeg, the image input must loop and be paced in real time; the audio input must also be read in real time so FFmpeg does not transmit the playlist faster than it plays.
Create the YouTube Live broadcast and protect the key
- Enable live streaming if needed. YouTube may require first-time live-streaming enablement time, so do not leave activation until the scheduled launch.
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream, select its visibility, and copy the ingest server URL and stream key shown for the encoder.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the ingest connection using TLS. Its API guide specifies port 443 for the RTMPS ingest URL.
- Keep the key out of public places. Do not put it in a published tutorial command, screenshot, repository, shared log or public configuration file. Restrict access to the machine and configuration that hold it.
- Preview and verify the incoming feed. For a scheduled workflow, check the preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go Live action when required. Confirm that both sound and picture arrive before promoting the stream.
An encoder start can create a watch page and take a stream live; scheduled workflows may instead present a preview that you then take live. Follow the controls displayed for the broadcast you created rather than assuming those two workflows behave identically.

Set FFmpeg output to match YouTube’s guidance
YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 frames per second, and constant bitrate (CBR). Its bitrate recommendations differ by codec, resolution and frame rate; choose the matching row in the current YouTube table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. For a concrete H.264 example, YouTube lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. The same table lists 6 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps, illustrating why settings should be selected by the actual format instead of by resolution intuition alone.
| Setting | Practical starting point | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Video codec | H.264 for a broadly usable FFmpeg workflow | YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1; confirm your FFmpeg build, encoder and chosen ingest setup support the codec you select. |
| Resolution and frame rate | Choose the output format your source and host can sustain; up to 60 fps is listed by YouTube. | Do not upscale a low-resolution source expecting it to gain detail. Match the stream configuration and test for frame-rate mismatch warnings. |
| Video rate control | CBR | For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s listed recommendation is 5 Mbps. Check the current encoder table for other combinations. |
| Keyframes | 2-second interval recommended | YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds. At 30 fps, a 2-second interval corresponds to 60 frames. |
| Stereo audio | AAC or MP3; 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps in YouTube’s advanced audio guidance | Confirm the outgoing stream really contains an audio stream and that it sounds clean in the Live Control Room. |
The exact video bitrate in the example below is tied to H.264 at 1080p30. Do not copy it unchanged if you alter codec, resolution or frame rate. Check the current YouTube encoder table for the chosen combination before launch.

Loop a prepared video file that already contains audio
Use stream copy only if the file’s codecs, resolution, frame rate and other stream properties already fit the YouTube ingest setup you selected:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "radio-program.mp4"
-c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"
This asks FFmpeg to read the file at playback speed and loop it indefinitely. It does not re-encode, change the bitrate or make an incompatible file compatible. If your Studio endpoint format presents the server URL and key as separate fields, combine them according to the endpoint instructions shown there; do not guess the path.
Loop a static cover image with a playlist and encode H.264/AAC
This template uses a looping image plus a playlist manifest. It sets 1080p30 H.264 to the specific 5 Mbps recommendation cited above, with a two-second GOP, and stereo AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps:

The libx264 encoder must be available in your FFmpeg build. The playlist must be readable by the concat demuxer and suitable for looping; inspect it for gaps and test it over multiple transitions. If you use another resolution, frame rate or codec, change the related settings and consult YouTube’s matching bitrate recommendation. FFmpeg option availability and behavior can vary by build and input format.
Verify the actual stream, not just the command
Run a private or unlisted test before announcing a public radio channel. Listen through the beginning, transitions and a longer stretch; check that the image is present and that sound is neither absent nor distorted. In Live Control Room, inspect stream health for warnings or errors. YouTube’s API health information includes issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch and missing audio, so a successful FFmpeg process exit status alone is not proof of a healthy broadcast.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep FFmpeg running and recover deliberately
A command started in an interactive terminal stops being a dependable station when the terminal session, host or network fails. On a computer or server you control, install FFmpeg as a service or run it under another process supervisor configured to launch at boot and restart after process failure. Preserve logs and configure notifications for restarts or prolonged failures. The precise service configuration depends on the operating system and host.

- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
- Test process recovery: deliberately stop FFmpeg and confirm the supervisor restarts it and records the event.
- Test network recovery: interrupt connectivity in a controlled test and observe whether FFmpeg reconnects and whether YouTube receives a healthy stream afterward.
- Check receiver-side health: monitor YouTube Live Control Room as well as the process. FFmpeg can remain alive while sending media YouTube considers unhealthy.
- Understand reconnect options: FFmpeg’s reconnect flags are protocol-specific, and options such as TCP keepalive for RTMP have particular semantics. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version and protocol in use. Reconnect options do not replace a supervisor or guarantee that YouTube resumes the broadcast as intended.
Choose a 24/7 broadcast plan separately from your archive plan
YouTube’s Live API guide describes a 24/7 live-feed pattern in which an ongoing broadcast can continue while a second broadcast is started against the same incoming stream. That does not mean a 24-hour broadcast will automatically become a set of daily recordings. YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Treat this as archive behavior for streams under 12 hours, not a promise of complete archive coverage for a longer stream.
Before launch, decide whether you need one ongoing viewer-facing broadcast, scheduled successive broadcasts, or API-based broadcast management. Test what viewers see during any handoff and what recordings are available afterward. If you need an archive, design and verify the broadcast workflow around the under-12-hour archive guidance rather than assuming a single day-long stream will be preserved in full.
Rights, monetization and channel policy
Obtain appropriate rights for every recording, composition and visual asset before broadcasting, and check YouTube’s current music and monetization rules for your channel’s location and use. A license for a recording may not establish rights to its underlying composition, and permissions can differ by territory or platform use. No blanket legal assurance can be made for drum and bass tracks, label catalogs or DJ mixes. Keep written records of permissions and review claims or restrictions in YouTube Studio. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist; it is a checklist, not a substitute for rights clearance or legal advice.
Cost and operating trade-offs
A self-hosted computer gives you control over the files and FFmpeg configuration, but the machine, network connection and recovery process are yours to maintain. A rented server moves the process off a home computer but still leaves you responsible for deployment, service supervision, monitoring and checking the provider’s sustained-streaming rules and bandwidth costs. An FFmpeg software encoder is flexible; a standalone hardware encoder is another category YouTube recognizes, but it does not remove the need for a prepared source, stream-key security or health monitoring. A specific host or computer should be selected only after you know whether real-time video encoding is required and what output format you plan to sustain.
