To migrate a continuous YouTube playlist stream, move the authorized media and encoder configuration to the replacement VPS, connect the encoder to the scheduled YouTube event using its server URL and stream key, then test the new feed before stopping the old one. The YouTube event and the encoder are separate: scheduling an event does not play your playlist or keep a stream running.
What moves—and what stays on YouTube
Your YouTube Live Control Room event is where you manage the public live stream and get its connection credentials. The VPS runs the encoder that reads your media and sends YouTube a continuing audio/video feed. You can usually reuse the scheduled event or create another one, but either way the new encoder must connect to it. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
This guide assumes you already have a working 24/7 playlist stream and are replacing its server. It does not prescribe a universal VPS size: the requirements depend on your files, output settings, and whether the new encoder must transcode.
1. Inventory the existing stream
Before changing anything, document what the current VPS does so the replacement reproduces the same schedule and output.

- List every video and audio file used by the playlist, along with the intended order and loop behavior.
- Record playlist or concat-list files, any separate audio/video inputs, and the paths the encoder expects.
- Save the encoder settings, including the output format and whether the stream is transcoded or passed through.
- Note the YouTube event, its scheduled details, and the service or startup mechanism that launches the encoder.
- Confirm that you have the rights needed to broadcast the media. A successful technical migration does not establish permission to stream it.
2. Prepare the replacement VPS
Transfer media and configuration
Install or verify the encoder you plan to use, then transfer the authorized media and playlist inputs. Update file paths wherever the new server’s directory structure differs. Check that the account running the encoder can read every media file and playlist file; correct ownership or permissions before starting the service.
A Linux FFmpeg setup may use local media files and a concat-demuxer list, with the process run under a dedicated service account. These are implementation choices, not requirements for every VPS. The example in the cooscreations 24/7 YouTube Stream setup and operations notes uses Ubuntu, FFmpeg, and systemd; adapt its paths and configuration rather than copying them blindly.

Check whether the VPS must encode
If the replacement encoder can send your existing files in a format YouTube accepts, it may be able to pass them through. If the files need conversion or different output settings, the VPS must sustain the resulting encoding workload. Consider the actual codecs, resolution, frame rate, storage needed for the media, and ongoing network use when choosing the host. The available migration guidance does not establish a universal CPU, memory, disk, or bandwidth minimum, so do not treat one server size as suitable for every playlist.
3. Connect the new encoder to YouTube
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or reuse the scheduled live event for the migration. Follow YouTube’s current encoder workflow for the selected event.
- Copy the event’s server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder configuration on the new VPS. The server URL tells the encoder where to send the feed; the key identifies the stream.
- Keep the key secret. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or ordinary log. Treat it like a password, and never use a literal example key from a guide.
- If the key was exposed, replace it. Use the key-management controls in Live Control Room, then update the secret in the new VPS configuration. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Scheduling or reusing the event does not start media playback. The encoder process on the VPS must be running and sending a valid feed for the event to receive video and audio.

4. Run the encoder as a supervised service
For a headless Linux VPS, run FFmpeg or another encoder through a service manager such as systemd. A service can start the process at boot and apply a restart policy if the process exits. Configure the service for the correct user, media paths, environment, logs, and restart behavior; test those details before relying on it unattended.
OBS is another option if you need a graphical interface or interactive scene control, but it may require a graphical VPS environment. Choose between a command-line playlist workflow and a graphical encoder based on how you manage media and scenes, how you want the process supervised, and whether the VPS can handle the selected encoding workload. The sources do not establish a universal reliability or cost winner between them.

5. Test the new feed, then cut over
- Start the encoder on the new VPS and confirm that it connects to the intended YouTube event.
- Check YouTube’s incoming stream status and inspect the video and audio. Confirm that the image, sound, and output settings are correct.
- Verify playlist order and looping, including transitions between files. Watch long enough to exercise the parts of the playlist that matter to your schedule.
- Check the encoder’s process status and logs as well as YouTube’s stream health. A process that is running does not, by itself, prove viewers are receiving good output.
- Once the new feed is validated, stop the old encoder so two hosts do not send competing feeds. Keep the old VPS available until the replacement has passed your checks.
This staged cutover is an operational safeguard: it lets you verify the replacement path before retiring the working one.
