The main catch is that YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive at all. If replays matter, schedule separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording as a backup.
What you need before starting
- A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. YouTube supports encoder-based livestreaming. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain the channel prerequisites.
- OBS Studio, which is free and open-source according to the OBS help portal.
- A rain-sound recording and visual that you created or have permission to use for livestreaming and, if relevant, commercial use.
- A reliable internet connection with enough measured upload capacity for your chosen resolution and bitrate.
Set up the stream in YouTube and OBS
- Prepare the channel. Verify that livestreaming is available for your channel and that it has no active live-streaming restrictions. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream and connecting an encoder.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Copy the server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not show it in a screenshot, recording, or public post. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Add your rain scene. In OBS, add an image or video source for a static or gently moving rain scene, then add your audio source. Check that the audio is audible and continuous in OBS’s mixer. Use only material whose rights permit your intended use; keep copies of licenses and permissions.
- Choose output settings to match your connection. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps or 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. For RTMP or RTMPS, it specifies CBR and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular connection in India can sustain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings guide.
- Test before going public. Measure upload speed at the location and time you plan to stream, and leave headroom rather than setting OBS to consume all available upload capacity. Preview the stream in Live Control Room; check picture, rain audio, continuity, and stream health. YouTube recommends a reliable network and monitoring stream health. - Start and verify. Start streaming from OBS first and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Then start the broadcast from the control room. Check the public watch page, audio, stream health, and any local recording.
Plan sessions around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local recording as a backup. That means a single continuous 24-hour broadcast cannot be relied on to create a complete YouTube replay. If you need a replay, divide the schedule into separate sessions shorter than 12 hours and record locally when your disk has enough space. A shorter session is not a guarantee that every archive will succeed. Read YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
YouTube’s explanation published August 12, 2026 says qualified watch hours can come from public long-form videos and archived livestreams; unarchived livestreams do not count. An always-on schedule should therefore account for archive retention as well as channel-specific YouTube Partner Program eligibility. Archived hours do not guarantee monetization or eligibility. Use rain audio and visuals you have rights to stream
Do not assume that a rain recording found online is free to reuse. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a match can interrupt or terminate a broadcast. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Use your own recordings or material with a license that covers livestreaming and your intended use, and retain the source, permission, and license records. Make the setup work from your location in India
YouTube’s published requirements do not specify a separate OBS configuration for India. Your actual upload performance depends on the location, provider, and network load, so test from the place where the computer will stream rather than relying on download speed or a national assumption. Shared household or office use can reduce available upload capacity.
A wired Ethernet link from the computer to the router can avoid some local Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot fix an unreliable ISP connection. A UPS may help through brief power interruptions if it is sized for the computer and router load; it is not a solution for a long outage. Choose equipment for your actual load and required runtime.

Troubleshoot common failures
- YouTube does not accept the stream: confirm livestreaming is enabled for the channel, copy the current server URL and stream key from Live Control Room, and check that neither has been mistyped. Keep the key private.
- The preview buffers or stream health degrades: reduce bitrate or resolution, recheck measured upload speed, and leave more network headroom. Check whether other devices or applications are using the connection.
- The stream stops when power or internet drops: OBS depends on the local computer, power, router, and connection remaining available. A UPS can cover only brief interruptions within its capacity; restore the connection and verify the preview before resuming.
- The livestream is interrupted by a copyright match: review the match and the rights for the audio or visuals. A license may not prevent interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID; contact the rights holder about allowlisting or replace the material.
- No complete replay appears: a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. For future sessions, plan broadcasts shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording if the archive matters.
