You can run a looping ocean-waves YouTube livestream from a low-power mini PC with OBS, provided the computer can decode your video, encode the chosen output continuously, and maintain a stable internet connection. Add your locally stored footage and audio as looping OBS media sources, connect OBS to YouTube with a private stream key, test the complete setup, and plan how you will detect failures and handle archives.

Before you start: check the channel and the media rights

  • Enable live streaming early. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until launch day. YouTube: Get started with live streaming.
  • Use footage and audio you are entitled to stream. Confirm that your rights cover continuous livestreaming, looping, monetization if you intend to monetize, and your intended geographic distribution. YouTube’s setup guidance says creators should respect audio and video rights: YouTube: Set up a live stream with an encoder. Keep a copy of the license or permission. The fact that a recording is labeled “ocean sounds” or is freely available does not by itself establish permission for a 24/7 broadcast.
  • Decide whether the mini PC is the right operating model. OBS on the mini PC gives you direct control, but the computer, OBS, and local internet connection must keep working. A cloud-hosted approach avoids leaving a computer running at home; an option is described after the DIY steps below.

There is no model-specific performance evidence here that can establish which mini PC will reliably run a particular scene. Evaluate the exact device, operating system, OBS version, media, output settings, and cooling under sustained load rather than relying on a generic “mini PC” label.

Prepare the mini PC and choose an encoder

The machine must decode the source video, composite the OBS scene, and encode the outgoing stream continuously. Hardware encoding can shift encoding work away from the CPU, but availability and output quality depend on the system’s hardware and operating system. OBS documents Intel Quick Sync support on Windows and Linux with compatible integrated graphics; it recommends Haswell-generation Intel Core processors or newer because earlier encoder generations can deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. These are OBS support notes, not a guarantee that a specific low-power computer will perform reliably. See OBS: Hardware Encoding.

In OBS, select a hardware encoder only if it is available on your system and produces acceptable results at your intended settings. If it is missing, check that the operating system and graphics drivers support it. If quality is poor or the system struggles, test a different supported encoder or reduce output resolution or frame rate. Do not assume that hardware encoding automatically means better quality; OBS notes that older encoder generations can be less efficient at a given bitrate.

Before relying on the setup, run the actual ocean scene for an extended test. Watch OBS’s encoding and rendering indicators, listen to the audio, and confirm the device does not overheat, throttle, or stop sending frames. No wattage, temperature, or expected service life can be inferred without testing the particular mini PC.

Build the looping ocean scene in OBS

  1. Create a scene. In OBS, add a new scene for the ocean stream.
  2. Add your local video. In the Sources panel, add a Media Source and select the ocean video file stored on the mini PC. Enable Loop so playback restarts when the file ends. OBS supports common video and audio formats; check the current list and source options in OBS: Media Sources.
  3. Set up audio once. If the ocean audio is embedded in the video, avoid adding a second copy of the same recording. If you use a separate audio file, add it as a media source and configure it to loop as needed.
  4. Check framing and levels. Confirm the picture fills the intended canvas without unintended black bars or cropping, and make sure the ocean sound is audible without clipping.
  5. Test the loop point. Let the file reach its end and restart. Look for a visible jump or black frame; listen for silence, a click, or an abrupt change in ambience. If the transition is distracting, edit the media or choose a better-matched loop before going live.

Test the same files and scene you plan to broadcast. A loop that looks seamless in an editing preview may still reveal a jump when played through the full OBS scene.

Configure YouTube and OBS for a stable stream

  1. Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s encoder workflow and choose the stream’s visibility and other settings there. Copy the server URL and stream key into OBS’s streaming configuration.
  2. Protect the stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as the password and address the encoder uses to send a feed. Treat the key as a credential: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast to the stream.
  3. Choose RTMPS where supported. YouTube recommends RTMPS for normal ingest; it encrypts the connection between the encoder and YouTube. Set the server URL and protocol according to YouTube Studio and your encoder. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
  4. Set output for the capacity you actually have. In OBS, set the output resolution and frame rate, then choose a bitrate that fits your sustained upload speed and YouTube’s current recommendations for that output. YouTube’s general encoder guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Consult YouTube’s current live encoder settings rather than treating any bitrate as right for every resolution or connection.
  5. Check audio encoding and levels. Use AAC or MP3 as recommended by YouTube, select an audio bitrate supported by the current YouTube guidance and your encoder, and confirm the audio meters move during playback.

YouTube also supports HLS ingest, but it has separate requirements: higher latency than RTMP, a rolling playlist, and transport-stream segments from one to four seconds. For a non-interactive ocean ambience stream, latency is usually less important than reliable delivery. Use HLS only if your encoder supports it and you have configured it to YouTube’s current HLS instructions: YouTube: Use HLS ingest.

Check upload capacity and test before going public

Measure sustained outbound upload under conditions similar to normal use; download speed alone does not tell you whether the stream will hold. YouTube recommends upload capacity at least 20% above the stream bitrate and warns that connection disruptions can break a stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

  • Allow extra capacity if household or office network use changes over time.
  • Test the exact resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, scene, and network you plan to use.

Start a private or unlisted test stream, inspect the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room, check that both audio and video arrive correctly, and monitor stream health before making a broadcast public. A successful short test is useful, but it does not prove that the computer or connection will run without interruption indefinitely.

Plan for failures, restarts, and YouTube archives

A 24/7 stream depends on a chain of components: the mini PC must stay powered and functional, OBS must keep sending valid media, and the network must remain available. Arrange a practical way to notice when the encoder or connection stops working, and decide who will respond. The available YouTube guidance warns that connection disruptions can break a stream; it does not establish that a local setup will automatically recover from every failure.

Do not assume that one uninterrupted 24-hour broadcast will produce a complete YouTube archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a replay matters, plan periodic restarts that keep broadcasts under that stated limit, or use a separate recording process and verify the resulting files. See YouTube: Archive live streams.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
Live streaming is not available in YouTube Studio The channel is not verified, has a live-streaming restriction, or first-time enablement is still processing. Check channel verification and restrictions; enable live streaming in advance because first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
The stream will not connect Incorrect server URL or stream key, or the selected ingest protocol is not configured correctly. Copy the current URL and key from YouTube Studio, confirm the OBS settings, and keep the key private.
Video or audio stutters, disconnects, or drops Upload capacity is too close to the bitrate, other network activity is consuming bandwidth, or the connection is unstable. Check sustained upload speed, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom above bitrate, reduce bitrate if needed, and test on a less congested connection.
CPU usage is high or the image quality is unexpectedly weak The system is encoding in software, the chosen hardware encoder is unavailable or unsuitable, or the settings exceed what the device can sustain. Confirm which encoder OBS is using and whether the hardware supports it. Test an available hardware encoder; lower resolution or frame rate if the device cannot sustain the workload.
The picture flashes, goes silent, or clicks when the video restarts The file’s end and beginning do not form a clean loop, or audio is duplicated or misaligned. Test the loop point, edit or replace the media, and ensure only the intended audio source is active.
The livestream is missing from the expected archive or is incomplete A continuous broadcast exceeded YouTube’s stated automatic archive window, or recording was not otherwise captured. Keep individual streams under 12 hours if relying on YouTube’s automatic archive, or record separately and verify the recording.
