Budget for more than the VPS rental: a 24/7 stream’s sustained bitrate can push outbound data beyond the plan allowance and add overage charges. DigitalOcean’s published examples start at $6 per month for a modest instance, but that plan includes only 1,000 GiB of transfer. At YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps for 720p30, one continuous stream sends about 1,944 decimal GB—roughly 1,810 GiB—in 30 days before overhead. Its $12 example includes 2,000 GiB, which may fit that workload but leaves little headroom. These are hosting examples, not tested minimums for encoding performance.
What does a 24/7 VPS stream actually cost?
The bill has a fixed infrastructure component and a usage-sensitive component. The VPS price covers a particular amount of compute, disk and outbound transfer; exceed the transfer allowance and the provider may charge extra. The cost also depends on whether the VPS encodes video or simply relays already encoded media. There is no established universal CPU or RAM minimum for every 24/7 stream.
DigitalOcean’s Basic Droplet pricing page, accessed October 3, 2026, lists these examples:
| Monthly price | Listed configuration | Included transfer | What to take from it |
|---|---|---|---|
| $4 | 1 vCPU, 512 MiB RAM, 10 GiB SSD | 500 GiB | Lowest listed example; the capacity is not evidence that it can encode your chosen stream. |
| $6 | 1 vCPU, 1 GiB RAM, 25 GiB SSD | 1,000 GiB | A low VM starting point, but not enough transfer for a continuous 6 Mbps stream if all stream traffic counts against the allowance. |
| $12 | 1 vCPU, 2 GiB RAM, 50 GiB SSD | 2,000 GiB | A plausible transfer fit for 6 Mbps with limited headroom; it does not cover a 10 Mbps stream’s estimated monthly traffic. |
These are listed plan examples, not a complete quote or performance recommendation. Taxes, region, optional backups, extra storage and transfer overage can change the bill. DigitalOcean lists weekly backups at 20% of the Droplet price. Confirm current prices and terms with the provider before choosing a plan. DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.

How much bandwidth does the stream use?
A steady stream sends data continuously, so bitrate is the main predictable driver of transfer volume. A useful decimal estimate is bitrate in Mbps Ă— 10.8 = GB per day; multiply the daily figure by the number of days in the billing period. Actual traffic can vary, and protocol overhead adds to the estimate.
| Constant bitrate | Approximate transfer per day | Approximate transfer per 30 days | Approximate GiB per 30 days |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 43.2 GB | 1,296 GB | About 1,207 GiB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB | 1,944 GB | About 1,810 GiB |
| 10 Mbps | 108 GB | 3,240 GB | About 3,017 GiB |
GiB estimates convert decimal GB by dividing by approximately 1.074. They are planning arithmetic, not provider billing guarantees; check the provider’s units and use measured traffic once the stream is running.
Relate the estimate to YouTube settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends H.264 and constant bitrate. Its representative recommendations include 6 Mbps for 720p30 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30; it also recommends 8 Mbps for 720p60 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60. The guidance gives ranges for some formats, including 3–8 Mbps for 720p30 and 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30. These are ingest settings, not VPS CPU-sizing recommendations. What the transfer allowance means for the bill
At 6 Mbps, the roughly 1,810 GiB estimate is above DigitalOcean’s 1,000 GiB example allowance and close to its 2,000 GiB example allowance. At 10 Mbps, the estimate of roughly 3,017 GiB is above 2,000 GiB. DigitalOcean says included transfer is pooled at team level, inbound Droplet transfer is free, and additional outbound transfer costs $0.01/GiB. Apply that rate to the measured excess, not an assumed universal total; details were last verified September 14, 2026. DigitalOcean transfer pricing documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteFor more than one stream, calculate each stream’s outbound traffic and account for the provider’s pooling rules. Do not assume a second stream is free simply because the VPS is already running.
Does encoding change the VPS price you need?
Yes, potentially. If FFmpeg or another encoder converts media on the VPS, CPU demand depends on the input, output codec, resolution, frame rate and encoding settings. A relay that forwards already encoded media may need less compute, but still sends the stream’s outbound data. YouTube’s bitrate table does not establish whether a particular VPS can encode reliably.

Choose a candidate configuration based on the actual workload, then run a sustained test at the intended resolution, frame rate and codec. Watch CPU and memory use, encoder errors, dropped frames and YouTube stream health. The $4, $6 and $12 examples above establish what DigitalOcean lists, not that a given plan can perform a particular encode for 24/7 operation.
What automatic restart monitoring needs to cover
Automatic restart is useful, but it covers only some failure modes. A process supervisor can start an encoder after a VPS reboot and restart it when the process exits. That does not prove the video reaching YouTube is healthy: a process may remain alive while sending a frozen image, invalid feed or otherwise unhealthy stream.
- Start and restart the process. Configure the operating system’s service manager or a container restart policy to launch the stream at boot and restart after process failure.
- Monitor the host and process. Check that the VPS is reachable and the encoder is running; alert on unexpected exits, repeated restarts or resource exhaustion.
- Check YouTube stream health. Monitor the YouTube live control room’s stream-health status and messages. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the broadcast.
- Test recovery and failure cases. Confirm that the service comes back after a process stop and a host reboot, and verify that an alert reaches someone who can act on it.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension to RTMP, for sending a feed to its ingest service. Keep the stream key private, use the correct key for the intended YouTube stream, and follow YouTube’s guidance for configuring and testing the encoder. A restart cannot fix a broken input file, exhausted transfer, invalid key, provider outage or YouTube ingest/platform issue.

Other VPS pricing examples and caveats
A Hetzner announcement dated June 6, 2024 listed the CX22 with 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 40 GB disk and 20 TB traffic at €3.79 per month excluding VAT. That is a historical announced price, not a current quote. Check current price, region, included transfer and tax before comparing it with current plans. Hetzner’s June 2024 pricing announcement.
When comparing VPS providers, compare the full monthly cost rather than the headline VM rate: included outbound data, overage rate, CPU and RAM, storage, region, backup charges, support and whether the workload encodes or relays. A provider’s listed configuration alone does not establish its suitability for a specific stream.
When a managed service may be simpler
A managed looping service can trade a service fee for less VPS administration. Check its current price, included transfer or quality limits, playlist handling, recovery behavior and support before comparing totals. A service fee and a VPS rental are not directly comparable unless you account for what each includes.

With StreamNeo, upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Each slot includes one always-on stream and 10 GB storage pooled across active slots. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not go live from a camera. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
Estimate your own monthly total
- Choose the stream’s actual bitrate. Use the encoder’s configured bitrate, not only the resolution label.
- Estimate monthly traffic. Multiply Mbps by 10.8 for approximate GB per day, then by the days in the billing period. Convert to GiB if the provider bills in GiB, and leave headroom for overhead and bitrate variation.
- Choose a VPS based on both compute and transfer. If encoding on the server, validate CPU and memory with a sustained test; if relaying, still budget for outbound traffic.
- Add usage and optional costs. Include any measured transfer above the allowance, applicable taxes, backups, extra storage and monitoring costs.
- Reconcile against actual usage. After launch, check provider traffic and YouTube stream health rather than assuming the estimate exactly matches the bill or broadcast.
For a starting estimate, use the upload-time calculator to plan media uploads, the cloud vs PC cost calculator to compare operating approaches, and the copyright safety checklist to review content before streaming.
