Before you start, clear the rights for every recording and underlying musical work, including any replay YouTube may keep. Then test the full setup while someone can monitor it: a PC, encoder, power supply, internet connection, or YouTube can interrupt a stream, so 24/7 operation is a goal, not a guarantee.
Choose how the stream will run

The rest of this guide walks through the PC-and-OBS method. YouTube Studio configures the live broadcast; it does not play your local music programme or replace the encoder.
Clear the music and visual rights before setup
Rights are the gating issue for a music stream. YouTube’s official livestream terms say: “You represent and warrant that You Have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Confirm permissions with the relevant rightsholders or licensing bodies for your specific use; a general licensing page or blanket statement does not establish that a particular catalogue or licence covers your broadcast.
Check both the sound recording and the underlying musical work. For each, establish that the permission covers YouTube livestream transmission, the territories where viewers may watch, the period of use, monetization if applicable, and an archived replay if one will be available. The Copyright Office’s statutory definitions provide legal context: communication to the public includes making a work available by diffusion whether or not anyone actually enjoys it, and a musical work is a work consisting of music. Those definitions do not determine whether a particular song or licence is cleared for your stream.

- Do not treat a consumer music subscription, owning an audio file, or adding attribution as broadcast permission.
- Ask whether licensed third-party content needs your channel to be allowlisted through Content ID. YouTube says a rightsholder may need to allowlist a channel for licensed use.
- Clear the visual too. A still image or looping artwork is suitable only if you have permission to use it and it fits the channel.
- Decide whether the live broadcast should remain available as a replay, and make sure your permissions cover that use as well.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the image, interrupt the broadcast, or end it. A licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the rightsholder has not allowlisted the channel. YouTube may also make claims on an archived live stream after the broadcast ends.
Check channel access and prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Confirm directly in the account that you can create an encoder stream. Eligibility rules and interface details can change, so do not rely on an old checklist to establish access.
- Create or select an encoder stream. Set its title, visibility, and schedule as needed, and use the server and stream-key details shown for that stream when configuring OBS.
- Keep the stream key private as ordinary account-security practice. If it is exposed, replace it in Studio and update the encoder with the new key.
- Leave the Live Control Room open during testing so you can see whether YouTube receives the feed and check its preview before relying on the setup unattended.
Build and test the OBS scene
Install a current OBS version supported by your Windows setup, then configure a simple scene: an authorized audio source plus a still image or visual loop you have permission to use. A static image is technically sufficient for a simple music programme, but it still needs to be rights-cleared and appropriate for the channel.

- In OBS, select the streaming service and enter the server and stream key supplied for the YouTube encoder stream. Menu names and available encoder choices may differ by OBS version and hardware.
- Choose a video resolution and frame rate that the PC can sustain for the whole broadcast. A simple static scene generally places less demand on the system than a complex animated layout, but test the actual scene you plan to use.
- Set the video encoder, video bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio bitrate according to the current instructions shown for your YouTube encoder stream and the encoder options available on your PC. Do not copy an arbitrary bitrate from another channel: OBS warns that an unstable connection or one that cannot sustain the selected bitrate can cause dropped frames.
- Check that the correct audio source is active in OBS, that the audio meter responds during playback, and that the scene displays as intended. Listen to the programme rather than relying on meters alone.
- If you need a starting point, OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help choose settings. Review its choices against the current Studio guidance, then stream privately or unlisted as appropriate and test for several minutes. OBS’s quick-start guidance recommends a test before you depend on the configuration.
- Verify the result in YouTube Studio’s preview and check for audio, image, or connection problems before scheduling unattended use.
Prepare Windows for headless, unattended operation
OBS lists Windows 10 and Windows 11 as supported operating systems, but compatible hardware alone does not guarantee that a particular PC can stream or record reliably. Encoder choice, output settings, and scene complexity affect the load. There is no single headless Windows recipe established for every edition, motherboard, GPU, audio device, and remote-access arrangement, so test the exact machine and configuration you will use.
- Keep the PC awake for the scheduled broadcast and check its actual sleep and power settings. Do not assume a default Windows configuration will remain awake indefinitely.
- Check what the firmware does after a power loss and whether the PC starts again as you expect. BIOS/UEFI labels and options vary by manufacturer; verify behavior on your own hardware.
- Test OBS startup, the Windows user session, audio routing, and reconnect behavior after a restart. Do not assume Windows or OBS will recover every failure without intervention.
- If no display is attached, test whether the graphics and audio devices still behave as expected. A configuration that works with a monitor connected may behave differently when it is removed.
- Plan Windows and driver updates for a maintenance window, and test how the machine and encoder behave after updates before leaving them unattended.
- Set up a remote way to check the PC and OBS if you need one, and confirm it works before the stream begins. Keep a separate recovery route if remote access depends on the same network connection that may fail.
OBS’s published system guidance discusses supported Windows versions and general resource considerations, not a guarantee for any particular unattended configuration. Keep the scene simple and choose settings the actual hardware can sustain.

Make the connection and recovery plan practical
OBS identifies an unstable connection or insufficient sustained upload capacity as causes of dropped frames. Its troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering the bitrate to fit stable upload capacity and favors wired networking because Wi-Fi may be unstable. If practical, connect the PC to the router with Ethernet; Wi-Fi may be more convenient to install, but it introduces a connection path OBS specifically cautions can be unstable. No universal minimum upload speed or India-wide ISP figure is established for this setup, so assess the connection you will actually use and leave headroom rather than relying on a single speed test.
Continuous streaming also depends on power to the PC and network equipment. A UPS may be useful, but choose capacity only after estimating the connected load and the runtime you want; no particular size or runtime applies universally. Assign someone to check the broadcast and respond to failures. Monitoring does not prevent every interruption, but without it a dropped stream may remain down until someone notices.

Launch the stream and verify it stays healthy
- Start the music playback and confirm the OBS audio meter and scene are correct.
- Start streaming from OBS, then check the YouTube Studio preview and stream status. Resolve any warning before leaving the PC unattended.
- Observe the stream for a meaningful test period, including the audio and image, and confirm that the PC, network, and encoder remain stable.
- After the test, document how to check the broadcast remotely, restart OBS if it stops, and recover the PC or network if necessary. Test the recovery steps rather than assuming they will work.
- Check the stream again after any material change to Windows, OBS, the encoder settings, the audio path, the network, or the programme content.
Troubleshoot common failures
