You can loop a recording through FFmpeg and send it to YouTube Live, but keeping a stream running around the clock takes more than one command: you need a channel that can go live, rights to the specific recording and any visuals, a tested encoder profile, dependable upload bandwidth, and a plan for monitoring and recovery. This guide walks through the setup and its limitations, including why a traditional raga does not automatically make a modern performance or recording free to stream.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming, with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
  • A recording and visuals you have permission to use in a YouTube livestream, including any necessary rights for the composition, arrangement, performance, and recording.
  • FFmpeg installed on a computer or server that can remain connected and running.
  • The ingest URL and stream key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
  • Stable outbound bandwidth with capacity above the stream’s total bitrate, plus a way to monitor the encoder and stream health.

YouTube’s live-streaming requirements and encoder recommendations can change. Check the current guidance in YouTube Help and the settings shown in Live Control Room before launch; test the exact profile you plan to use.

Clear rights for the music and visuals

Indian classical repertoire includes traditional compositions, but that does not by itself clear every recording of them. A particular rendition can involve a modern performer, arranger, record label, publisher, or other rights holder. Verify that your permission covers the actual recording and the composition or arrangement where relevant, as well as any image or video used in the stream.

YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the person providing the live content to have the necessary rights, including music licensing rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can trigger a warning, replace the live image with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast, or terminate it. Even if you hold a licence, YouTube says a livestream may still be interrupted unless the rights holder has added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams may also receive Content ID claims after the broadcast. Confirm permissions and any necessary allowlisting before you go live.

Enable live streaming and create the YouTube stream

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and confirm that live streaming is available for your channel. YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days.
  2. Open YouTube Studio → Create → Go live to reach Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream and select the stream settings that suit your broadcast.
  3. Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. Put them into your local FFmpeg command or configuration; do not expose the key in public scripts, screen shares, repositories, or shared logs.
  4. Use RTMPS when available. YouTube recommends it because it encrypts data between the encoder and YouTube’s servers.

Treat the stream key like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder before the next broadcast. Do not use a sample host or someone else’s key in a real stream.

Choose a supported encoder profile

For a music-led stream with a static image or restrained visual loop, a modest supported frame rate is usually sufficient. Choose resolution and bitrate based on YouTube’s current codec-specific guidance and your measured upload capacity rather than assuming that the highest available bitrate is necessary.

Setting YouTube guidance in the cited encoder help How to apply it
Video codec and bitrate For H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. For H.264 at 480p and 30 fps, 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. Use the row for the resolution and frame rate you select. These are YouTube recommendations, not a requirement that every music stream use the top figure.
Bitrate mode Constant bitrate (CBR) recommended. Set a steady target and verify that the encoder and connection can sustain it.
Keyframes Two-second interval recommended; do not exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second interval corresponds to 60 frames.
Audio AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS; stereo guidance is 44.1 kHz at 128 kbps. Listen to a test for silence, clipping, channel balance, and unwanted gaps.

These figures come from YouTube’s encoder guidance; they are not a guarantee of a particular sound quality or viewer experience. Check Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators during a test with the same kind of audio and motion as the intended broadcast.

Loop a local recording with FFmpeg

For a video file that already contains both the music and a compatible visual, a command can repeat the input and publish it as an FLV stream to YouTube’s RTMPS ingest. This example illustrates a 30 fps H.264 stream with a two-second keyframe interval and AAC stereo audio:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "music-and-visual.mp4"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 4000k -maxrate 4000k -bufsize 8000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_HOST/APP/STREAM_KEY"

Replace the input filename and output placeholder with your own media and the exact ingest details from Live Control Room. Do not publish the real stream key. If YouTube displays the server URL and key separately, use them as specified in its current encoder setup; do not assume that a placeholder address is a real YouTube endpoint.

  • -re reads the file at its native playback rate instead of sending it as fast as possible.
  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely.
  • -r 30 sets the example output frame rate. The GOP settings -g 60 and -keyint_min 60 illustrate a two-second interval at 30 fps.
  • -b:v and -maxrate set the example video bitrate to 4 Mbps; -bufsize is set to twice that value for this example. Match these settings to the chosen YouTube profile and your available upload bandwidth.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2 selects AAC stereo audio at the cited YouTube guidance for sample rate and bitrate.

The example bitrate is an illustration, not a universal preset. It is within YouTube’s cited recommended range for H.264 at 720p and 30 fps, but it may not suit a different resolution, source, or connection. The cited FFmpeg documentation demonstrates real-time file input and RTMP output; not every listed option is guaranteed to work with every FFmpeg build or source format. Check your installed build and test the complete output.

If your source is audio-only, provide a compatible visual source using an approach verified for your FFmpeg build, then test the combined output. A repeated file also does not make musical transitions seamless. Listen through the end and beginning of the loop for silence, abrupt cuts, clipped notes, or an unintended order. If you want a rotating playlist, test how the playlist advances and what happens when an item is unavailable instead of assuming it will be gapless.

Test the broadcast before leaving it on

  1. Start a private or otherwise suitable test stream in Live Control Room and run the same FFmpeg command, file, and settings you intend to use.
  2. Check the Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Listen for silence, clipping, unexpected gaps, and audio that does not match the image.
  3. Confirm that the stream key is correct and that YouTube receives the intended resolution, frame rate, and audio.
  4. Stop and restart the encoder deliberately. Observe how YouTube reports the interruption and confirm that your own restart procedure works.
  5. Test the file loop and any playlist transitions for long enough to encounter the boundary or item changes you expect during normal operation.

YouTube recommends monitoring stream quality continuously. A successful preview proves that the tested setup worked at that moment; it does not prove that a computer, process, or network will stay healthy indefinitely.

Plan bandwidth, monitoring, and recovery

YouTube recommends upload capacity about 20% above the total stream bitrate. Measure outbound upload performance, not just download speed, and leave this reserve for the video, audio, and network variation. For example, a 4 Mbps video target plus 128 kbps audio is already above 4 Mbps in aggregate, before protocol overhead; plan capacity above the combined rate rather than treating the video number as the whole stream.

For a true 24/7 operation, monitor both FFmpeg’s process and logs and YouTube’s stream health. Prepare and test a way to restart the encoder or fail over if the computer, source, or connection stops. A stable wired connection may be useful where available, but it is optional and cannot guarantee reliability.

FFmpeg’s HTTP input reconnect controls, including reconnect_at_eof, apply to certain HTTP inputs. They are not proof that FFmpeg will automatically recover a failed RTMP/RTMPS publishing session. Test restart behavior with your exact FFmpeg build, operating environment, network, and YouTube settings.

Understand the 24/7 archive limitation

YouTube’s cited encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that one uninterrupted 24/7 session will be archived indefinitely or define a universally reliable rotation procedure. If preserving archives matters, plan and test controlled session rotation and local recording, then verify the current behavior in Studio before relying on it.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely checks What to do
FFmpeg cannot connect or YouTube receives no stream Check the ingest URL, key, RTMPS support, network access, and whether live streaming is enabled for the channel. Copy fresh ingest details from Live Control Room, correct the output configuration, and test again. Reset a key if it may have been exposed.
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health Check outbound upload capacity against the combined video and audio bitrate, including the recommended reserve of about 20%. Reduce the selected profile’s bitrate or resolution to a supported level your connection can sustain, then retest stream health.
The video or audio is missing or incompatible Inspect the input file’s streams and formats and confirm that your FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and options. Test a known-compatible source and a complete output profile before scheduling a long session. For audio-only input, add and test a compatible visual source.
The stream is interrupted after a music match Check whether the recording, composition, arrangement, performance, or visual triggered a third-party match. Resolve the rights issue and arrange any necessary Content ID allowlisting with the rights holder before restarting. A licence alone may not prevent a live interruption.
The loop has a gap or abrupt transition Listen to the file boundary and verify how the playlist handles item changes. Edit or replace the source, or adjust the playlist, then listen through the transition in a fresh test.
The broadcast stops and does not resume Check whether FFmpeg exited, the input ended or became unavailable, the network dropped, or YouTube ended the ingest. Inspect the local logs and Live Control Room status, restore the source or connection, and use the restart procedure you tested. Do not rely on HTTP input reconnect options to repair a failed RTMPS publishing session.
