You can run a continuous devotional YouTube stream from a Vultr Cloud Compute server by using an Ubuntu instance as the encoder host, then sending a video feed to a YouTube Live event with OBS Studio or another encoder. Vultr’s guide documents an OBS-and-Ubuntu setup; its listed starting point is a tutorial baseline, not a guarantee of capacity or uptime. YouTube must have live streaming enabled on your channel before you begin, and first-time activation may take up to 24 hours.

What this setup does—and what it does not guarantee

The Vultr approach puts the encoder on a cloud server rather than a home computer. The server runs OBS Studio, which sends your video and audio to YouTube using the event’s stream URL and private stream key. Vultr’s guide also installs FFmpeg, but does not validate a particular FFmpeg script or production-grade failover design.

A cloud server can keep transmitting while your personal computer is off, but that alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. You still need to check server capacity, stream health, process recovery, network interruptions, and content rights. Continuous live transmission is also separate from YouTube’s replay archive behavior.

For a graphical OBS walkthrough, follow Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu guide. Use YouTube’s explanation of broadcasts and streams if you need to understand how a scheduled event and its incoming feed relate.

Prepare the YouTube channel and server

Enable live streaming before the planned start

In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for the channel. YouTube says first-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave this step until broadcast day. Once live streaming is available, create or schedule a live event and retrieve its stream URL and key from Studio.

Choose and size the Vultr instance

Vultr’s guide, updated 1 April 2025, gives a tutorial starting point of 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. These figures describe the guide’s prerequisites, not a universal minimum, guaranteed capacity, or uptime commitment. Vultr notes that higher resolution and frame rate require more processing power, and advises monitoring CPU use and lowering resolution or upgrading if needed.

Before deploying, compare the specific instance’s region, CPU, memory, storage, included transfer, and any applicable transfer charges against your intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and broadcast schedule. Current Vultr prices and region-specific terms are not established here; verify them on Vultr before committing. A mostly static devotional image with audio and a multi-scene, full-motion program are different workloads, so leave CPU headroom and test the actual content.

Connect securely and install the encoder tools

Deploy Ubuntu and connect over SSH using a non-root account with sudo privileges. Vultr’s documented OBS path uses a desktop environment and remote desktop so OBS can be configured through its graphical interface. Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg as described in the Vultr guide. Keep the operating system and packages maintained, and restrict remote desktop and SSH access to trusted users.

Configure OBS for YouTube Live

  1. Create the event: In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and open its stream settings.
  2. Copy the ingest details: Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that event. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or place it in a public script or repository.
  3. Set the OBS stream destination: In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube or a custom service as appropriate, and enter the stream URL and key. Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends streaming with RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP.
  4. Set output to match the source and target: Choose a resolution and frame rate your server can sustain. Consult YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions table for the bitrate corresponding to your chosen output. The exact value depends on the resolution and frame rate; do not rely on a stale preset.
  5. Use constant bitrate and keyframes: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed four seconds. Apply those settings in OBS’s output/encoder controls.
  6. Build the devotional scene or playlist: Add the authorized video, image, audio, or other sources needed for the program. Confirm that audio is present and that the scene does not stop when a file reaches its end. For repeat playback, configure the source or playlist to loop and test the transition back to the beginning.
  7. Test before going public: Run a private or unlisted test with representative sound and movement. Watch YouTube’s stream health messages and OBS statistics, and check CPU use on the Vultr server. YouTube transcodes the incoming stream for viewers on different devices and networks; the outgoing encode still needs to reach YouTube cleanly.
  8. Start the broadcast: Start streaming in OBS, confirm that YouTube receives the feed and reports healthy status, then start the event in Studio if the event workflow requires it. Verify the public watch page from a separate device.

Vultr’s guide says to use 720p (1280 × 720) if the server has 2 vCPUs or more. Treat that as the guide’s tutorial-specific advice, not proof that every two-vCPU instance can encode every workload reliably at 720p. Measure the real content and reduce resolution or frame rate if CPU use or stream health is unstable.

Make a continuous stream recoverable

A long-running encoder needs operational supervision, not just a successful first start. Configure an appropriate process supervisor or service for the encoder you choose, monitor the server and YouTube stream health, and test what happens after a server restart and a network interruption. Vultr’s guide discusses OBS retry settings and CPU checks, but does not establish a validated production failover design.

  • Confirm the encoder process starts after a planned server reboot.
  • Test recovery from a brief network interruption and verify that YouTube receives video and audio again.
  • Check CPU use, storage, and bandwidth consumption during a representative session.
  • Keep the stream key private and have a safe procedure for replacing it if it is exposed.
  • Do not assume that reconnecting the encoder also restarts or correctly resumes the YouTube event; verify the behavior in Studio.

Plan separately for the replay archive

A 24/7 live feed is not a guaranteed complete recording. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If preserving a complete replay matters, record independently and plan how to publish or divide recordings into manageable segments. If you need YouTube’s automatic archive, plan shorter events within its under-12-hour guidance and verify the result in Studio. A single continuous broadcast may be simpler operationally, but it is not a substitute for an archive plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check rights and YouTube suitability before looping content

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for each specific song, reading, recording, artwork, and video, including permission for the intended YouTube use. Devotional subject matter does not by itself establish that a recording or visual is free to use. YouTube’s handling of a stream can also depend on the content and channel circumstances; do not treat a successful test or an absence of an immediate warning as proof of rights clearance.

OBS on Vultr versus a scripted FFmpeg workflow

Approach What changes What the documented setup establishes
OBS on Ubuntu Graphical scene, source, and stream configuration Vultr documents an OBS-and-Ubuntu procedure, including a remote desktop route.
FFmpeg Command-line encoding and potentially scripted playout Vultr’s guide installs FFmpeg, but it does not validate a specific 24/7 FFmpeg service script or failover plan.

Choose OBS if you want a graphical way to assemble scenes and configure the feed. A scripted FFmpeg arrangement may suit operators comfortable managing command-line playout, but you must independently build and test the service, looping behavior, supervision, and recovery. In either case, use YouTube’s current encoder guidance and test the intended material on the selected instance.

Estimate upload and operating costs before committing

Vultr’s tutorial prerequisites include 3 TB of bandwidth, but the guide’s example is not a cost estimate for your location or schedule. Check the chosen plan’s current monthly cost, included transfer, storage, region, and overage terms directly with Vultr. Estimate the stream’s outgoing data from its bitrate and total broadcast hours, then leave room for tests, reconnects, and other server traffic.
