Run FFmpeg as the main process of a systemd service on your Vultr VPS and set Restart=on-failure with a short delay. That lets systemd start FFmpeg again after a qualifying crash. It does not fix every stream outage: a process can stay alive while YouTube receives a stalled or unhealthy feed, so check stream health separately.
Know which kind of failure you need to recover from
Systemd and FFmpeg can help with different failure modes; neither one alone guarantees that a YouTube event is healthy.

Run FFmpeg under systemd
Make FFmpeg the service’s main process so systemd can observe when it exits. A shell wrapper that ends independently can make supervision less straightforward. The example below uses Restart=on-failure and a five-second delay; adjust the delay for your stream and recovery needs. These are example settings, not a Vultr-specific default.
Create the unit
On an Ubuntu VPS, create a service file such as /etc/systemd/system/youtube-stream.service. Replace the example command with your existing FFmpeg command and use the correct paths for your installation.

WantedBy=multi-user.targetThe FFmpeg command is only a structural example: choose an input, encoding options, ingest URL, and stream key that fit your source and YouTube Studio settings. Do not put a real stream key in a public example, shared repository, or exposed unit file.
Load, start, and enable the service
- After saving the unit, run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadso systemd reads it. - Start it with
sudo systemctl start youtube-stream.service. - Check the result with
sudo systemctl status youtube-stream.service. - Enable it at boot with
sudo systemctl enable youtube-stream.service. To enable and start it together, usesudo systemctl enable --now youtube-stream.service. - Read recent logs with
sudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -n 100 --no-pager; follow new entries withsudo journalctl -u youtube-stream.service -f.
Systemd’s documented restart behavior covers failure exits, qualifying signals, timeouts, and watchdog expiry. Restart=always also restarts after a clean FFmpeg exit, which is useful only if a normal exit should start another run. An explicit systemctl stop is not restarted. See the systemd.service manual.

Test restart behavior safely
Test on a private or scheduled test event rather than disrupting a public broadcast. Confirm that FFmpeg starts, that YouTube receives the feed, and that a deliberate test failure causes the unit to restart. Then inspect the journal and YouTube Studio. A service reporting “active” proves only that its process is running; it does not prove that viewers can watch a healthy stream.
Retry transient output errors with FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer
Systemd restarts a process after it exits; it does not handle every temporary output connection problem while FFmpeg is still alive. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has RTMP recovery options that can retry some output errors without requiring a full process restart.

-f fifo -fifo_format flv -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1FFmpeg’s manual includes an RTMP recovery example using these options. It documents max_recovery_attempts as unlimited when set to its default of 0. Exact placement depends on your current command, output structure, and FFmpeg build; verify that your build supports the options and check its output logs. FIFO recovery is not a substitute for systemd if FFmpeg terminates. See the FFmpeg manual.
Match YouTube’s ingest settings and protect the stream key
Use the current ingest URL, protocol, and stream key shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Before the real broadcast, test with similar audio and video, monitor stream health, and verify that the event is accessible. The current YouTube encoder settings guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. It documents supported video formats and recommends CBR; for RTMP/RTMPS audio, it lists AAC or MP3 as supported options. Follow the latest settings displayed for your event rather than assuming one command suits every source.

- Bitrate and bandwidth: Choose a video resolution and bitrate compatible with the stream and available upload capacity. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total stream bitrate. This is YouTube’s recommendation, not a Vultr egress-limit claim.
- Keyframe interval: Set the encoder’s keyframe interval to two seconds when practical, and do not exceed four seconds under YouTube’s guidance. For a fixed-frame-rate command, the GOP value depends on frame rate; for example, 60 frames corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps.
- Credential safety: Treat the stream key as a credential. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder or service configuration. See Manage live stream settings.
- Broadcast rights: Confirm that you have the rights to all video and audio in the stream. A technically healthy feed does not resolve copyright claims or other YouTube policy issues.
Troubleshoot crashes, disconnects, and frozen streams
- The service exits immediately: Check
systemctl status youtube-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u youtube-stream.servicefor a bad executable path, invalid FFmpeg option, inaccessible input, or malformed command. Correct the underlying error before relying on repeated restarts. - systemd does not restart after a failure: Confirm the unit has
Restart=on-failure, then runsudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter editing it. An intentional stop is not a failure restart; usesystemctl startto start it again manually. - FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no feed: Check the ingest URL and key in Studio, the selected protocol, FFmpeg’s output log, and the event’s stream-health indicator. Consider FIFO output recovery for transient RTMP errors; if the process remains alive through a silent stall, a process restart policy may not trigger.
- Frames drop or the feed buffers: Check VPS CPU use, input read speed, and outbound capacity. Vultr’s 2025 Ubuntu streaming-server guide concerns OBS rather than this FFmpeg service setup, but it notes that CPU pressure can cause dropped frames and buffering in its OBS scenario, and suggests lowering resolution or using a plan with more vCPUs. Its suggested CPU threshold is not a universal FFmpeg requirement. See the Vultr guide.
- The stream drops during network interruptions: Check VPS connectivity and available upload headroom, then review whether FFmpeg logs an output error or YouTube reports an unhealthy feed. A restarted process may still fail again if the underlying connection or resource problem remains.
