YouTube receives the encoder’s audio-video output; the playlist that supplies that output is managed upstream, in OBS or another media workflow. A playlist change does not guarantee a gapless transition or preserve the current playback position, so rehearse the exact change before using it on a public 24/7 channel.
Understand what stays live—and what changes
Your encoder sends the live audio and video to YouTube using YouTube’s server URL and a stream key. The encoder controls whether it is sending content: YouTube Help instructs creators to start the stream with the encoder and stop sending content from the encoder to end it. The media playlist is a separate layer. Change the playlist or source feeding the encoder while leaving its YouTube output active; do not end the YouTube stream for every genre change. YouTube Help’s encoder setup instructions describe the connection workflow, while the YouTube Live Streaming API guide distinguishes the stream transmission from its associated broadcast.
This separation is the key to keeping one live feed connected. It does not mean every playlist edit is seamless: YouTube and OBS documentation do not promise that arbitrary live edits preserve playback position or avoid a brief interruption in the media output.
Choose how to organize genre playlists in OBS
Use a VLC Video source for a file playlist
OBS documents VLC Video as a source that can play a playlist of files. Its settings include Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist. VLC must be installed for the VLC source to work. This is a practical option when you want one list to cycle through documentary videos in a genre, such as nature, history, or science. See the OBS VLC Video Source documentation.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use separate sources or scenes for distinct genre setups
You can organize different genre selections as separate OBS sources or scenes and switch which media is feeding the output. Genre names, schedules, and the policy for rotating between lists are your configuration choices; they are not YouTube playlist-scheduling features. Consider how each setup handles ordering, a file reaching its end, a source becoming hidden, and updates made while live. Validate those behaviors in your own OBS installation rather than assuming a live change will behave identically across configurations.
Set up the stream and rotate genres
- Prepare the media lists. Create a separate list for each genre and decide whether each should play in order, loop, or shuffle. Confirm the files play as intended in the chosen source before scheduling them for a continuous broadcast.
- Configure the YouTube connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and its stream key. Copy YouTube’s server URL and key into your encoder’s streaming settings. Follow the current Live Control Room interface, since labels and steps may change.
- Start the encoder output. Start streaming from OBS and verify the outgoing preview and stream status in YouTube before treating the broadcast as live. YouTube documents the encoder as the source of the transmission.
- Change the media selection, not the broadcast. When it is time to change genres, select the next upstream source or playlist while keeping OBS’s YouTube output running. The precise controls depend on how you organized the sources and lists.
- Monitor the transition. Watch and listen to the outgoing preview and confirm the new media is reaching the stream. Keep a fallback scene or media item available as an operational precaution.
Before relying on a rotation schedule, rehearse it in a private or unlisted broadcast. Test the specific actions you intend to use—editing a list, switching a scene, or changing a source—and check whether the current item continues, restarts, or briefly leaves the output. The official documentation establishes playlist and connection features, but it does not certify every live-update behavior.

Choose a rotation workflow that fits the channel
| Workflow | Useful when | Check before going live |
|---|---|---|
| One VLC playlist per genre | You want a straightforward file list with loop or shuffle options. | Confirm VLC is installed, and test how the active list behaves when you edit it or change the selected media. |
| Separate OBS scenes or sources | Genres need different media selections or a deliberate manual switch. | Test what happens when a source is hidden, a file ends, or you switch scenes during the broadcast. |
| Timed or automated rotation | You need changes to happen on a schedule rather than through a manual operator action. | Automation is a configuration choice, not a genre-rotation feature established by YouTube’s cited setup instructions. Validate the chosen software, plugin, or service in your own environment. |
For a small number of static lists, the choice often comes down to how easily you can maintain tracks and whether you need ordered playback, shuffle, manual changes, or timed changes. Regardless of the method, plan how you will notice a failed or silent source and recover without intentionally ending the YouTube output.
Keep protocol playlists separate from media playlists
YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation discusses a rolling playlist of live segments sent to YouTube, including a limit of no more than five outstanding segments, and notes that HLS has higher latency than RTMP. That protocol-level playlist is not a user-facing scheduler for rotating prerecorded videos by genre. It concerns how an encoder delivers live segments, not which documentary plays next. See Google’s HLS ingestion documentation.

Plan for archives and content rights
Decide how to manage a continuous archive
YouTube Help states that all streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A 24/7 broadcast extends beyond that duration, so do not assume the entire continuous schedule will be available as one automatic archive. Decide whether your channel needs separate shorter broadcasts or another archive workflow, and check the broadcast’s actual archive status in YouTube Studio. The cited guidance does not establish one universal archive method for longer schedules. See YouTube Help.
Confirm you have rights to the media
Changing genres does not change the rights requirements for the videos, music, images, or other material in the feed. Before scheduling documentaries or related media, confirm that you have permission to stream them on YouTube and that the permission covers continuous or repeated playback where applicable. A successful encoder connection does not establish that a video is authorized or eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current copyright guidance and channel monetization policies for the rules that apply to your content and channel.

Troubleshoot a genre switch
- The YouTube stream ends during a change: Check whether you stopped the encoder output or ended the broadcast instead of changing the upstream source. Keep the encoder’s YouTube output active while you switch media.
- The new genre does not appear: Confirm the intended source or playlist is selected and visible in the active scene, and that its media is playing. Check the outgoing preview rather than relying only on the OBS canvas.
- Playback restarts or skips during an edit: Treat this as source-specific behavior, not a YouTube continuity guarantee. Rehearse the exact edit; if it disrupts playback, switch at a planned boundary or use a workflow whose behavior you have tested.
- A VLC playlist source is unavailable: Confirm VLC is installed and restart or recheck OBS after installation. The OBS VLC source documentation lists VLC as a requirement.
- The feed is silent or the file does not play: Test the media in the selected source and verify audio in the outgoing preview. The cited documentation does not certify arbitrary file compatibility or audio normalization.
- The archive is shorter than expected: Check YouTube Studio and account for YouTube Help’s stated automatic-archive rule for streams under 12 hours. Do not presume a longer continuous schedule will be stored as one complete archive.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of prerecorded videos without keeping OBS or a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
