OBS encodes that scene and sends it to YouTube Live; VLC handles playback, not publishing.
What you need
- OBS Studio and VLC media player installed on the same computer. OBS says its VLC Video source requires VLC; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC too. OBS VLC Video Source documentation
- The video files you want to rotate, accessible to the computer running OBS.
- A YouTube channel and a stream created or selected in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. You will use its server URL and stream key in OBS. YouTube live streaming with an encoder
Add a VLC playlist to an OBS scene
- Open OBS and select the scene that should carry the video feed. If you do not have one, create a scene for the livestream.
- In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name, then confirm.
- In the source properties, add the video files to the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want if you plan to play them sequentially.
- Check the playback options described below, then select OK. Confirm the video appears in the OBS preview and size or position it as needed.
Choose the playlist order and end behavior
OBS’s VLC Video source has separate controls for what happens at the end of the list and how items are ordered. The documented defaults are Loop Playlist: On and Shuffle Playlist: Off. OBS VLC Video Source documentation

These controls are not the same as VLC’s Repeat behavior, which repeats the current playlist item. Loop repeats the playlist when it reaches the end. VLC playlist reference
Set behavior when the source is hidden
In the VLC Video source properties, review Visibility Behaviour. It determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible. OBS documents the default as stopping playback while hidden and restarting when visible. If you switch scenes during a broadcast and expect the playlist to continue, select a suitable behavior and verify it in a rehearsal; there is not one universally correct setting for every scene layout. Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service if offered, and enter or select the server and stream key. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your stream.
- Apply the settings and start streaming in OBS. Check the Live Control Room for the incoming encoder preview. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s documented workflow calls for the preview to appear before you select Go live.
- When finished, stop the encoder feed in OBS and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; verify the current Live Control Room workflow because platform rules can change. YouTube live streaming with an encoder
The playlist itself does not publish to YouTube. OBS is the encoder that sends the active scene, including VLC playback, to the server URL using your stream key.
Rehearse before a public broadcast
Run the full playlist in a private or unlisted rehearsal before relying on it for a public event. Confirm that each file plays, the chosen order and loop behavior match your plan, and scene changes do not interrupt playback unexpectedly. Official documentation does not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted playback across every format, file, and computer.

If your media is reached over a network, OBS exposes a network-caching control; its documented default is 400 ms. Treat that as the interface’s default value, not as a guaranteed buffering fix or a setting that is right for every connection. OBS VLC Video Source documentation
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu
Make sure VLC is installed. Also match the application architecture: OBS’s documentation specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. Restart OBS after installing VLC and check the Sources menu again. OBS VLC Video Source documentation

The playlist stops after the last video
Check Loop Playlist in the VLC Video source properties. Enable it to restart the full list when it runs out. If you intended to repeat only one video, distinguish that behavior from looping the whole playlist.
The videos play in an unexpected order
Turn Shuffle Playlist off for listed-order playback, and arrange the playlist items in the sequence you want. If shuffle is on, randomized ordering is expected.

Playback pauses, stops, or restarts after a scene switch
Inspect Visibility Behaviour on the VLC Video source and choose the behavior appropriate for a hidden source. Also confirm that the scene containing the source remains the active output scene. Test the specific scene changes in rehearsal.
YouTube does not show an encoder preview
Confirm OBS is streaming to the server URL and stream key for the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the intended scene is active. Allow the encoder feed to connect, then check the Live Control Room again. For a scheduled stream, follow YouTube’s preview-then-Go live sequence. YouTube live streaming with an encoder

Keep the playlist’s rights and content in mind
Using VLC or OBS does not grant permission to broadcast the files. Use videos and audio you own or have permission to stream, and review YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before broadcasting. A playlist can repeat content, but repetition alone does not establish that you have the rights to it or that a channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies.
