Use OBS Studio’s VLC Video source to play sermon recordings in order and loop them into a YouTube Live broadcast. Install VLC, build and test the playlist, then connect OBS to a scheduled or new encoder stream in YouTube Studio with the stream URL and key. Keep a person available to monitor it: a local OBS setup depends on the computer, files, power, and internet connection staying available.
What you need
- A computer that can run OBS Studio and VLC, plus the sermon video files stored somewhere the computer can access throughout the broadcast.
- An internet connection with upload capacity above the stream’s bitrate. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% upload headroom rather than using all available capacity for the stream. YouTube’s encoder streaming guidance covers bandwidth and stream quality.
- A YouTube channel with access to create an encoder-based live stream in YouTube Studio.
- Permission to broadcast each sermon and every element in it, including music, performances, photographs, and video clips.
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed; install the version whose 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS. OBS documents common media formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, WebM, MP3, AAC, and WAV. See OBS Media Sources documentation.
Build and test the looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC, checking that both use the same 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Open OBS and select the scene that will carry the stream. In the Sources panel, select + and add VLC Video. If the source is not available, check that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture.
- In the source properties, add the sermon files in the order you want viewers to hear them. Use the playlist controls to arrange the list and remove any file you do not have rights to broadcast.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled. OBS describes this setting as controlling whether the source restarts when it runs out of media files; it is on by default.
- For a single sermon that should repeat, use an OBS Media Source instead and enable its Loop option.
- Play through the playlist before going live. Check that the opening begins where intended, audio levels are suitable, aspect ratio looks right, and transitions between recordings do not expose unwanted gaps or slate frames. These are practical checks; the precise result depends on the files and source settings.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule an encoder-based live stream and open its Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the URL and key if the fields are presented. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the incoming picture and sound to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room preview; confirm the correct scene and playlist are running.
- When the preview is correct, use YouTube Studio’s control to go live if the stream is scheduled or requires a separate confirmation. Keep OBS running and monitor the broadcast.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to create an encoder stream and connect it. YouTube advises monitoring encoder audio and video quality; its event guidance recommends starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before an event so there is time to check the preview. See YouTube’s streaming guidance.
Keep a long-running broadcast reliable
Protect the local playback chain
For an OBS playlist, playback runs on the computer. Keep it awake, leave the media files accessible, and monitor both OBS and the YouTube stream. A power, computer, storage, or network interruption can stop the feed; the cited OBS and YouTube instructions do not promise automatic recovery for a local setup. Have someone who can intervene and restart the stream if needed.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Leave upload capacity in reserve
YouTube recommends upload bandwidth beyond the stream bitrate and about 20% headroom. If the available upstream capacity is close to the bitrate, other network activity can undermine the feed. Monitor stream health in Live Control Room rather than assuming that a successful preview guarantees a stable broadcast.
Plan the archive and viewer rewind window
YouTube says encoder streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replayable archive matters, end the broadcast before it passes 12 hours and start a new scheduled stream. Consider keeping a local recording as backup. YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance explains the archive limit.

DVR lets viewers pause and rewind while a stream is live, but YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable beyond 12 hours. Viewers cannot seek to a point before the broadcast began. See YouTube DVR guidance.
Check rights and monetization before streaming
Confirm that the church or channel has the necessary rights for the sermon recordings and all embedded media. YouTube scans live streams for third-party copyrighted material. It may replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or make a claim on an archived stream. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption if the relevant rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world”.

If the channel is monetized, permission to rebroadcast does not by itself establish monetization eligibility. YouTube’s channel monetization policy calls for original, authentic content and says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible; reused-content review is separate from copyright permission. Eligible channels may use live ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, or memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. If ads are enabled, do not promise viewers uninterrupted sermons.

Troubleshoot common failures
- VLC Video is missing from OBS: confirm VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit architecture matches OBS.
- The playlist stops after the final sermon: open the VLC Video source properties and check that Loop Playlist is enabled. For a single file in Media Source, enable Loop.
- YouTube receives no picture or sound: check that OBS is streaming, the selected scene contains the intended source, and the media is playing. Verify the stream URL and key in OBS against the stream details in YouTube Studio; do not publish the key.
- The preview is unstable or stream health is poor: check upload capacity and preserve YouTube’s recommended headroom, then reduce competing network use or adjust the stream bitrate to fit the connection.
- Viewers encounter a sudden interruption or placeholder: review the recording for third-party music or other protected material and check YouTube’s copyright notifications. Permissions may not prevent a live interruption if Content ID allowlisting has not been arranged.
- The replay is missing or viewers cannot rewind far: check whether the broadcast exceeded 12 hours. YouTube warns that longer streams may not be archived, and DVR may be limited or unavailable past that point.
