You can rotate prerecorded videos in a continuous YouTube Live broadcast by playing a local playlist on a Raspberry Pi and sending that playback through an encoder to YouTube. The rotation happens at the playback layer: the encoder keeps one stream going while the source moves from one clip to the next. The exact playlist setup and the Pi’s ability to sustain your chosen format depend on your files, software version, hardware and network, so test the complete setup before leaving it unattended.

How the setup works

The Pi reads video files from local storage, plays them in sequence, and feeds that playback to an encoder. The encoder sends the audio and video to YouTube using the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder).

The video rotation does not require a new live event for every clip. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a broadcast—the watchable event—from a stream, the transmission settings used to send audio and video. A stream can be bound to as many as three broadcasts; that is separate from rotating clips within one broadcast (Google for Developers: YouTube Live Streaming API).

Set up the YouTube live stream

  1. Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, start the live-stream setup and complete any channel verification or activation requirements shown. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before your planned start.
  2. Create or select the broadcast and stream. In YouTube Studio’s live control room, configure the event or reusable stream you intend to use. The exact labels can vary as Studio changes.
  3. Copy the ingest details. Copy YouTube’s server URL and stream key into the encoder configuration. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or public forum.
  4. Choose RTMPS where available. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encoder ingest. Use the server URL supplied by Studio rather than guessing an endpoint.

Prepare a playlist that can play continuously

Make the video files available locally on the Pi and choose a playback method that presents them as one continuous source to the encoder. Possible approaches include a playlist player, an FFmpeg concat workflow, or looping a prepared sequence. The right choice depends on the installed FFmpeg/player version and the characteristics of the media.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Do not assume a command copied from another setup will work unchanged: playlist syntax, real-time pacing, looping behavior and handling of audio or format changes are version- and input-dependent. Check the documentation for the exact software installed on the Pi, then test the sequence from its first clip through the end of the list and back to the beginning.

Check the transitions

  • Confirm the last clip advances to the first clip without the playlist stopping.
  • Check whether transitions create a black frame, a pause, an audio gap, or a sudden level change.
  • Test files with different resolutions, frame rates, aspect ratios, codecs and audio layouts; these differences can expose problems that a uniform test playlist will not.
  • Decide how missing, unreadable or newly added files should be handled. Verify the behavior rather than assuming the player will skip or reload them.

Choose an encoder profile YouTube can ingest

YouTube’s settings are ingest guidance, not proof that a particular Raspberry Pi can encode a given profile continuously. Start with a profile suitable for your material and only use it after the actual Pi sustains it during a representative test. YouTube automatically transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats, so the encoder sends one suitable input profile rather than a separate encode for every viewer rendition.

H.264 input profile YouTube minimum video bitrate YouTube recommended video bitrate
720p30 2 Mbps 3 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published ingest figures on its encoder-settings page, accessed 2026-10-03; they are not measured Raspberry Pi performance or a guarantee of stream quality (YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions).

  • Codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265 and AV1 video for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm your encoder and Pi can produce the selected combination.
  • Rate control: YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR).
  • Keyframes: Set a 2-second keyframe interval; YouTube says it should not exceed 4 seconds.
  • Frame rate: YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but that does not mean every Pi can encode every resolution at 60 fps. Match the profile to the board’s sustained performance and the source material.
  • Upload capacity: Run an upload-speed test from the network the Pi will use. Allow headroom beyond the selected video bitrate for audio, network variation and other traffic; a brief peak-speed result alone does not establish reliable continuous capacity.

Test before leaving the stream unattended

  1. Run the full playlist locally and watch for skipped files, stalls, bad transitions or playback that stops at the end.
  2. Start a test broadcast using the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio and ingest endpoint. Use footage with movement and audible content so the test is representative.
  3. Check the YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm both video and audio arrive as expected.
  4. Observe the Pi during an extended run for sustained encoding problems, overheating symptoms, playback drift or resource pressure. There is no established universal Raspberry Pi model or profile for this workload; validate your specific board and media.
  5. Test the failure cases you expect to recover from, such as a network interruption or encoder restart. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring; what happens after a local process or connection failure depends on how you configure the Pi and encoder.

Copyright, reused material and channel rules

Only stream videos and audio you have the rights to broadcast on YouTube. Owning a copy of a documentary or having permission to show it privately does not, by itself, establish permission to stream it publicly. Check the rights for every film, clip, soundtrack, photograph and other included material, including any limits on territory, duration or monetization.

Permission to use content and eligibility for YouTube monetization are different questions. Repeatedly broadcasting prerecorded material does not guarantee monetization, and this setup does not determine whether a channel or its videos meet YouTube’s current policies. Review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization policies for your specific content before starting.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube does not receive a signal Server URL, stream key, live activation or network access Confirm live streaming is activated, re-copy the current server URL and key from Studio, and check that the Pi can reach YouTube’s ingest service. Never paste the key into a public support post.
Video starts but stops at the end of the playlist Loop or end-of-list behavior Check the player or FFmpeg documentation for the installed version, then test the complete sequence through the return to the first clip.
Stream health reports unstable or poor delivery Upload capacity, bitrate or network variation Repeat an upload-speed test on the Pi’s actual connection, reduce the selected profile or bitrate if necessary, and test with headroom rather than relying on a short speed-test peak.
Audio disappears or changes between clips Different audio formats, channel layouts or playlist transitions Test each file and each transition. Make the input formats consistent if the chosen playback and encoding path cannot handle the differences reliably.
Frames drop or the Pi cannot keep up Encoding workload or media compatibility Try a less demanding resolution or frame rate, verify the encoder’s actual settings, and repeat an extended test on that exact board. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations do not certify local encoding capacity.
The stream does not resume after a drop Local recovery configuration Determine whether playback, the encoder process or the network connection stopped. Test the restart procedure and decide how you will detect a failure and restore the broadcast before relying on unattended operation.

Local Pi or a cloud service?

A Raspberry Pi setup suits people who want local control and are prepared to configure and validate the player, encoder, network and recovery behavior. A cloud service avoids keeping a local computer running, but adds a service dependency; check the provider’s current feature and plan details before choosing it. YouTube’s encoder guidance names Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous prerecorded streams (YouTube Help).
