To reduce CPU use in an OBS fireplace stream, first identify whether the load comes from encoding, video decoding, or a complicated scene. Then try a local looping Media Source, remove unnecessary sources and filters, switch from x264 to a supported hardware encoder if encoding is the bottleneck, and lower output resolution or frame rate only if needed. There is no single OBS setting that guarantees a particular CPU reduction: the result depends on your hardware, encoder, output settings, and scene.
1. Find out what is using the resources
Before changing settings, note OBS’s CPU use, output resolution and frame rate, and the encoder selected in Settings > Output. Also check whether OBS reports encoding overload or dropped frames. Those symptoms do not all point to a CPU problem: rendering on the GPU, network delivery, or decoding the fireplace video may be the limiting factor instead.
OBS says performance requirements vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard can account for hardware and network conditions when helping configure OBS. See the OBS System Requirements and Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance.
2. Loop a local fireplace video with Media Source
If your fireplace footage is a file on the computer, use an OBS Media Source rather than loading the video from a webpage when the web page is not needed. A local source avoids maintaining an embedded browser just to play the footage, though video decoding still uses system resources.

- In your fireplace scene, click + under Sources and choose Media Source.
- Create or select a source, then browse to the local video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties so playback restarts when it reaches the end.
- If the system supports it, test Use hardware decoding when available. OBS documents this option as off by default; whether enabling it reduces CPU depends on the machine and file.
OBS documents supported Media Source workflows and properties in its Media Sources guide. If you use VLC Video for a playlist instead, VLC must be installed.
3. Make the active scene lighter
Remove sources and filters that the fireplace stream does not need. OBS notes that sources can use resources even when they are not visible, so hiding an unnecessary source may not be enough; remove it from the scene or keep it out of the active scene collection. Avoid duplicate full-canvas video layers and redundant overlays.

- Keep only the fireplace video, necessary audio, and essential overlays in the scene.
- Remove filters you are not using, especially those applied to large or full-frame sources.
- Keep scene collections focused rather than carrying unused sources into the live setup.

4. Reduce browser-source overhead
A Browser Source is an embedded web browser, not just a lightweight video player. If the fireplace footage or overlays come from a browser source, test replacing video playback with a local Media Source where possible. Remove unneeded browser overlays and keep retained browser sources only as large as their on-screen role requires.

Browser rendering may still be necessary for a web-based element, and reducing its size is not a guaranteed CPU fix. OBS warns that many or complex browser sources can be resource intensive. Its Browser Source documentation and performance troubleshooting guide explain the relevant tradeoffs.
5. Try a supported hardware encoder if encoding is the bottleneck
If OBS’s CPU load is coming from x264 software encoding, check whether an encoder supported by your hardware appears in Settings > Output. Hardware encoding uses a specialized component in the GPU or processor to take work off the CPU, and OBS generally recommends it for performance. Availability varies with operating system, GPU or processor generation, and drivers, so use only an option actually shown in your installation.

Compare CPU headroom and the resulting image at your stream’s bitrate. OBS notes that older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate than software encoding at its default veryfast preset. Switching encoders is therefore a tradeoff, not an automatic improvement in every respect. Details are in OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide.

If simplifying the scene and choosing an appropriate encoder are not enough, reduce output resolution or frame rate in small steps and check both resource use and the picture on YouTube. Lower output resolution reduces encoder work; if 60 fps is not working reliably, OBS recommends trying 30 fps. A fireplace scene may not need the same motion smoothness as fast-action footage, but the right choice depends on the look you want and what your system can sustain.

Do not treat a particular resolution, bitrate, or frame rate as universally correct for fireplace streams. Make one change at a time so you can tell which adjustment helped. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide provides further steps.
7. Verify the change under real stream conditions
After each change, let the stream run long enough to see whether the result is stable. Compare OBS CPU use, overload or dropped-frame indicators, and the actual stream output. If CPU use does not improve after changing the encoder, the bottleneck may instead be decoding, rendering, or network delivery; revisit the relevant part of the setup rather than continuing to lower quality blindly.
