How to Rotate FFmpeg YouTube Stream Logs Without Filling a VPS Disk

A practical guide to bounded FFmpeg logs on a Linux VPS: choose verbosity, match rotation to process behavior, and verify disk and YouTube stream health.

To keep FFmpeg logs from filling a VPS disk, send stderr to a dedicated file, set a finite logrotate retention count, and choose rotation behavior that matches whether the running FFmpeg process can reopen that file. For a process that cannot, copytruncate is an option, but it can lose a small amount of log data during rotation. Keep routine logging at the lowest useful verbosity, and verify both disk usage and the YouTube feed after changing the setup.

How FFmpeg logs reach a file

FFmpeg writes log output to stderr by default. If you want a persistent logfile, redirect stderr in the service definition or wrapper that launches FFmpeg. Keep it in a dedicated directory with suitable ownership and permissions so log rotation and the service can access it deliberately.

Choose the verbosity for the task. FFmpeg documents info as its default level; warning includes warnings and errors, and error records errors, including recoverable ones. Less detail means fewer lines, but it can also remove information needed to diagnose a problem. Add the time or datetime flags to -loglevel when timestamps will help correlate events. See the FFmpeg documentation.

Avoid leaving -report enabled as routine logging unless you need its extra detail: it writes the command line and log output to a timestamped file in the current directory and implies debug-level logging. FFREPORT can configure a report filename and level. Use reports or debug/trace verbosity for time-limited troubleshooting, then remove or disable them. Reports may contain sensitive command-line details.

Keep the YouTube stream key private

YouTube describes a stream key as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Avoid exposing it in published reports or logs. Check launch commands, service configuration, and access permissions before sharing diagnostic output. See YouTube’s Manage live stream settings.

Choose a rotation method for the running process

Renaming a log file changes its directory entry, but an already-running writer can continue writing to the old file through its open file descriptor. A rename-and-create configuration therefore works only if the process or its supervisor can reliably reopen stderr or the log destination. Do not assume that sending FFmpeg a particular signal will make it reopen redirected stderr; arrange and verify a deployment-appropriate reopen mechanism, or restart the process during an acceptable maintenance window.

If the process cannot be told to close or reopen the logfile, logrotate’s copytruncate copies the current file and truncates the original in place. The logrotate manual warns that “some logging data might be lost” in the brief interval between copying and truncating. It avoids leaving the running writer attached to a renamed file, but it is not lossless. The manual also documents postrotate scripts, which can run a command after rotation; whether a particular service can use one to reopen its logs depends on that service’s behavior. See the logrotate manual.

Choice When it fits Limitation
Intentional, lower FFmpeg verbosity Routine streaming needs fewer diagnostic lines. Less detail can make troubleshooting harder.
Rename/create with a process reopen The supervisor or process can reliably reopen redirected stderr. Rename alone can leave FFmpeg writing to the old file; do not assume a signal reopens it.
copytruncate The process cannot close or reopen its logfile. A small amount of log data may be lost during the copy-and-truncate interval.
Finite retention and compression Old logs would otherwise accumulate. Thresholds and count need local measurement; compression uses processing time.

Set finite retention instead of guessing a universal limit

Rotation frequency and retention solve different problems. A schedule or size trigger determines when logrotate acts; rotate sets how many rotated versions to keep. Set a finite count and choose compression as appropriate. In logrotate, a count of zero removes old versions rather than retaining rotations. Delayed compression is available when a program may still be writing to the previous file.

Measure how quickly your actual logfile grows at the verbosity and workload you intend to use, then choose a size or time trigger and retention count that fit the disk capacity and the period for which logs are useful. There is no universal threshold or retention period: volume varies with verbosity, runtime conditions, and errors. Without a finite retention limit, rotating on a schedule alone does not bound total disk use.

The sketch omits permissions, scheduler behavior, distribution-specific defaults, and service-manager integration. If your deployment supports a reliable reopen mechanism, use an appropriate rename/create approach instead of assuming copytruncate is best. Check the installed logrotate version and its local configuration, test the rule, and inspect the running process’s open file descriptors before relying on it.

Apply the change and verify both disk and stream

  1. Record the current behavior. Note the FFmpeg launch command, log destination, current verbosity, and logfile size. Confirm that no long-lived -report output is accumulating unnecessarily.
  2. Choose the desired diagnostics. Set an intentional -loglevel and, if useful, timestamp flags. Confirm the resulting information is adequate for operations before reducing detail.
  3. Set the stderr destination. Configure the service or wrapper to redirect stderr to a dedicated logfile. Protect the file and any command output that could expose the stream key.
  4. Match logrotate to process behavior. Use rename/create only with a verified reopen or restart plan. Otherwise, consider copytruncate and account for its documented brief loss window. Define finite retention and compression as appropriate.
  5. Test the rule on the VPS. Check the local logrotate configuration and scheduler, trigger a controlled rotation if appropriate, and confirm that a new log continues receiving output and old versions stay within the configured count.
  6. Test the live feed before relying on it. Check YouTube’s preview, stream health, and messages; inspect FFmpeg output; and monitor free disk space plus active and rotated log sizes over time.

YouTube encoder guidance is separate from Linux log rotation. Rotation does not change the feed’s codec, bitrate, or ingest protocol. If you changed the FFmpeg launch configuration or restart behavior, verify that the feed still meets YouTube’s current recommendations for RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, supported codecs, and keyframe frequency. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds, and recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. Treat these as platform guidance, not log settings. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips.

YouTube recommends testing before going live, monitoring stream health and messages, and checking local archive integrity and growth. Set disk alerts according to the VPS filesystem’s capacity and the time you would need to respond; YouTube does not prescribe a VPS alert threshold.

Troubleshoot common rotation failures

  • The renamed log keeps growing. FFmpeg may still have the old file open. Verify its open file descriptors and configure a reliable reopen/restart plan, or use copytruncate if the process cannot close the file and its loss window is acceptable.
  • The new logfile stays empty. Check the service’s stderr redirection, directory and file permissions, and whether FFmpeg is still running and emitting messages. Confirm that the service manager did not redirect output elsewhere.
  • Disk use keeps rising after rotation. Check that the rule is being scheduled, that the path matches the actual logfile, and that a finite rotate count is configured. Look for separate report files or logs outside the rule’s path.
  • Useful diagnostic detail is missing. The selected log level may be too restrictive. Raise it to the least verbose level that captures the needed warning or error details, and use debug reports only for a bounded diagnostic period.
  • The live feed is unhealthy after a launch change. Check FFmpeg’s current errors and YouTube stream-health messages, then confirm the encoder settings and connectivity independently of the rotation rule.

Or let it run in the cloud
