To rotate FFmpeg logs without stopping a 24/7 YouTube stream, first identify where FFmpeg’s stderr goes. If systemd sends it to the journal, set retention in journald rather than rotating journal files with logrotate. If FFmpeg appends to a regular file and cannot reliably reopen it, logrotate’s copytruncate can rotate that file while the process keeps running, with a small risk of losing log data during the copy-and-truncate interval.
Find out where FFmpeg’s logs are going
FFmpeg logs to standard error (stderr) by default, according to the FFmpeg documentation. What happens next depends on how you start FFmpeg: a service manager may collect stderr, a shell may redirect it to a file, or FFmpeg may be configured to write a report file.
- Identify the launcher. Determine whether FFmpeg runs as a systemd service, under a supervisor or container, or from an interactive shell. Check the service or launch command for output redirection and FFmpeg report options.
- Check the active destination. For a systemd unit, inspect its output configuration and use
journalctlto view its records. For a redirected file, locate the actual path and check whether FFmpeg continues appending there. If the command uses-reportorFFREPORT, account for the report file separately. - Check the local versions and configuration. Run
ffmpeg -versionand consult the installed FFmpeg, logrotate, and systemd documentation. Online manuals and defaults can differ from the versions and settings on a particular VPS.
Choose a rotation method that fits the destination
| Logging path | Retention method | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|
| systemd captures FFmpeg stderr in the journal | journald storage limits; journalctl can vacuum archived journal files |
Persistence and limits depend on host configuration. Vacuum commands do not necessarily remove active journal files. |
| FFmpeg appends to a regular file and cannot reliably reopen it | logrotate with copytruncate, a selected trigger, rotation count, and optional compression |
The logrotate manual documents a small data-loss window between copying and truncating the file. |
| FFmpeg has a verified way to reopen a renamed log | logrotate can rename the old file, create a new one, and run a postrotate action |
The reopen mechanism depends on the deployment. A script running successfully does not prove FFmpeg began writing to the new file. |
If systemd sends FFmpeg output to journald
Use the journal’s own storage and retention controls; do not apply a file-oriented logrotate rule to journal files. Service stdout and stderr can be collected by journald. Depending on the host configuration, journal storage may be persistent under /var/log/journal or volatile under /run/log/journal; volatile records are lost at reboot. Inspect the actual storage mode and limits before relying on logs to survive a restart.
Use journalctl to inspect the unit’s records. Its --vacuum-size=, --vacuum-time=, and --vacuum-files= options operate on archived journal files and may leave active files in place. See the journald configuration documentation and journalctl documentation for the controls available in the installed version.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If FFmpeg appends to a regular file
When FFmpeg keeps a file descriptor open, renaming the file alone may not make it write to a new file at the original pathname. If you cannot verify a reliable reopen mechanism for this FFmpeg process, copytruncate is the straightforward logrotate option: it copies the current file and truncates that same file in place so the process can continue appending.
The logrotate manual warns that a small interval between copying and truncating can result in lost logging data. Use this method only if that risk is acceptable for these diagnostic logs.

This example shows a possible rule shape; it is not a universal retention recommendation. Adapt the path, ownership needs, trigger, and retention to the host, then validate it against the installed logrotate version.

Set the trigger and retention from observed growth
dailygives logrotate a daily opportunity to rotate; it does not by itself cap a sudden burst before the next run. logrotate also supports size-based rotation andmaxsizealongside a time interval.rotate 7retains seven rotated generations before older ones are removed. It does not guarantee exactly seven days of history if rotation occurs more or less often than once a day.compresscompresses older rotated files. Consider whether compressed logs remain accessible enough for the troubleshooting you expect to do.missingokavoids treating a missing log as an error;notifemptyskips rotation when the log is empty.- Observe log growth and compare it with free disk space and the time period for which logs are useful. Select a schedule, size threshold, and rotation count that fit that budget rather than copying sample numbers blindly.
Use a reopen action only when it is verified
If the running process can reliably reopen its output, a rename-and-create pattern with a postrotate action can avoid the copytruncate data-loss window. logrotate supports creating a replacement file and executing a post-rotation script. The available documentation does not establish one portable FFmpeg-specific reopen signal for every build and launch method, so confirm the actual mechanism for your process before using it. Check that new messages reach the new current log after rotation.

Review FFmpeg report logging
FFmpeg’s -report option writes the command line and log output to a timestamped file and implies debug-level logging. FFREPORT can set a report filename and numerical log level. These are diagnostic facilities, not a retention policy. For an always-on process, check whether either is enabled, whether debug verbosity is needed after troubleshooting, and where report files accumulate. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the syntax supported by the version installed on the VPS.
Validate the policy without assuming the stream is protected
- Review the configuration using documentation for the installed logrotate and systemd versions, if applicable.
- Validate the logrotate rule with the host’s supported configuration-checking procedure, then arrange a controlled test or maintenance window appropriate to the service.
- After a rotation, verify that FFmpeg is still writing to the intended current destination, that old files are compressed or removed as configured, and that the expected logs can still be inspected.
- For journald, inspect the unit’s records and confirm the configured persistence and storage limits. Do not use a logrotate rule on journal files.
Rotation controls disk use; it does not guarantee that a stream remains live. Keep logging changes separate from stream and service changes, and confirm the channel’s live status through the monitoring you already use.
