Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallIf OBS says it is encoding but your YouTube live stream has stopped updating, an active encoder indicator does not prove that fresh video is reaching YouTube. First compare the OBS preview and a local recording with OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators and YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health. That split helps identify whether to investigate production (the source, rendering, or encoding) or delivery (the connection, ingest, or platform health).
Locate where the freeze begins
- Check the OBS preview. Is it updating smoothly, frozen, or choppy? YouTube recommends checking the stream directly in the encoder.
- Check a local recording, if available. If it has the same freeze as the YouTube playback, the problem may be in the source, scene rendering, or encoding. This is a diagnostic inference, not a guaranteed diagnosis.
- Compare with YouTube playback. If the preview and recording look healthy but YouTube is frozen, focus next on outbound delivery and ingest.
- Ask who is affected. One viewer reporting a freeze may have a local playback or connection issue. Reports from several viewers on one shared network point toward that network; reports from viewers on separate networks make an encoder-side problem more plausible.
YouTube recommends checking the local archive and asking whether reports come from one viewer, viewers on a shared connection, or viewers on separate connections. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
Check OBS and YouTube delivery signals
OBS dropped frames and connection status
Check OBS’s dropped-frame counter and connection status. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection to the remote ingest server is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. Dropped frames do not explain every visual freeze, so compare them with the preview, recording, and YouTube’s status rather than treating them as a complete diagnosis. OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting page, published September 30, 2024, says: “If you experience dropped frames or intermittent disconnections while streaming, there is a network issue between your computer and the remote stream ingest server.”
YouTube Live Control Room stream health
Open the event in YouTube Live Control Room and review stream health and any reported errors. YouTube says: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” The messages can help distinguish an ingest or configuration issue from a problem that is visible only to particular viewers. See YouTube’s troubleshooting instructions and its stream-health guidance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the OBS preview or recording is also frozen
Work on the production path before changing network settings. OBS’s encoding-performance guidance, published June 12, 2021, recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load, updating OBS, and reducing the work your scenes and applications require. Try changes one at a time so you can tell which one helps.
- Update OBS, then check whether the encoder reports errors.
- Check CPU load. Close only applications you know are using substantial GPU resources.
- If streaming a game, cap its frame rate or reduce graphics settings to leave more capacity for OBS.
- Simplify scenes and reduce filters or other processing that may burden rendering.
- If the problem continues, reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again.
- On Windows, OBS lists running as administrator as a quick fix to try for GPU overload. This is a performance-specific suggestion, not a general network remedy.
Use OBS’s encoding-performance troubleshooting guide for its full guidance. If the local recording is healthy while YouTube playback is not, these production changes are less directly indicated; investigate delivery instead.

If local output is healthy but YouTube is not updating
Focus on the route from OBS to YouTube’s ingest server. Change one factor at a time, then check OBS’s connection indicators and YouTube stream health again.
Test the network path
- If OBS exposes an ingest-server choice, try a different server and see whether the connection stabilizes.
- If you are on Wi-Fi, test with wired Ethernet if practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming; a cable is a reasonable diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
- Restart the modem and router for general connectivity trouble. Check the cable, network card, switch, or extender if the symptoms suggest a hardware fault.
- Check whether a VPN, firewall or antivirus, bundled network software, or network driver is interfering with the connection.
- If connection problems persist, ask your ISP for help. YouTube specifically advises contacting the ISP when encoder output is healthy but outbound connectivity tests poorly.
OBS’s connection troubleshooting guide covers these checks. It also documents Windows-only network optimization and TCP pacing controls. Their availability and relevance depend on platform and version; leave Bind to IP set to Default, as OBS advises. Do not treat these controls as universal fixes.

Choose a bitrate that fits the stream
A bitrate that exceeds stable upload capacity can contribute to delivery trouble. OBS offers 75% of total upload speed as a diagnostic starting point—not a guarantee that the connection will be stable or that YouTube will accept every configuration. Match the bitrate to your resolution, frame rate, codec, and YouTube’s current recommendations; do not lower it at random without checking those settings.
The following H.264 values are YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates in its encoder settings table, accessed October 3, 2026. They are platform recommendations for the listed settings, not measured upload-speed requirements or guarantees. The same table gives different values for AV1 and H.265, so select the row for your actual codec rather than applying the H.264 figures to another format.

| Video setting | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These values can change. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate recommendations for your codec and stream configuration before changing bitrate. YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of 2 seconds for RTMP/RTMPS and says not to exceed 4 seconds; verify this in the encoder’s output settings.

- Before the next event, test the stream with the intended resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate.
- During the test, compare the OBS preview and local recording with OBS’s connection and dropped-frame indicators.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages and confirm that playback is updating.
- If the test fails, change one relevant setting or network condition, then repeat the test before making another change.
YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. The exact cause of a freeze cannot be inferred from the encoder’s active status alone; use the local output, OBS indicators, YouTube messages, and viewer reports together.
