To review Facebook privacy, open your profile picture or menu, choose Settings & privacy → Settings, then work through Audience and visibility. Use Privacy Checkup for a guided review and Activity Log for older posts, tags, comments and other activity. Facebook does not have one universal “make private” switch: post audiences, profile details, discovery, tagging, blocking and device location are separate controls.
The labels and available choices can differ by app, device, profile type and region. The steps below reflect Meta Help Center guidance available on October 13, 2026.
What Facebook privacy settings actually control
Facebook privacy is a collection of permissions rather than a single status. A change that affects future posts will not necessarily change an old photo, a tag added by someone else or information displayed on another person’s profile. Start by identifying the thing you want to protect:
| What you want to control | Primary place to change it | What the setting governs |
|---|---|---|
| New posts and stories | Audience selector on the post, plus Posts and Stories settings | Who can view each item you publish |
| Old posts, comments and interactions | Activity Log and individual post controls | Reviewing, hiding, deleting or changing available audiences for past activity |
| Profile details | Audience and visibility → Profile details | Who can see information such as contact or personal details shown on your profile |
| Who can find or contact you | Audience and visibility → How people find and contact you | Suggestions based on your email address or phone number and links from external search engines |
| Tags and posts that mention you | Audience and visibility → Profile and tagging | Whether tags appear on your profile, who can see tagged posts and who can add items for review |
| Friends list | Audience and visibility → Friends list | Who can see the Friends section on your profile |
| Blocking | Audience and visibility → Blocking | Many ways a selected profile can interact with or view you |
| Facebook’s access to your device location | Your phone or tablet’s operating-system settings | Whether the Facebook app can use location services |
| Sign-in protection | Security and login settings | Two-factor authentication, login alerts and security-key sign-in; these do not set post audiences |
This separation explains why changing one option can leave apparently private information visible elsewhere. Review the matching control instead of relying on a general “private profile” assumption.

Open the main privacy controls
On the Facebook website
- Open Facebook and select your profile picture or the account menu at the top right.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then select Settings.
- In the settings page, find Audience and visibility.
- Open the specific category you need: profile details; how people find and contact you; posts; stories; pages; reels; followers and public content; profile and tagging; or blocking.
- Read the audience description before saving. A choice may affect future activity only, while an item-specific menu or Activity Log is needed for existing activity.
In the Facebook mobile app
Open the menu from your profile picture, then follow Settings & privacy → Settings → Audience and visibility. Menu placement can vary between Android and iOS versions, and some profiles expose a different set of controls. If a category is not shown, use the settings search field or open the relevant post, profile field or tagged item directly.
Check the result from another perspective
After changing a setting, view your profile as someone who is not your Facebook friend when the platform offers that preview. Also inspect an individual post’s audience icon. A profile-level choice can coexist with a post-specific audience, so the post’s own selector is the practical confirmation.
Use Privacy Checkup for a guided review
Privacy Checkup walks through key sharing choices in one guided flow. It is useful when you are unsure which category needs attention or when you want a periodic review rather than troubleshooting one post.
- Open the Facebook menu from your profile picture.
- Choose Settings & privacy, then look for Privacy Checkup. The exact entry point can move as Facebook changes its menus.
- Complete each section shown, paying attention to the audience displayed for posts, profile information and ways people can find you.
- Change a choice, continue to the next screen and confirm the final summary before leaving.
Privacy Checkup is a guided overview, not a replacement for Activity Log. It may not show every historical comment, tag, reaction or older post, so use the log when you need an inventory of past activity.
Use Activity Log to inspect older activity
Activity Log is the control center for reviewing what you have already shared or done. Meta says its default view starts with the current year and the most recent activity, so widen the date range when investigating older material.
- Open your profile picture or menu.
- Go to Settings & privacy → Activity Log, or open Activity Log from your profile if that shortcut is offered.
- Filter by year, activity type or category. Useful categories include posts, photos and videos, comments, likes and reactions, tags, profile information and connections.
- Open an item to see its available action: change audience where offered, hide it from your profile, remove a tag, delete it, or move it to another available area.
- Review the item again after taking action. Some controls change how an item appears on your profile without removing it from Facebook, while deletion removes the item you control.
Do not assume a new default audience rewrites history. For a post you published, use its audience menu or Activity Log. For a post created by somebody else, you generally cannot replace that person’s audience; you can manage your tag, remove the item from your profile where available or ask the original poster to change it.
Change who can see new Facebook posts
Set the audience while publishing
When you create a post, open the audience selector next to your name before selecting Post. Choose the audience offered by Facebook, such as a public audience, friends or a more limited custom choice. The selected audience applies to that post and can differ from your general preference.

- Start a new post.
- Select the current audience label or icon beside your name.
- Choose the narrowest audience that fits the post.
- Publish, then check the audience icon on the finished post.
Stories, reels, pages and followers/public-content controls have their own entries under Audience and visibility. A choice for ordinary posts should not be treated as a setting for every format.

Change an audience after publishing
Open the post’s options menu and choose the audience control when Facebook provides it. If the post does not offer the change you need, use Activity Log to inspect the item and apply the available action. This is more reliable than changing a default and assuming every old post changed with it.
Review profile details, photos and your Friends section
Profile details
Under Audience and visibility, open Profile details. Work through each field and choose the smallest audience appropriate for that individual detail. Contact information, work or education entries and other fields can have separate audience choices, so changing one field does not automatically change the others.
Current profile picture and cover photo
Meta states that your current profile picture and current cover photo are public. Treat those two images as information anyone may be able to see. Older profile and cover images may have adjustable privacy, so review them in your photos or Activity Log if you need to limit their audience.
Friends list
Facebook says the Friends section is public by default. Open the Friends-list control and select a narrower audience if you do not want the full list displayed on your profile. This does not control what your friends reveal on their own profiles. Mutual friends may still be visible, and a person’s connections can expose a relationship even when your Friends section is limited.

Control what appears on your profile
Open Audience and visibility → Profile and tagging. Review the options for who can post on your profile, who can see what others post on your profile and whether you must review posts or tags before they appear. Turn on review choices when you want an opportunity to approve an item before it is displayed on your profile.
Understand the audience for a tagged post
A tagged post can be visible to an audience chosen by the original poster and to people included by your own tagging settings. Meta says the option that can add your friends to the audience defaults to Friends. Your setting does not override the original poster’s audience choice. If someone publishes a public post and tags you, changing your preference cannot convert that public post into a friends-only post for everyone.

Remove a tag or hide an item
For an existing tag, open the post or use Activity Log, then choose the available tag-removal or profile-hiding action. Removing your tag changes the connection to your profile; it does not necessarily delete the original post, which remains under the original poster’s control and audience.
Limit how people find and contact you
Email and phone-number suggestions
In How people find and contact you, review the controls governing profile suggestions based on your email address or phone number. Narrowing these settings reduces one discovery route, but it does not make your profile invisible through every route. People may still find you through your name, mutual connections, groups, events or content you share.
External search engines
Facebook includes an option controlling links to your profile from external search engines. Turning it off does not immediately erase cached or already indexed results. Search engines must recrawl and update their records, and copies or references elsewhere can remain visible while that happens.
Public activity and followers
Review Followers and public content separately from ordinary post audiences. Public comments, followers and other public interactions can have different visibility rules. If your goal is to reduce exposure, inspect a sample of public posts and comments in Activity Log instead of changing only a future-post default.
Use blocking with realistic expectations
Open Audience and visibility → Blocking to add or manage blocked profiles. Blocking limits many interactions, but it is not a guarantee that every trace of contact or every shared item disappears.
Meta identifies situations in which a blocked person may still encounter information or interactions, including:
Recommended Free Tools
- Content posted by mutual friends.
- Shared groups or events.
- Third-party apps or games.
- Marketplace reviews.
- Other profiles the person creates.
Use blocking for the interactions it is designed to limit, then separately review group memberships, shared events, public posts and tags if you need to reduce incidental visibility.

Change Facebook location access through your device
For the Facebook app, location access is controlled in your phone or tablet’s operating-system settings rather than by a normal Facebook audience selector.
Android
Open the device’s app-permission settings, select Facebook and open Location. Android versions offer different choices, such as allowing access only while the app is in use, asking each time or denying access. The exact labels depend on the Android release and device manufacturer.
iPhone or iPad
Open Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services, select Facebook and choose the available permission. Apple’s labels and options can change with iOS or iPadOS versions.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep login security separate from privacy visibility
Two-factor authentication, login alerts and security keys protect access to your account. They help prevent an unauthorized sign-in, but they do not change who can see your posts, profile details or tags.
To review these protections, open Facebook’s security and login settings, enable two-factor authentication and configure login alerts where available. Meta also lists a hardware security key as a login option. A security key is optional and should be viewed as an account-access safeguard, not as a privacy-audience setting.

- Open Privacy Checkup. Use the guided flow to catch common sharing choices.
- Search Activity Log. Review the current year first, then older years and categories for posts, photos, comments, reactions and tags.
- Inspect public-facing items. Remember that the current profile picture and cover photo are public; review older images separately.

Troubleshoot common privacy surprises
“I changed my privacy setting, but an old post is still visible.”
Open the post itself or find it in Activity Log. A new default may apply only to future posts. Apply the item-level audience control or available hide/delete action.
“I removed a tag, but the photo is still online.”
Removing a tag changes your association with the item. It does not necessarily remove the original poster’s photo or change that person’s audience. Ask the poster to edit or remove it if you need the image itself taken down.
“I hid my Friends section, but people still see mutual friends.”
Limiting the Friends section affects your profile display, not what friends reveal on their profiles. Mutual-friend connections can remain visible.
“My profile still appears in a search result.”
Disabling Facebook’s external-search link option does not instantly clear cached or indexed pages. Allow time for the search engine to update, and review the specific Facebook content that is still public.
“Blocking did not eliminate every encounter.”
Check mutual groups, events, third-party apps or games, Marketplace reviews and other profiles. Blocking limits many interactions but does not cover every shared context.
“I cannot find the exact menu shown in a guide.”
Facebook changes navigation and may show different controls by app, device, profile type and region. Start from your profile picture or menu, open Settings & privacy → Settings, search for the category name and inspect the individual post or profile field when the global menu is different.
What a “private Facebook profile” can and cannot mean
You can substantially reduce exposure by narrowing post audiences, limiting profile details, restricting discovery suggestions, reviewing tags, limiting the Friends section and managing historical activity. You cannot make every signal invisible: the current profile picture and cover photo are public, other people control the audiences of their own posts, mutual-friend visibility can remain and search engines may retain older indexes temporarily. Privacy is therefore an ongoing set of choices, not a permanent account mode.
Recheck the settings after major app updates, when you change your audience habits or when you join new groups and events. For a one-time cleanup, combine Privacy Checkup with a dated Activity Log review; for an ongoing routine, inspect each post’s audience before publishing.
