Yes—you can reuse a YouTube stream key. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create a custom stream key, then save it in your encoder. You can also reuse a previous stream’s settings when setting up another broadcast. Neither feature makes one live event permanent: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but its guidance does not specify what happens to archives for longer streams.
How to reuse a YouTube stream key
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Create a custom key. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and select the Stream tab. Under Select stream key, create a new custom key, configure the available settings, and save it. YouTube’s instructions explicitly say, “To reuse the same stream key, create a custom stream key.” See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Copy the connection details to your encoder. Put the stream URL in the encoder’s server or URL field and the key in its stream-key field. Use the matching fields; the key is the credential used with the stream address to send your feed.
- Reuse it for a later broadcast. Keep the custom key in the encoder for the next stream, or use YouTube’s Reuse settings option when creating a stream. Reusing settings can carry forward metadata, settings, and the key; check the loaded details before you start. See YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not share it or expose it publicly. If someone obtains it, reset it in the Live Control Room and replace the saved key in your encoder. YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset a key.
- Test before relying on the setup. Start a test broadcast, check the preview and stream health in Live Control Room, and confirm that the encoder is sending the intended feed. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health; a reusable key is not an uptime guarantee. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
What reusing a key does—and does not—do
A custom stream key is a reusable encoder credential. Reusing it avoids creating and transferring a new key for each broadcast. Reusing settings can also save setup work by carrying over prior metadata and configuration.
These conveniences do not make a single watch-page event a permanent live stream, guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 channel, or establish how YouTube handles an archive longer than its stated threshold. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited instructions do not define the archive outcome for a stream that runs 12 hours or longer. For round-the-clock programming, plan how you will handle event continuity and any recordings you need rather than assuming one event will run or archive indefinitely. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Limits and operating choices for a 24/7 channel
Active-stream limits
YouTube’s current getting-started help page states a limit of 10 active streams per channel and three active streams per stream key. These are platform limits, not a recommended channel layout, and can change. Check the current YouTube help page before building an operations plan around them.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Software or hardware encoder
YouTube supports software encoders. It also describes professional-grade hardware encoders as an option for events that need higher production value. You do not need dedicated hardware just to reuse a key. Hardware is a production choice, not a guarantee of continuous-duty reliability; YouTube’s guidance does not certify specific models for nonstop operation.
Connection and encoding settings
For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends constant bitrate encoding and a keyframe interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a stream quality your connection can sustain reliably, then test it and monitor stream health instead of assuming the settings alone ensure uptime. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

Troubleshooting a reused key
- YouTube will not let the channel go live: confirm verification and check whether the channel has had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days.
- The encoder cannot connect: verify that the stream URL and key are in their respective fields, that the key has not been reset, and that the encoder is using the intended RTMP/RTMPS configuration.
- The preview is missing or stream health is poor: check the encoder output and network connection, use a quality the connection can sustain, and verify constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval (never more than four seconds).
- A copied setup has the wrong title or metadata: review the details loaded through Reuse settings before starting; that option can carry forward metadata as well as the key and other settings.
- The key may have been exposed: have a channel owner or manager reset it in Live Control Room, then update the encoder with the replacement.
- You need a complete recording of a continuous event: do not assume YouTube’s automatic archive covers streams lasting 12 hours or more. Its documented automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours; plan a separate recording workflow if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps pre-recorded programming on air without leaving a home computer running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month.
