For a 4K/2160p, 60 fps YouTube Live stream, start with 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC or AV1. Set rate control to CBR and the keyframe interval to two seconds (never more than four). These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, not a promise that your internet connection or encoder can sustain the stream; test your actual setup before going live.
Recommended 4K60 encoder settings
YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these settings for encoder-based live streams. Choose the bitrate for the codec you are sending; do not apply one codec’s figure to another.
| Setting | Recommended value for 4K60 |
|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 4K/2160p at 60 fps |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.264: 50 Mbps recommended, 14 Mbps minimum listed |
| Video codec and bitrate | H.265/HEVC: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum listed |
| Video codec and bitrate | AV1: 35 Mbps recommended, 10 Mbps minimum listed |
| Rate control | CBR |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds recommended; do not exceed 4 seconds |
| Protocol | RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS |
| Pixel aspect ratio and scan | Square pixels; progressive scan |
| Frame structure | 2 B-frames and 1 reference frame |
| Entropy coding | CABAC |
| SDR color | Rec. 709, 8-bit |
| HDR color | H.265/HEVC, 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR in this guidance |
| Audio codec | AAC or MP3; 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC |
| Stereo audio | 44.1 kHz, 128 kbps |
| 5.1 audio | 48 kHz, 384 kbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations and listed minimums, not results of a controlled comparison between encoders or codecs. Source: YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Choosing H.264, HEVC, or AV1
For SDR
Any of the three codecs appears in YouTube’s listed options. H.264 has a higher recommended 4K60 ingest bitrate than HEVC or AV1: 50 Mbps versus 35 Mbps. That difference alone does not establish which will look better in your production. Use a codec your encoder supports reliably, and match the bitrate to YouTube’s recommendation for it.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For HDR
YouTube’s guidance specifies H.265/HEVC at 10-bit for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm your encoder and production chain are configured for HDR before choosing this path; the SDR recommendation is Rec. 709, 8-bit.
AV1 at 4K and above
For AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above, YouTube lists a minimum of two tile columns. Check that your encoder can set this parameter if you plan to send AV1.

Set up the encoder and stream key
- Choose the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube normally detects the incoming resolution and frame rate automatically. If you need to select them manually, create a custom stream key and enable manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Set the encoder output. In your encoder, select 3840 × 2160 at 60 fps, the codec you intend to send, its corresponding bitrate from the table, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. Apply the listed scan, frame-structure, color, and audio settings that your encoder exposes.
- Use RTMPS where available. YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter the key in the encoder’s streaming destination settings and do not share or publish it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s live settings before the next broadcast.
- Run a representative rehearsal. Check upload bitrate and test with movement and audio similar to the planned program. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting the live stream.
- Start the encoder and check stream health. Review messages in the encoder and Live Control Room, and confirm the incoming resolution, frame rate, and audio before relying on the stream.
Check bandwidth, latency, and stream health
The recommended video bitrate is the encoder’s ingest target, not a guarantee of stable delivery. Your upload connection needs enough sustained capacity for the video and audio plus room for normal variation. Check upload performance before the event and do not assume that a brief speed test proves the connection will remain steady throughout a long broadcast.
During the stream, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and encoder messages. If they report instability, lower the output quality or bitrate to a level your connection can sustain, then test again. A stream that repeatedly drops frames or disconnects is not improved by selecting 4K simply because the encoder offers it.

At 4K/2160p, YouTube does not offer the option to improve for low latency. These streams are optimized for quality and use normal latency.
Troubleshooting common 4K60 problems
- Unstable stream or dropped frames: The connection may not be sustaining the selected bitrate. Check upload capacity, reduce bitrate or resolution to a reliable level, and rehearse again.
- YouTube reports incorrect or unexpected resolution or frame rate: Verify the encoder output settings. If automatic detection is unsuitable, use a custom stream key and manual settings under Stream Resolution.
- Keyframe or encoding warning: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; make sure the interval does not exceed four seconds.
- HDR is unavailable or does not work as expected: YouTube’s cited guidance calls for H.265/HEVC at 10-bit for HDR; AV1 is not supported for HDR there. Confirm the encoder supports the required output.
- AV1 at 4K or higher fails a setting check: Confirm the encoder uses at least two tile columns for AV1 at 3840 × 2160 and above.
- Audio is missing or the surround format is rejected: Check that the output uses AAC or MP3; for 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC and the listed 48 kHz, 384 kbps setting.
